PADNUG July Meeting
Intel Ronler Acres RA1 Auditorium

WHEN: Tuesday 07/06/2010 6:00 p.m. Pizza (by Ascentium) 6:30 p.m. Presentation ~8:30 p.m. After Words at Cornelius Pass Roadhouse

WHO:
Chris Goldfarb Chris Goldfarb is a dev for the Intel Information Technology group, and has been writing software for 14 years. .NET has been Chris' main focus since the pre-beta bits were released, and has both developed applications and trained others on the framework. Chris has presented software engineering topics at technical conferences such as the Microsoft Professional Developer's Conference, Intel Developers Group and the Portland Area .NET User Group, which he founded.

He has held positions as board member of the Intel e-Business Group .NET Taskforce and the Technical Infrastructure committee of the International .NET Association (INETA). Chris is Microsoft Certified in .NET and has been Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) in Visual C# for 4 years.

Prior to joining Intel in January 2001, he engineered mission-critical applications for the United States Air Force, United States Strategic Command. Primarily using Java, C++, and Ada, these applications included early-warning, ballistic missile flight path, and nuclear readiness assessment systems.

TOPIC:
MEF?!? Another 3-char acronym out of Microsoft? What is it and why should you care? How does it help deliver extensible applications? How is it different than traditional IoC containers, and what are some scenarios where you would use one over the other, or even both at once? How do you use MEF, and what are some potentials gotchas and considerations for implementation?

In this session learn all this and more. In fact, since nothing beats writing code to learn, bring a laptop with VS2010 RTM installed and help me build a composite application in real-time!

WHO: Scott Hanselman Scott Hanselman works out of his home office for Microsoft as a Principal Program Manager, aiming to spread good information about developing software, usually on the Microsoft stack. Before this he was the Chief Architect at Corillian Corporation, now a part of Checkfree, for 6 years. He was also involved in a few Microsoft things for many years like the MVP and RD programs and will speak about computers (and other passions) whenever someone will listen.

TOPIC: Information Overload and Managing the Flow: Effectiveness and Efficiency As developers, we are asked to absorb even more information than ever before. More APIs, more documentation, more patterns, more layers of abstraction. Now Twitter and Facebook compete with Email and Texts for our attention, keeping us up-to-date on our friends dietary details and movie attendance second-by-second. TOPIC: Workflow 4 Many real world business processes lend themselves well to being modeled as a formal work flow, and using a work flow framework can make the task of modeling much easier. Windows Workflow 4 provides a design surface, programming model, and toolset that make it easy for developers to model work flows, while taking advantage of a rich platform and set of services. WF 4 is much simpler to use and understand than the previous offerings, and is much more tightly integrated with WCF.

We'll look at what WF is good for, what it's best at, and how the WCF integration makes it easy to develop "durable services" and "long running" workflows.

CQRS and Windows Azure: A scalable architecture for the Cloud

CQRS. A confusing jumble of letters? Well, yes. CQRS stands for "Command Query Responsibility Segregation", and is an architectural pattern which is rapidly gaining popularity. It offers clear guidance on how to build highly scalable systems that embrace asynchronous operations.

In this talk we'll look at what CQRS is, how it lives up to the promises, and what kinds of systems would benefit from this approach. And then we’ll take the pattern and see what it takes to implement on top of Windows Azure.

Rather it gives us the range of development options that match the variety of our business models and needs. During this session I’ll be providing background on PhoneGap and other HTML5 mobile frameworks. We’ll talk about why and when it makes sense to choose these over a native approach. Please join us Tuesday night for the PADNUG May meet-up!

This month, Kathleen Dollard will be presenting on MVC extensibility with MEF.

WHERE: Intel Hawthorne Farms 3 (HF3) 5200 NE Elam Young Pkwy Hillsboro, OR 97124 Map: http://binged.it/IntelHF3Map

WHEN: Tuesday 5/8/2012 6:00 p.m. Pizza 6:30 p.m. Presentation ~8:30 p.m. After Words at On the Border Mexican Grill

WHO: Kathleen Dollard is Technical Evangelist for Digital Folio. She has been a Microsoft MVP since 1998 and has given hundreds of speeches around the world. She has worked extensively with compositional architectures in relation to specific development platforms. Her experience includes HTML5/Javascript, Silverlight, and WPF in both C# and Visual Basic. She’s interested in making core .NET technologies available to all coders to enable them to write better software faster. Her newest adventures include Windows Azure and SQL Azure. Kathleen is also a long-time advocate of generative techniques and is the author of Code Generation in Microsoft .NET (from Apress). She has published numerous articles on a range of .NET technologies. Kathleen is active in the Northern Colorado .NET SIG, the Denver Visual Studio User Group, and the Northern Colorado Architect's Group. Twitter: @kathleendollard | Website: http://msmvps.com/blogs/kathleen

TOPIC: MEF offers a great tool for composition and MVC offers an extensibility model designed for composition. Combining these two demonstrates a great composition design with nearly unlimited flexibility conditionally exposed as you need more features within MVC. You’ll learn how to use dependency injection (DI) to componentize tasks following single responsibility principle for more robust and testable applications. You’ll see how MVC uses custom model binders, value providers, validators, and filters. You’ll see these techniques used to pull almost all code out of the website project, giving you full flexibility in how you organize your website’s code. You’ll also see generic base classes that allow extensive reuse of controller logic and reuse of page elements. This challenging talk offers something for everyone – deeper insight into composed systems using DI, details about MVC internals, and some serious MEF examples.

COPIOUSLabs TechTalk: The architectural underpinnings of C# with .Net
COPIOUS

COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. We recently moved to a new office and now have a large space to host our TechTalks.

About TechTalks:

COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team.

About this talk:

Speaker: John Jessee

As new programming languages emerge, Microsoft's flagship programming language has been evolving to keep up. See how C# and the .NET Framework have incorporated new features such as functional programming, non-blocking code, language integrated queries, and more. This talk compares C# and the .NET Framework to the languages found in the book, Seven Languages in Seven Weeks, and in particular COPIOUS' most "native" tongue, Ruby.

All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover.

Who practices Agile philosophies, methods, principles or practices in the Northwest, and what's the impact? What is the difference between Lean, Scrum, XP, and other Agile approaches? What new technical challenges face Agile? What are the latest cutting edge developments in the Agile software development world? How do Agile frameworks and methods co-exist with project management, process control and other governance structures? How do we adapt Agile practices to our organizations without diluting them? Can Agile methods work in big, risky projects? How? When distributed teams use Agile approaches, what changes? If we adopt an Agile mindset, what might the transition look like in my organization?

Portland F# Meetup
Incomm Digital Solutions

Let's meet up and chat about F# in the web world.

Ryan Riley (@panesofglass) is a proud member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie class of ‘01, a Visual F# MVP, and Engineer for Tachyus, a start-up using F# to profoundly revolutionize the oil & gas industry. He runs the Community for F# virtual user group and serves on the management committee for the Open Web Interface for .NET (OWIN) specification.

F# on the Web

Most people think of F# as good at math or complex problem solving. It is actually a fantastic for a very wide array of tasks, including web programming, which helped the start-up Tachyus go from 0 to production in 12 weeks. In this talk, we'll compare and contrast a web application written in familiar C# patterns with various features provided by F#, including function composition, computation expressions (async), type providers, and active patterns. We'll also cover differences in application design patterns.

Since Ryan is remote, we're going to host this in Google Hangouts, so even if you're not able to physically make it to the hangout, come join us! It is going to be a great time. Looking forward to see everybody there!

Elasticsearch Portlandia Meetup - Elasticsearch & .NET
Mozilla Portland Office

Martijn Laarman and Greg Marzouka, Elastic.co's two lead .NET developers will be giving a talk titled "Elasticsearch for .NET Developers". Food and drink will be provided, and thanks to Mozilla for hosting! Talk will begin at 6:30 PM.

Abstract: Elasticsearch for .NET Developers: A whirlwind dive into the strongly-typed client for .NET Elasticsearch offers a simple REST interface that exposes JSON, so a .NET developer might be tempted to simply use HttpClient and Json.NET to talk with Elasticsearch.

In this talk we'll showcase, through the usage of LINQPad, some of the features that outline how NEST plays to C# strengths and helps you write terser code, all just one line of code away: new ElasticClient(). A few of the topics that we'll cover:

  • Strongly-typed requests and responses - Inference- Query DSL- Aggregations- Covariant result sets- Connection pooling and failover

Attendees will leave this talk knowing how to fully tame Elasticsearch from .NET

Please RSVP for the event on meetup.com so we can order sufficient food and drinks for all attendees: http://www.meetup.com/The-Portlandia-ElasticSearch-Meetup-Group/events/221442669/

Speaker bios:

Martijn Laarman, Software Engineer, Elastic Co.

A .NET developer for nearly a decade and tinkering with the web since his teens, Martijn loves keyboard-driven creativity.

Greg Marzouka, Software Engineer, Elastic Co.

Greg is a .NET developer focused on maintaining the .NET clients, NEST, and Elasticsearch.Net. Previously, he worked at an advertising agency in New York, building out their Elasticsearch cluster. He’s a huge open source enthusiast and loves working with programming languages and frameworks of all kinds.

Portland F# Meetup Group - Organizational Meeting
DAT

I need to double-check with the location's availability still, but I'm pretty sure they'll be able to accommodate us.  I'll also have an update with instructions on how to enter the building after hours.

At this meetup, we need to identify and empower a new organizational team.

I'm recommending that we have four active members with the privileges to schedule and conduct meetups.  This should distribute the burden of identifying topics, picking dates and times and securing locations in such a way that we capture productivity at the moment of inspiration and not obligation.  If that last bit didn't make sense, come to the meetup and I'll explain how that works.

PADNUG - Kirk Davis and Paul Fryer: Building .NET Serverless Applications with AWS!
Intel Hawthorn Farms 3 (HF3) Campus

A serverless approach to computing is one where services required to run a system are managed and automated. Developers don’t need to worry about running server instances and you pay only for the time code is actually executing, instead of servers hosted by the hour. Learn how to build .NET based serverless applications with Amazon Web Services (AWS). We’ll build an ASP.NET Core API and deploy it to AWS’s function as a service, Lambda and API Gateway. Then we'll deploy a single page application (SPA) with AngularJS using AWS’s storage service, S3 and content delivery network, CloudFront. This entire serverless application will be built, deployed and ready to serve at scale during the demo.

Inaugural Hardware Hackers Portland Meetup - Hacking appliances and prototyping connected things with Netduino and Xamarin.
PSU Business Accelerator

The hardware revolution is just beginning. Nest, Ring, Mellow; these are just the tip of the iceberg. Advances in hardware and software have opened a new world of connected possibilities that extends beyond just the consumer and into the industrial and commercial IoT world. And if you can develop apps, you can build hardware!

Howdy folks, Bryan Costanich here, and I'm super excited to announce the very first Hardware Hackers Portland meetup. Come and get inspired to build your own connected things as I walk through hacking household appliances into connected things that you can control with your phone using Netduino and Xamarin. Come learn how Netudino.Foundation (http://Netduino.Foundation) makes creating connected things in C# a piece of cake, with a massive library of peripheral drivers for sensors, LCDs, etc., and a handrolled API that makes building smart hardware a plug and play experience.

Much thanks to PSU Business Accelerator for graciously hosting us! You can find us in the Mt. Hood Room, and find directions here: https://www.pdx.edu/accelerator/directions.
