Dev Nation
Ace Hotel

In early 2009, several developers from Relevance and Viget Labs got together and starting talking about technical conferences. As we discussed our past experiences at regional, national, and international events, we began to realize something: large conferences are wonderful for a lot of things, but we wanted something that met a different set of goals. We came up with Developer Day, which was designed to:

  • Build lasting relationships among local peers
  • Bridge distinct technical communities

After a year of Developer Days, however, we decided a new look was in order, and thus was born DevNation. We've still got the same ideals, but we feel that the DevNation name better reflects that vision (and it's easier to Google!)

Relationships

The general pattern for a large conference runs something like this: you fly to a city, go to the event, have a great time, meet lots of great people, and fly home. More often than not, you don't see those people again until the next big conference, and that's a problem. We wanted our event to be different, so it's intentionally local. Speakers and attendees are overwhelmingly local to the conference, so when you meet someone doing something cool, you can connect with them a week later for lunch without a problem.

Technology-Agnostic

Sure, there are events that draw a wide range of developers (e.g., OSCON), but even then people tend to segregate; the Pythonists go to their sessions, the Rubyists to theirs, and the PHP devs to theirs. By having only one track, we give everyone the opportunity to see what's happening in other communities.

IPFS Portland OSCON Meetup: The Permanent, Distributed Web
CTRL-H

Join us at CtrlH for food, drinks, discussion and a talk by Juan Benet on IPFS during OSCON week!

What is IPFS?

IPFS is a distributed file system that seeks to connect all computing devices with the same system of files. In some ways, this is similar to the original aims of the Web, but brings in the latest ideas from P2P and cryptography to form a distributed, permanent web.

IPFS could become a new major subsystem of the internet. If built right, it could complement or replace HTTP. It could complement or replace even more. It sounds crazy. It is crazy! We also think it's the future of the web. Come see it in action, and meet the team of developers working on it.

Afterwards hang out, talk tech, hack, recharge your batteries, use our fast WiFi and get a tour of CtrlH, Portland’s newest and largest hackerspace.

See you there!

Awesome Mobile Web Tools and Frameworks — Mobile Portland
Cloudability

Interested in building apps using core web technology—HTML5, Javascript and CSS?

Then you don’t want to miss Mobile Portland this month as we take a look at three awesome tools and frameworks for mobile web development.

We’re pleased to welcome James Pearce, Brian LeRoux and Patrick Mueller to Portland. They’ve graciously agreed to take time out from their busy OSCON schedules to talk to us about:

  • World Premiere! Client-side data-bound mobile charting with Sencha Touch
  • Cloud-based app binaries using PhoneGap Build.
  • Weinre: a remote debugger for web pages on mobile device.

If you’re doing any mobile web development work, these are tools you need to know about. And given the number of apps that include embedded web views, it means nearly everyone is doing some sort of mobile web development.

Special OSCON Note

Mobile Portland is a free monthly meeting open to anyone. If you are in town for OSCON, please feel free to join us. All that we ask is that you RSVP so we know how many chairs we need.

You can take the MAX train for free from the convention center and then take a short walk (.4 mi) to the meeting location.

If you’re a Portlander who isn’t attending OSCON, you should! Not only is the largest open source conference, but there are mobile tracks with detailed presentations from Patrick Mueller and two of Brian LeRoux’s Nitobi colleagues.

About the Speakers

Brian LeRoux, Nitobi SPACELORD!1!!, PhoneGap Contributor, Mobile Web Enthusiast, Tolerant of JavaScript, Trucker Mouth

Brian LeRoux is the lead at Nitobi Software with the prestigious title SPACELORD!1!! He also has the dubious distinction of being the creator of wtfjs.com despite a twisted love for the language of the web. To make matters worse he actually has a non-breaking space tattoo.

Aside all these ridiculous distractions he is also responsible for leading the direction on the wildly popular PhoneGap software project that has the audacious goal to provide a web platform complete with device APIs for all smartphone operating systems.

James Pearce, Senior Director of Developer Relations, Sencha

James is a technologist, writer, developer & entrepreneur who has been working with the mobile web for over a decade. He is Senior Director of Developer Relations at Sencha. Previously he was the CTO at dotMobi and has a background in mobile startups, telecoms infrastructure and management consultancy.

He speaks extensively on the topic of mobile web development, and has written books for both Wiley and Wrox.James led the development of mobiForge, DeviceAtlas and ready.mobi, and is the creator of tinySrc, the WordPress Mobile Pack, and WhitherApps. He has declared every year since 1997 to be "The Year of the Mobile Web" - and feels like he might finally be right.

Patrick Mueller, WebKit contributor, IBM

Patrick Mueller is a software developer at IBM in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. He’s been working on web software and mobile software for a long time. Don’t ask how long, unless you want to hear about how great it was to use Smalltalk for web and mobile software development.

Portland Perl Mongers - Highly Functional Programming
Free Geek

Highly Functional Programming

Speaker: Eric Wilhelm

Functional programming is very pure and elegant when nothing can change, and the computer can reason about your code for you -- in theory. Reality is messier, but Perl and other high-level languages support pure functions as a subset of the procedural and OO paradigms, so why don't we use them more? Functional techniques are good problem solving tools, useful for event-driven programs, and can be mixed into traditional OO and procedural codebases for better code reuse and testability.

In this talk, we'll look at some benefits of purely functional programming from a pragmatic and procedural viewpoint. There will be absolutely no mention of monads because we will just ride our lambdas through the mud and get it done. We'll see how good programming practices tend to suggest stateless and functional approaches. We'll examine techniques for refactoring which separate functions from state changes and allow you to better test and reason about your code. Finally, we'll look at language interpreters and discuss how technology might be able to help get even more benefits out of highly functional programming approaches.

This is a preview of an upcoming OSCON talk.

As always, meet us at the Lucky Lab for some beer and good company following the meeting.

Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics: Speaking in Public is Easy
Free Geek

Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics Meeting Announcement

Who: Brian Rohan and Michael Dexter

What: Speaking in Public is Easy

Where: Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland (Left Entrance)

When: Tuesday, January 21st, 2014 at 7pm

Why: The pursuit of technology freedom

You read that right: Speaking in public is easy and there is nothing stopping you from giving the next informative and compelling PLUG talk.

  • You are guaranteed to have a unique topic, experience and perspective
  • Audiences are far kinder than you expect (only pros get boo'd!)
  • Visuals are always optional
  • No one was born a public speaker
  • There are great resources out there to help you
  • Most things that go wrong have nothing to do with you (Tsunamis!)
  • Live demos are... risky, but cool
  • The OSCON and LFNW CFP's close shortly (hint hint)

Brian and Michael will give you a pragmatic tour of exactly what is involved in open source conference speaking and explain precisely how nothing is stopping you from getting involved thanks to local organizations like the Portland Linux/Unix Group.

Brian says:

In 2007 I made the switch from being a machinist to a real estate agent, shortly thereafter I was invited to investigate a Toastmasters club, in order to become a better communicator. Through 5 years and over 40 speeches in Toastmasters I reached the highest level of Distinguished Toastmaster. Simply stepping out of my comfort zone has given me the opportunity introduce dignitaries, and MC fund-raising events for worthwhile causes (notably a record breaking Clark County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner auction). Currently I am a recognized top 2% leader in AdvoCare International, helping others achieve their physical and financial goals.

I enjoy using Linux on a personal level for the freedom that it represents.

"You never get rid of public speaking butterflies, you just get them to fly in formation: ~Marv Serhan

Michael says:

Never in a 1,000 years will I speak in public yet I find myself doing it several times a month in Portland and at conferences around the world. I guarantee I'm no Brian Rohan but I fill rooms and get applause. The secret is finding the right room and just doing it. I will talk about the absolute worst that can happen (rarely what you think it would be), the open source conference community and how to get from submitting a proposal to stepping down from the stage.

Many will head to the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne after the meeting.

Portland Perl Mongers – Programming in the Future + Intro to Dist::Zilla
Free Geek

speakers: Eric Wilhelm + Jonathan "Duke" Leto

(Rumored cameo / lightning talk by Florian "rafl" Ragwitz.)

Programming in the Future - a preview of the upcoming OSCON presentation covering the last and next 25 years of programming technology using Perl as our time machine. We'll look at the evolution of tools, syntax, modules, and standard practices, the gooey innards, and some "hot new things" which are still being discovered again.

Introduction to Dist::Zilla for Newbies - eliminates your excuses for not learning more about Dist::Zilla and using it on a regular basis. By the end of this talk, you will know how and why to use dzil as your favorite Perl package developer tool, and you might even need to publish more code on the CPAN just to have an excuse to use it more.

As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub.
