PDXRust Meetup
Portland State University Fourth Avenue Building (FAB) Room FAB 86-01

Meet up with fellow Portland-area Rust programmers, give a lightning talk on your own project, find something interesting to collaborate on, or just enjoy talking shop with your fellow Rustaceans!

This is our first meeting since the pandemic! (Remember the pandemic?) We don't have any big topics planned to present, so this will just be a hack night. Brainstorming talk ideas for future meetups is definitely on topic.

Kindly hosted by Portland State University, we'll be meeting in Computer Science Conference Room FAB 086-01. Calagator has an entry for this venue: https://calagator.org/venues/202394217

(I'm a bit unclear on the security details; we may have someone at the door to let people in, in which case arriving late might be difficult, since we'd of course like that person to come down and join the group eventually. When I have more details I'll update this. -JimB)

The Journey from ER Modeler to Data Scientist + The Basics of Text Analytics
200 SW Market Street

We will be talking about what data science is and isn’t, with particular focus on the skills that a data scientist is expected to bring to bear on a problem. We will discuss the educational and skill expectations of a data scientist and how those relate to the skills we’ve developed as ER Modelers.

Going by job descriptions, data science can easily read like “jack of all trades, and master of them all too”. How do we break that down into something more reasonably achievable?

  • What is data science and what is a data scientist? What do they do?
  • Do ER Modelers make good Data Scientists?
  • Are the skill sets complementary?

And then we’ll look at some of the basics of text analytics, or extracting information from unstructured text. This won’t be nearly enough detail to make anybody a practitioner, but we will see several of the basic techniques at work and develop a functional mental model of some of the techniques. By the time we’re done, you’ll have been exposed to concepts like:

  • Term-Document Matrix (TDM)
  • Tokenizing
  • Stopword removal (Stopping)
  • Stemming
  • And as a bonus – we’ll see some Python code for extracting noun phrases

Bring your questions around these topics and let’s get into them.

Our Speaker

Asoka Diggs is a Data Scientist with Intel Corp. in Hillsboro, OR. He has about 15 years of experience in a variety of data management disciplines, including database administration, ER modeling, ETL development, and data architecture. He has recently transitioned to analysis of data by completing the MS Predictive Analytics degree from Northwestern University. It turns out that there IS something even more fun than ER modeling, and he now spends most of his work time practicing his analytic modeling skills, and teaching others how to participate and contribute to predictive analytic projects.

AgilePDX Westside Cafe: Integrating Dev & QA
2885 SW Cedar Hills Blvd., Beaverton, or, 97005

You're a QA professional and you've been trying for months to get involved at the start of a story, but developers push you away. They see you as the traffic cop waiting to catch them in an error. You're a developer and the QA folks always find something simple right before the end of the sprint. Why didn't they tell you they were going to test that?

Join us at AgilePDX westside to discuss how to involve QA earlier in the process. How do you convince the team that QA is more than testing and ads value from the very start. How do you convince QA to step into a larger role? That they can abandon the formality they were trained in and jump right in.

How Much Data Do We Need
Synaptiq office

If there is anything that is universally true in machine learning, it is that more data is always better. That’s why data scientists always respond to the “How much data do you need?” question with “How much data can you get?”

But sometimes you don’t have much data, because: a) It’s genuinely hard to get; or b) You haven’t been gathering it for very long and it takes time. This is a much more common circumstance than you might think. And you are not alone if you're experiencing this issue. Luckily, and not surprisingly, the machine learning community has come up with numerous approaches for dealing with it. Come sit in on an exclusive conversation with Dr. Tim Oates, professor and practitioner, who will share what appeals to intuition as to why the methods work and provide concrete examples of their application to simple problems.

We will discuss transfer learning, open source datasets and synthetic data, few shot learning, active learning, and semi-supervised learning. By the end of the evening, you should understand what all of these methods are, when they are applicable, and what kinds of results you can expect from using them.

Dr. Tim Oates is Chief Data Scientist at Synaptiq and an Oros Family Professor of Computer Science and Technology in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2001 with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and spent a year as a postdoc in the MIT AI Lab. He is an author or co-author of more than 150 peer reviewed papers in AI, ML, and data mining. Dr. Oates served as Chief Scientist for a big data startup in the contact management space, and has consulted in a wide variety of industries, including healthcare, construction, amusement parks, publishing, and social media.

The cost for this workshop is $50. All materials are provided, including an Aniomagic Sparkle sensor kit with an approximate retail value of $40. No electronic experience needed, some experience with hand sewing is recommended. Register at etextilehalloween.eventbrite.com

About the instructors: Shannon Henry loves to make things that blend the science & tech world with art and crafts. She has been crafting with fabric since she could handle safety scissors, and began integrating electronics into her art in 2008. PDXScala Meeting
AboutUs

Come join us for another gathering of PDXScala, the Portland Scala users group. This is a casual group focused around the Scala programming language. We welcome both newcomers and experts alike.

Thomas Lockney will be presenting SBT (Simple Build Tool) as a convenient tool for exploring Java libraries with Scala. One of the primary benefits of Scala being available on the JVM is easy integration with existing Java code, but as any Java developer can tell you, it can take a lot of boilerplate to get started exploring a new library. Scala (and SBT) make it possible to shortcut through a lot of this excess code and get right to the heart of the matter.

Brian Panulla has generously agreed to be our first subject for a group code review. He'll be showing his program which converts an XML file to RDF/OWL and we'll have the opportunity, as a group, to look for ways to improve it.

We look forward to seeing you!
