At this Monthly Meeting of the Personal Telco Project, we'll be nominating people for an opening on the Board of Directors, as well as review existing and consider future projects and directions.

Weekly Meeting of the Personal Telco Project. May have a surprise guest to talk about stimulus funds and drink local beer.

Regular Monthly Meeting of the Personal Telco Project. This will include a discussion of node status, where work is needed, etc, as well as any other relevant discussion and socializing.

At this meeting, members will be deciding on two members of the Board of Directors, we can also talk about the status of our various efforts and how members and non-members can help make them fly.

First weekly meeting of the Personal Telco Project for the new year. Will talk about the infrastructure replacement project, board expansion, and much, much more. All while drinking local beers.

Come help plan the redeployment of some of the SkyPilot gear! Also, other new networks are afoot.

The Personal Telco Project actually still exists! Did you know that? Well, we do. No, really. We do! We are still here, helping educate and support people sharing their internet connections, for the 10th consecutive year. Will Personal Telco continue to exist in the future? Ah, now that is kind of up to you all. It probably will continue to exist, but it could be so much more if people like you that care come along and help out. Are you going to be that person? Or are you going to trust, against your understanding of the laws of physics, that an organization like the Personal Telco Project can persist without the continuous injection of volunteer spirit and enthusiasm. Be that difference.

Monthly Meeting of the Personal Telco Project. Will include a talk by Keith Lofstrom on his Server Sky project. The meeting is held in the back room, look for the PTP sign covering the "Employees Only" sign.

The Personal Telco Project Weekly Meeting and FooCab Workshop. The general idea is to have a workshop on the FooCabs (AlixCab and WgtCab), construction, flashing and administration. If you have an interest is how these things are being put together, suggestions (and patchs) for improvement, etc, this is a place to be. Should be fun.

Drop off your taxes at the post office on the way and enjoy a nice beer and conversation in the public interest or something.

We have a problem with federal telecommunications policy in the US. The problem is that federal regulators have decided that, instead of regulating, they would rely on competition, but competition doesn't occur naturally because of the de facto requirement to build your own infrastructure in order to compete. This leaves users vulnerable to economic predation by the owners of the infrastructure.

Municipal Broadband PDX is a newly formed group that wants to solve this problem by creating a publicly-owned network infrastructure.

Russell Senior, a member of Municipal Broadband PDX and president of the Personal Telco Project, has been advocating for this type of infrastructure for years. He'll talk to us about federal policy, the monopolistic conditions that result, and the abuses those monopolistic conditions allow. He'll also explain how a public telecommunications utility solves these problems and what such a network might look like. There will be a short video included in the presentation.

Bio: Russell Senior has been involved with the Personal Telco Project since 2005. The Personal Telco Project is a volunteer-based non-profit in Portland, founded in November 2000, that cares about network freedom. We operate public-access wifi networks in about about 60 locations around the area, where other volunteers have agreed to host them (you can too!). About 120,000 unique devices connect to our networks annually. About 5,000 of those are habitual users. If you connect to one of our networks, we don't know who you are, and we don't care what you do; we just ask you not to get the host of the network in trouble. Russell has been President of Personal Telco since 2009.

Russell has had a 20+ year career as a research programmer and data manager. He did a 13-month hitch at the National Science Foundation funded Science and Technology Center for Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction in 2015-2016 and got to work on ocean glider and fixed station measurement data. He did a week-long research cruise from Newport, Oregon to about Longview, Washington on the Columbia River, mapping the ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore mesh network they use, as well as participating in vertical profiling of the ocean, estuary and river waters. Russell has been using Linux since 1992 and has been doing embedded Linux programming, primarily OpenWrt/LEDE on wireless routers for over a decade and has helped develop wifi-based consumer products.

We are preparing to redeploy the first of our SkyPilots in a real network. The initial install is scheduled for this Saturday, February 12 adjacent to Arbor Lodge Park. This weekly will mostly center on preparation and planning for the install. We need warm bodies to help on Saturday, and coming early to help plan would help too. See you there!

Personal Telco recently received a couple SkyPilot SkyExtenders from the defunct MetroFi network for evaluation into whether some public/community value might be salvaged from them. In the process, we have dismantled one of them and learned some things. We'll have parts on display and a presentation on what we've learned and what remains to be learned.

The Personal Telco monthly meeting in March will discuss what a Broadband Stimulus proposal from PTP might look like. Come share your ideas, roll up your sleeves and help out! Make positive change in your community!

This is a maintenance work party for the Mississippi Community Wireless Network along N. Mississippi Avenue. The network is a project of the Personal Telco Project, starting in 2005. Recently, some of our rooftop gear has failed and needs replacing. Come see how a neighborhood-wide wifi network is constructed. Maybe you can do the same in your neighborhood too!

Another weekly meeting, at another location. Even though this is nominally a bar, the website says it is open to minors until 9pm.

There will be more Municipal Broadband PDX discussion in the build up to the second monthly demonstration at City Hall this weekend. Russell can report on his re-listen to the 2007 City Council Work Session on Community Fiber, and the general lack of imagination in evidence.

We will be installing two SkyPilot devices (salvaged from the failed MetroFi project) to begin construction of an Arbor Lodge Community Network. The work on Saturday will be partly mechanical, physically mounting things with wrenches and ladders. It'll be partly digital, configuring the hardware settings. You can help with your hands and your heads. Bring cameras to help document what we do. It's your network: pitch in, help and learn!
