TiE Oregon - Pitch Club
Zoom

Why Participate? Pitch Club is an event where entrepreneurs learn the criteria and methods used by real investors to evaluate their venture as a potential investment. This is done by recreating a typical investor meeting where a few companies pitch and receive feedback from TiE Oregon Charter Members. These meetings follow the same basic agenda of an investor meeting with three sections: the pitch, Q&A, and investor discussion & decision.

Who facilitates Pitch Club? Pitch Club is organized by Kari Naone, TiE Oregon Executive Director and led by Tom Kingsley, a TiE Charter Member who is an investor and successful entrepreneur.

What to expect? Please minimally prepare for a 5-minute pitch. If time permits each person could get up to 10 minutes so be prepared for that as well. This can include a slides/ppt that will be presented from your computer. Directly after pitching, Q&A and discussion will take place.

Those who attend pitch club will walk away with a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investor will ask. In addition, each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch and feedback from their peers and TiE Charter Members.

About the Startup Conversations Event Each month we host a local founder who will give a short presentation about their company. They will focus on how it all got started, where they are today, and their plans for the future including the challenges they face to make their goals happen.

Following the presentation our host, Dave Barcos will dig into the founder's background, the company's story, and other observations. After the interview, we will have an audience Q&A session to help attendees ask direct questions of the presenter. It has proven to be a great format to catalyze the local founders and the startups in the region. You won't want to miss it.

Equitable Networking Workshop
Garden Space

Why are we doing this?

The goal of this workshop is to provide a refreshing approach to networking. We coach individuals to confidently navigate networking events, ensuring they represent themselves well, understand expectations, and leverage their key skills to achieve their goals. Nobody gives proper training on how to approach these events, making it an oversight in our community. We want to change that! This 90-minute training is the first step in understanding how you can be and what you can do at networking events. I highly encourage those who frequent events to come to this training too. You experts can also come out of this with a new fun approach to the next event you go to.

Who is it for?

We aim to have people in leadership roles to people just starting out in their industries attend this workshop. With the intention to learn from one another no matter what experience level they are at. There is a lot to learn when we come together with intention and skill-sharing practices. An equitable networker seeks diverse gatherings and welcomes opportunities to share.

XOXO 2024
through Revolution Hall

Yeah, no kidding! We’re bringing XOXO back this August 22–24 to Revolution Hall in Portland, one last time.

After the last XOXO in 2019, we had decided to start wrapping things up, planning for one final festival in September 2020. Then obviously the pandemic arrived, derailing our plans entirely, and turns out, postponing them for almost four years.

Since 2019, XOXO sat unfinished in our imaginations, while we’ve watched the world continue to become a more challenging place for independent artists and creators. Many in our community are out of work, crushed by widespread layoffs across the media, games, and tech industries. It feels like many technology companies and platforms are doing everything they can to hurt artists instead of supporting them.

More than ever, we need community and solidarity, to hear each other’s stories, to experience and share our work with each other, to come together and organize to make things better.

What’s the State of Agile? No—Really: What’s the State of Agile?
Puppet

Frank D'Andrea and John Halberstadt will be discussing the 9th annual State of Agile survey.

This survey is the largest, broadest and most consistent annual public survey on agile adoption internationally. It provides an interesting look into which types of organizations are using agile and lean approaches, why, what is working for them and what is not. Everything from usage of specific frameworks and methodologies, to team practices to measurement techniques to software tools, and more, are part of this survey.

More than just a review of this survey, Frank and John will lead the dialogue - and potentially a friendly debate - with the Agile PDX audience to suggest "bigger picture" learnings and cautionary tales, as well as to collaborate on how those of us in the agile community can use this information to help within our organizations to further our processes and practices.

John Halberstadt is a Managing Agile Consultant, Coach and Trainer for LitheSpeed, an Agile and Lean-focused training and consulting organization. John has 20 years of diverse, senior-level technology leadership and experience throughout the SDLC, having led, grown and built teams including software engineers, quality assurance, product, program and project management, user experience and IT operations. John is a self-described "excessively pragmatic, lowercase 'a' agilist". He is a firm believer in agile's founding philosophy, principles and its potential to help build happy teams who deliver exceptional products.

Frank D’Andrea, a veteran of multiple Tech Ignite’s and the TAO Agile Smackdown is also Vice President of Software and Business Development at DADO Labs, connects clients, their brands, and their products to the Internet of Things (IoT). DADO’s Platform as a Service (PaaS) provides best-in-class hardware and software solutions for white-label, turn-key solution for a number of Internet of Things (IoT) clients whose products will be appearing in market over the next 6-12 months. He listens to clients and asks them thoughtful questions regarding direct product management, product direction, and product roadmap across social, mobile, SaaS, cloud, BigData in the IoT space, and identify how DADO can achieve their goals. He leads an experienced, multi-faceted engineering organization with both a software development team and product team of award-winning professionals.

We'll have discounted passes for the conference, so be sure to check out the OSCON site for all the detailed information about that event. PDMA Learning and Networking Event - Voice of the Customer
PSU Business Accelerator

The Oregon chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its first 2010 Learning and Networking Event; "Proven Techniques Turning Customer Requirements into Successful Products! Using 'Voice of the Customer' processes to develop products that meet REAL market needs."

A major component of business success is developing products that meet customer needs and provide superior value. Meeting customer needs requires that those needs be understood. The "voice of the customer" (VOC) is the term to describe the stated and unstated customer needs or requirements. The voice of the customer can be captured in a variety of ways: direct discussion or interviews, surveys, focus groups, customer specifications, observation, warranty data, field reports, etc.

This program will explore the practical side of collecting and using the VOC. Frank Binnendyk, and expert in VOC and a founder partner of Customer Alignment Consulting will explain the basics of this market research methodology. Then, three representatives from companies that have used the VOC research will provide a users' perspective. They will explain why and how they did it; how they used the information gathered; if it worked well or didn't meet their expectations and what were their VOC lessons learned. Ed de la Fuente VP of Marketing from Aperion Audio, John Williams Product Marketing Manager from FEI and Robert Buxton a High Tech B2B Professional will present company examples. The contrast between these types of companies will provide insights into how a VOC program can be scaled and adapted to meet the needs and resources of any company.

After presentations by the panelists, members of the audience can express opinions and ask questions of the panel during the Q&A session.

Clearview AI and the State of Biometrics at the US Federal Level
Online

Last year, the City of Portland banned the use of facial recognition technologies by municipal government and local businesses. While enactment of these facial recognition bans is an important local victory in the fight to protect our biometric privacy, what about use of facial recognition by the federal government?

Federal agencies are exempt from local laws, and although a number of national privacy bills are currently under consideration in Congress, some of those bills would preempt state and local privacy laws like ours. To review the current federal proposals, take a look at the great bill tracker by the International Association of Privacy Professionals located here: https://iapp.org/resources/article/us-federal-privacy-legislation-tracker/

Wondering which of these bills has the best chance of becoming law? Curious what the likelihood is of any privacy bill at all being adopted and implemented at the federal level? Well, you're in luck!

Adam Schwartz, Senior Staff Attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, has been working on privacy issues, including face surveillance, for over two decades and has agreed to talk with us about the state of the proposed federal bills. Since he'll be joining us and sharing his privacy-related insights, we've also asked him to talk about the Clearview AI lawsuit and how its outcome might affect the public and private use of facial recognition throughout the country.

Bring your questions and join the conversation!

Speaker bio:

Adam Schwartz joined EFF as a Senior Staff Attorney in 2015. He advocates before courts and legislatures against surveillance and censorship. He has represented travelers subjected to warrantless smartphone searches by border officers, dissidents seeking to speak in government social media, and customers of phone companies that unlawfully sold location data. He has filed amicus briefs addressing the right to record on-duty police, perpetual location-tracking of court-involved people, face surveillance by corporations of consumers, and overbroad laws against so-called "cyber stalking." Through FOIA enforcement litigation, he helped expose new information about AT&T's "Hemisphere" phone snooping program. He has worked to pass bills to protect consumer data privacy, and to stop high-tech surveillance of immigrants.

Previously, Adam worked at the ACLU of Illinois for 19 years, and clerked for Judge Betty B. Fletcher of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He earned a J.D. from Howard University and a B.A. from Cornell University.

The State of Portland's Start-up Scene
Hilton Portland and Executive Tower

Business start-ups play an important role in driving economic growth, promoting innovation, creativity, and creating new opportunities for individuals and communities.

Over the past few decades, Portland was a hub for entrepreneurs and start-ups. The city’s deep talent pool, prime location, relative affordability, and access to natural resources made the Rose City an ideal location for launching and growing a business. As recently as 2020, Portland was ranked as one of the best places in the country to start a new business.

But that was then. Flash forward three tumultuous years and we have to ask ourselves: is Portland still a good market for start-ups?

Join the Portland Business Alliance for our final Forum Breakfast of the season, as we explore the state of start-ups in Portland. Our panel of experts will share perspectives on the current ecosystem, highlight emerging local businesses, and reflect on what it will take to better support all of Portland’s entrepreneurial start-ups.

Speakers:

  • Kristy Edwards, Co-founder and CEO of Privacy Code
  • Steve Eichenlaub, Managing Director, Portland Seed Fund
  • Cara Turano, President and Executive Director, Oregon Entrepreneur Network
  • Ben Nahir, Venture Principal, Elevate Capital

7:15 Talk - How to use Espruino with WiFi - Roberto Santiago

Description: By now many if not most of us have had a chance to play with Espruino on the 8266 chip.  One of the prominent features of the 8266 chip is its WiFi capabilities.  The 8266 can serve not only as a WiFi client but also an access point.  It can even do both at the same time.  Impressively, some have been able to network together two 8266 chips from over a kilometer apart. We’ll review the basics of getting up and running with the 8266 and Espruino using flasher.js, go through a few examples of programming the WiFi capabilities and review some data about the distances these chips can cover.

Speaker Bio: Roberto Santiago is a technologist, data scientist and social justice advocate. He currently spends a lot of time nerding out on the IoT and Hadoop. Professionally, Roberto consults on big data and software projects. He is also founder of a new venture, Code for Nature, focused on bringing about the Internet of Nature. When not working you can find him exploring nature, smoking all sorts of meats and cooking up a feast for family and friends.

draft State of Food Report, part of the Multnomah Food Initiative
St. Francis Church Dining Hall

The Multnomah Food Initiative (http://www.thedirt.org/node/4386) will build on existing efforts to create a shared community vision and strategic action plan. It will mean forging partnerships, setting goals, and working collaboratively. Together, we will create a long-term vision and plan for a city and county that feeds itself – sustainably, healthily, equitably, and prosperously.

In planning for this initiative, Multnomah County is preparing a State of Food Report. This report will synthesize existing regional food system assessments and food policy recommendations. It will present case studies that identify processes used by other communities to facilitate food policy planning, including outcomes and best practices. It will also provide a needs-analysis to determine macro-level conditions necessary to implement recommendations and accomplish goals.

There is tremendous work being done in our community around food system issues. Multnomah County would like your feedback on what will be presented in the State of Food Report, as well as your comments on what may be missing or should be considered.

We respect people of all genders, identities, and the use of pronouns that best identify an individual.
