*LAST* PIE Demo Day, ever!
The Redd

After three years of virtual demo days, we're getting back to an in-person demo day! What's more, THIS WILL BE THE LAST PIE DEMO DAY, EVER.

Please join us for PIE Demo Day 2023 on August 10, 2023. Meet the startups from this year's PIE class, PIE alums, mentors, investors, and other members of the startup community during an event that diverges from the typical startup accelerator demo day format… plus a few more surprises.

Open to the public. All are welcome. You do not have to be an accredited investor to attend.

Participating startups include:

  • Ballroom
  • Binster
  • BIPOC Adoptees
  • Bonappaeat
  • Energy Kaizen
  • Finnegan the Dragon
  • Fridie Outdoors
  • HirelyAI
  • Intersectional Group
  • Joyous
  • Paloma
  • Photon Marine (special guest)
  • Thriving Design (alum)
  • Trace
  • Void

Featuring products from Built Accelerator participants and alums like:

  • Altitude
  • Deadstock
  • For Bitter, For Worse
  • Gather Nuts
  • Good Wolf
  • Hibisbloom
  • Kachka
  • Pan's
  • Sibeiho
  • … and more!

Taking learnings from both previous in-person and online events, PIE Demo Day 2023 will forego the typical “staged presentation” format in favor of a more interactive trade show format, with recorded pitches from participating startups being made available prior to the show at https://youtube.com/@piepdx.

“We would rather have members of the community stop by demo day for a few minutes to meet specific founders — or to wander the trade show floor — than require them to sit through all of the presentations before getting access to the startups that interest them,” said Rick Turoczy, cofounder and general manager of PIE. “We tested a virtual trade show format during the pandemic that provided this a more interactive environment for attendees than previous demo days — and the feedback from both attendees and founders was extremely positive. This year, we’re excited to test that more interactive format in person for the benefit of the entire Portland startup community.”

Not interested in meeting with the current PIE startups…?
Please show up anyway. After three years of seclusion, PIE Demo Day is the perfect way to connect — or reconnect — with the Portland startup community.

We hope to see you there!

30 hour day
through PIE: Portland Incubator Experiment

30 hour day is a cockamamie scheme concocted by Cami Kaos of Strange Love Live and Rick Turoczy of Silicon Florist. The concept? Livestream for 30 hours straight in an effort to raise money for charities like Free Geek, Oregon Food Bank, and Toys for Tots.

What's more, you can use our Creative Commons licensed content for a little charitable fundraising of your own. Just grab the stream and build an event around it, large or small.

Join us December 18 and 19 for 30 hours of entertainment, interviews, and interesting goings on—while helping some very worthwhile causes. All from the cozy warmth of your own Web browser.

3D Printed Jack O Lantern with a Digital Display
Portland Community Church

Do you have a creative idea for a Halloween costume? Or perhaps you want to show your awesome Jack-o'-lantern. Or what if you have brilliant ideas for decorations? We'd love to see them all!

I'll bring a 3d printed pumpkin and insert a screen for a fun display. I'll share how I customized it with fusion 360 to fit my display.

This project would work great if you have a raspberry pi or arduino with a screen. You can even connect motion and sound for an extra spooky experience.

If you would like to join the discussion check us out on Zoom https://zoom.us/j/7891236789. If you want to listen, we're also on Facebook Live https://www.facebook.com/KnowledgeMavens/.

Do you want to learn and share your passion in a supportive community? Knowledge Mavens is an ethos of sharing, creativity, and inspiration.

Our Meetup provides an opportunity to "Show and Tell" followed by a feedback and Q&A. You'll have the opportunity to share with our channels such as Meetup, GitHub, YouTube, and Facebook to connect with more passionate people.

The second half of our session we'll collaborate on new topics. The winner wins an award for the most interesting topic and the opportunity to share in an upcoming session.

52 Mobile Apps Kickoff
PIE: Portland Incubator Experiment

52 Mobile Apps is a year-long, week-by-week mobile app marathon which will take place throughout 2012.

This presentation will give an overview of our dream for the project, address questions and concerns for something so ambitious, and call for for your help with the project.

And how can you help with this project? There are about four things we need:

  1. Participants! Always wanted to work on an app, but you've been waiting for someone to impose a deadline? Now's your chance!

  2. Committee members and web presence types! We're a handful of people right now, and our website isn't even ready. We need people to help get the word out, vote on app proposals and keep others interested from now through December 2012.

  3. Article writers! Are you knowledgeable in mobile strategy, mobile culture, interaction design, prototyping, Java, Javascript, Objective C, XCode, PhoneGap, Titanium, or have any experience at all in the mobile development process? We definitely want to talk to you.

  4. Sponsorship! 52 Mobile Apps is going to be a giant, giant project, and we'd love to have a little backing, in any form. Let's talk about how you can help us help you help us.

52 Mobile Apps Rodamap Brainstorm
PIE: Portland Incubator Experiment

The initial reaction to 52 Mobile Apps has been really good, so we're going to start mapping out our next steps. Meet us at PIE to help figure out what it'll take to get things started.

We'll go over what's been discussed so far, and start to plan the roadmap for what should be tackled next, and start drumming up excitement for the project.

Categories we should hit first:

  • The website. It's ready, sort of.

  • Tutorials. First one should go live July 4th, so we have some time, but not tons.

  • The criteria for distributing and submitting app ideas, and the committee that will be voting on them.

See you there!

A Portland community effort to help those affected by the Intel layoffs
Falcon Building

By now, you've heard the news about the layoffs occurring at Intel, Oregon's largest employer. And now Jive, as well. Nearly 800 people from our community are now in the midst of searching for new jobs.

But you know what? In Portland, we have never been a community that shies away from making the best out of every situation. Or from supporting one another. And that's not going to change anytime soon. Especially now.

That's why a bunch of us are banding together to figure out ways to help those folks affected.

Why? Because we're a community. And this is what communities do.

Asking the right questions with Leah Noble Davidson of Because Human
Online

Join PIE as we talk with Leah Noble Davidson, Chief Experience Officer at Because Human.

Leah has consulted within Portland’s startup tech industry for 10 years, working with larger teams from Jive and Puppet to startups like Torch and BeyondPulse.

Having newly ventured into the role of a founder, she’ll be asking questions from the perspective of a female design professional who can speak the language — but is only now really learning how to juggle the risks and rewards firsthand.

Finding answers is one thing. Knowing the questions to ask is entirely another. Leah — a professional asker of questions — will help us hone in on the right questions, provide the necessary reality checks, and share ideas about leveraging the startup community to find the help you need as your startup grows from a concept into being a real business.
