Portland has a fairly lively Clojure ecosystem -- how can we leverage that base and become a hub of Clojure culture?

The biggest opportunity appears to be in helping newcomers connect the dots. The language was designed to be clear, consistent, practical, and empowering -- this talk will explore how we can apply those principles to support the local scene and create an onboarding model other groups can use.

Un-Redacting the Mueller Report and Abstracting the News with NLP By Hobson Lane and Al Kari

Hobson will show you how to write a python "mad-libber" that can unredact the Mueller Report. The first person to correctly predict the next word better than the mad-libber will win an autographed copy of Natural Language Processing in Action, a book produced through open collaboration among Portland Python User Group Members, led by Cole Howard and Hannes Hapke. Then Hobson and Al Kari will show you how they use this same state-of-the-art language model to generate meaningful abstractive summaries of technical documents like clinical medical records.

About our speakers: Hobson Lane's first Python apps were built with the help of friends at the Portland Python User Group almost a decade ago. Since then he's been using Python for everything from chatbots to building energy consumption forecasting. He's now CTO at Deep Canopy where they build smart cameras for industry. In his spare time Hobson teaches Python and data science on Springboard.com, Thinkful.com, and Totalgood.com and preaches crackpot ideas for harnessing the pending AI explosion for the greater good.

Al Kari is a Google Developer Expert (GDE) in Machine Learning, organizer of the TensorFlow-Northwest meetup group and CEO of Manceps, an engineering company focused on providing intelligent automation solutions to innovative businesses.

Talk by Logan Kleier Talk by Logan Kleier - Logan is the chief information security and privacy officer for the City of Portland. Prior to this role, he worked in the private sector in a variety of product management and marketing roles for software and telecommunications companies. He has a Bachelors of Arts in history and political science and a Masters in public policy from Georgetown University.

The presentation presents a framework to aid government decision makers in the publication of various data sets. While government data is generally presumed to be a public record, this presentation will talk about use cases where it is not as well as grey areas where the law and public sentiment differ on notions of what government data is and isn't private.

Valerie Calvo is a Data Governance Manager for CBRE Investment Management, joining the firm in 2022. She directly supports data-driven ambitions by setting and realizing the firm’s Data Governance strategy and championing data democratization. Come along and join us to talk about A Web For Everyone by Sarah Horton and Whitney Quesenbery, which is a very useful book on accessibility and universal design. Additionally, we're going to be joined by Whitney on Skype to discuss creating digital content for everyone, including people with disabilities. Accessibility is a huge subject, and one that is frequently overlooked by designers and developers, even though there are laws covering the rights of people (for example, employees and members of the public) to be able to access information.

Come along with any of your team to discuss the important topic of accessibility and how it's not something you tack on at the end of a project, but something that can improve the usability of a product for everyone.

The 2020s have seen new and complex challenges for those fighting for reproductive freedom. In September of last year, the Texas legislature passed one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the nation, prohibiting all procedures after 6 weeks, without exceptions for rape or incest. But SB8 goes further, giving citizens with no connection to the woman the right to sue in civil court any person who aids her in seeking an abortion. As Planned Parenthood states, this means that “private citizens can sue other Texans for having or aiding in the procurement of an abortion — they can sue anyone from the person who drives the patient to the clinic to the doctor who performs the abortion.” (https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/planned-parenthood-pennsylvania-advocates/blog/how-did-texas-get-to-sb8) As the EFF predicts, “The result will be a chilling effect on speech and a litigation cudgel that will be used to silence those who seek to give women truthful information about their reproductive options.”

Since 2017, the Digital Defense Fund has brought engineers and organizers together to provide security and technology support for the abortion access movement. Kate Bertash, Director of the DDF, will speak during our January event about the critical work the DDF does to create "a future where technology and innovation support secure, autonomous reproductive decisions, free from stigma.”

Kate Bertash (she/her) is Director of the Digital Defense Fund, a team providing technology and security resources and front-line support to the American abortion access movement. She brings together a background in nonprofit fundraising and technology, and left startup life after co-organizing the Abortion Access Hackathons and Debug Politics Hackathons. In her free time she helps organize the Crypto and Privacy Village at DEFCON, designs fabrics, and is working on building a science research and education center here in the Pacific Northwest.
