Awesome Mobile Web Tools and Frameworks — Mobile Portland
Cloudability

Interested in building apps using core web technology—HTML5, Javascript and CSS?

Then you don’t want to miss Mobile Portland this month as we take a look at three awesome tools and frameworks for mobile web development.

We’re pleased to welcome James Pearce, Brian LeRoux and Patrick Mueller to Portland. They’ve graciously agreed to take time out from their busy OSCON schedules to talk to us about:

  • World Premiere! Client-side data-bound mobile charting with Sencha Touch
  • Cloud-based app binaries using PhoneGap Build.
  • Weinre: a remote debugger for web pages on mobile device.

If you’re doing any mobile web development work, these are tools you need to know about. And given the number of apps that include embedded web views, it means nearly everyone is doing some sort of mobile web development.

Special OSCON Note

Mobile Portland is a free monthly meeting open to anyone. If you are in town for OSCON, please feel free to join us. All that we ask is that you RSVP so we know how many chairs we need.

You can take the MAX train for free from the convention center and then take a short walk (.4 mi) to the meeting location.

If you’re a Portlander who isn’t attending OSCON, you should! Not only is the largest open source conference, but there are mobile tracks with detailed presentations from Patrick Mueller and two of Brian LeRoux’s Nitobi colleagues.

About the Speakers

Brian LeRoux, Nitobi SPACELORD!1!!, PhoneGap Contributor, Mobile Web Enthusiast, Tolerant of JavaScript, Trucker Mouth

Brian LeRoux is the lead at Nitobi Software with the prestigious title SPACELORD!1!! He also has the dubious distinction of being the creator of wtfjs.com despite a twisted love for the language of the web. To make matters worse he actually has a non-breaking space tattoo.

Aside all these ridiculous distractions he is also responsible for leading the direction on the wildly popular PhoneGap software project that has the audacious goal to provide a web platform complete with device APIs for all smartphone operating systems.

James Pearce, Senior Director of Developer Relations, Sencha

James is a technologist, writer, developer & entrepreneur who has been working with the mobile web for over a decade. He is Senior Director of Developer Relations at Sencha. Previously he was the CTO at dotMobi and has a background in mobile startups, telecoms infrastructure and management consultancy.

He speaks extensively on the topic of mobile web development, and has written books for both Wiley and Wrox.James led the development of mobiForge, DeviceAtlas and ready.mobi, and is the creator of tinySrc, the WordPress Mobile Pack, and WhitherApps. He has declared every year since 1997 to be "The Year of the Mobile Web" - and feels like he might finally be right.

Patrick Mueller, WebKit contributor, IBM

Patrick Mueller is a software developer at IBM in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. He’s been working on web software and mobile software for a long time. Don’t ask how long, unless you want to hear about how great it was to use Smalltalk for web and mobile software development.

Beer and Blog - Open Source Bridge

Hi friends! Rick Turoczy asked me if he and the Open Source Bridge crew could lead some discussion tomorrow @beerandblog. I think what they are up to is valuable to the Portland community and her tech scene, so I said yes. If you’re not yet familiar with Open Source Bridge, they are a group of local techies that want to continue OSCON now that they are not coming back to Portland. But, they’re growing into much more than that. Here’s what they say on their about page:

We are advocates, developers, and Portlanders making the world better with open source technology.

Open Source Bridge will bring together the diverse tech communities of the greater Portland area and showcase our unique and thriving open source environment. We will show how well Portland does open source and share our best practices for development, community and connectedness with the rest of the world.

We’re setting out to change the structure of conference planning: asking interested people to come together at a Town Hall meeting, and share their collective experience and wisdom. Following the lead of the Linux Plumbers Conference, we’re enlisting curators for our conference sessions, planning mini-confs for critical topics and including unconference sessions. The focus will always be on increasing interaction between participants and engaging everyone in the content.

Dev Nation
Ace Hotel

In early 2009, several developers from Relevance and Viget Labs got together and starting talking about technical conferences. As we discussed our past experiences at regional, national, and international events, we began to realize something: large conferences are wonderful for a lot of things, but we wanted something that met a different set of goals. We came up with Developer Day, which was designed to:

  • Build lasting relationships among local peers
  • Bridge distinct technical communities

After a year of Developer Days, however, we decided a new look was in order, and thus was born DevNation. We've still got the same ideals, but we feel that the DevNation name better reflects that vision (and it's easier to Google!)

Relationships

The general pattern for a large conference runs something like this: you fly to a city, go to the event, have a great time, meet lots of great people, and fly home. More often than not, you don't see those people again until the next big conference, and that's a problem. We wanted our event to be different, so it's intentionally local. Speakers and attendees are overwhelmingly local to the conference, so when you meet someone doing something cool, you can connect with them a week later for lunch without a problem.

Technology-Agnostic

Sure, there are events that draw a wide range of developers (e.g., OSCON), but even then people tend to segregate; the Pythonists go to their sessions, the Rubyists to theirs, and the PHP devs to theirs. By having only one track, we give everyone the opportunity to see what's happening in other communities.

Docker Meetup
New Relic

Hey Docker Portland! Gear up for our next meetup at New Relic! We nabbed Docker's Jérôme Petazzoni, Digital Insight's Kenny Bastani, and EMC's Jonas Rosland, all of whom will be in town for OSCON. See you there!

Agenda

6:00pm - Welcome/ Food & Beverage thanks to New Relic!

6:30pm - Kenny Bastani: Building Microservices with Spring Cloud and Docker

In this talk I will introduce you to the Spring Cloud platform for building cloud-native applications in Java. We will take a look at some of the common patterns for microservice architectures and how to use Docker to containerize multiple microservices as a part of a Maven build process.

We will then dive into a microservices example project of a cloud-native application built on Spring Cloud. Using this example project, I'll show you how to use Docker Compose to spin up a microservice cluster on a development machine. We will then perform a series of end-to-end tests without needing to deploy to a test environment.

By the end of the talk we will cover the following topics:

• Implementing service discovery using Docker containers

• How to use a config service to externalize environment configurations

• How to route REST API requests through an API gateway

• Building container images as a part of a Maven build

• How to do end-to-end testing using Docker Compose on a development machine

7:00pm - Jonas Rosland: Scale-out data persistence for all your stateful container needs

7:30pm - Jérôme Petazzoni: Deep dive into Copy-on-Write and Docker storage drivers

The first release of Docker only supported AUFS, and AUFS was available (out of the box) only on Debian and Ubuntu kernel. Then Red Hat wanted Docker to run on its distros, and contributed the Device Mapper driver, and later the BTRFS driver, and recently the overlayfs driver. Docker 1.7 has support for ZFS. We will present how those drivers compare from a high-level perspective, explaining their pros and cons. This will help the audience to make more informed decisions when picking the most appropriate driver for their workloads. Then we will see each driver in action, and look at low-level implementation details. We won't dive into the golang implementation code itself, but we will explain the concepts of each driver. This will help to better understand how they work, and give some hints when it comes to troubleshoot their behavior.

Drupal Users Group
OpenSourcery

This crazy Portland heatwave must be getting to me, because we're totally mixing things up for the July Drupal user group!

  1. We've got free pizza thanks to the fine folks at Lullabot & Drupalize.me and free beer & drinks thanks to OpenSourcery. So we'll start off the meetup with 30 minutes of socializing and eating (and even some pinballing!). If you or your company would like to sponsor pizza for future DUGs, drop a comment below.

  2. No presenters at this months meetup. We'll be breaking up into teams and competing for 1 hour to make the most awesome, fun, random Drupal site using the mystery set of modules provided. Each site will need building, coding and theming of all levels in order to win, so everyone from the n00best-of-sitebuilders to the most experienced Drupal core contributor can help their team.

  3. I know that fame and karma are pretty big motivators in the Drupal community, but in case those aren't enough, we'll also have prizes for the winners. The OReilly people have donated a 3 day pass to OSCon that we'll be giving away along with some other goodies.

So remember to bring a laptop and come hungry... for pizza and to win!

We'll still be heading to the Lucky Lab NW on Quimby & 19th after the meetup for continued socializing and revelry.

Since much of the conference focused on Drupal 7, feel free to highlight a Drupal 7 feature that you're excited about, whether or not it corresponds to a specific session.
  • OSCon Booth sarah_p (10 minutes)
  • Get the details on the DrupalPDX presence at OSCon.
