Topic: "Design Patterns" in Dynamic Languages

The Gang of Four book should have been entitled "Palliatives for Statically Typed Languages", because the recipes it provides are cumbersome solutions to the problems it poses. Using powerful languages makes the solutions in the GoF book look hopelessly complicated. This session shows how to solve the same problems concisely, elegantly, and with far fewer lines of code using the facilities of dynamic languages.

Speaker: Neal Ford

Neal Ford is an Application Architect for ThoughtWorks. He is an architect, designer, and developer of applications, instructional materials, magazine articles, and video/DVD presentations. Neal is also the author of Developing with Delphi: Object-Oriented Techniques (Prentice Hall PTR, 1996), JBuilder 3 Unleashed (SAMS Publishing, 1999), and Art of Java Web Development (Manning, 2003). His language proficiencies include Java, C#/.NET, Ruby, Object Pascal, C++, and C. Neal's primary consulting focus is the design and construction of large-scale enterprise applications. He is also an internationally acclaimed speaker, having spoken at over 30 developers' conferences worldwide.

Now in its third year, the annual Portland conference known for creating community, building skills, and supporting empowered women in technology is back. And not only does it have a fancy new name and branding, but it has expanded to a full weekend!

This year, in partnership with the Art Institute of Portland, four Portland WIT organizations passionate about increasing the numbers of women in tech are organizing a weekend of career-building interactive booths, breakout sessions, networking, technical workshops, a career fair, and inspiration. Women of all levels of interest and involvement in tech are invited to attend. Whether you have a lot to learn or a bit to teach, we hope you join us! Classic silo-driven IT delivery models are being challenged by the agility of a Cloud-first world. In this session led by Jordan Smith – Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure TSP from Microsoft, we will explore how Azure can enable automated and rapid workload provisioning utilizing industry standard REST APIs.

We’ll discuss subscription architecture and security, the storing and retrieval of secrets, automation workflow, ARM template authoring with automation in mind, and demonstrate the provisioning of an n-tier application architecture using a simple API call.

Want to understand the basics behind all the cool gadgets we use every day? It all starts with circuits! And we’ll have a fun activity for beginners.

What is this event? It’s a combination movie showing and hands-on activity. It’s a chance for high school girls to meet women in technology and a chance for women in technology to be inspired by high school girls!

Are you one of the bazillion SharePoint users that have long been confounded by the fact that Microsoft doesn’t offer a no-code way to do filtered and cascading dropdowns in list forms? Sure, we had InfoPath for a while, but InfoPath is now on life support. At long last there is an answer; using PowerApps, we can customize Modern UI list forms to implement filtered and cascading drop downs. And we don’t even have to write any code. In this session Derek Nishino will walk you through implementing filtered and cascading dropdowns, including the formulas and other PowerApps elements needed to make them work.
