Portland Linux/Unix Group General Monthly Meeting: A Network Relay through a Cloud Instance; and Retro Linux Tape Recovery Show and Tell – Oregon Latvian Community Center Who: Russell Senior The first part is going to be a description of how I relay network connections from the Internet to my low-volume home-based email server to evade potential ISP blockages. The second part is going to be a show and tell about my resurrection of an ancient Linux version in order to recover data from Quarter Inch Cartridge tapes and ancillary topics. It will also include a short demo of my MS-DOS 5.0 environment also (resurrected from tape) the month before I installed Linux for the first time in December 1992. About Russell: I am a person for whom the Year of the Linux Desktop started in 1992 and has continued annually, uninterrupted. I worked for a couple decades in scientific data management and analysis. Since 2005, I have been involved with the Personal Telco Project, a volunteer-based 501c3 non-profit trying to unscrew telecommunications policy in the Portland metropolitan area. I did a short stint in data management for an Oceanographic organization when it was housed at OH&SU. I also volunteer at Portland State Aerospace Society working on their OreSat program. My name, misspelled in glorious circuit board silkscreen, has literally been in orbit for most of the last 2 years. I have done a bunch of PLUG talks over the years. Rules and Requests: Masks are encouraged but not required. PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings Do not leave valuables in your car |

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Russell's Excellent High Altitude Balloon Adventure – Online Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement Who: Russell Senior Russell volunteers with the Portland State Aerospace Society's (PSAS) OreSat program as an Industry Advisor. PSAS is a rocket club at Portland State University. The OreSat program works towards having small interactive satellites put into orbit by friendly launch services. OreSat currently consists of three small satellites based on a common design, the first one is due to launch in January. Russell's role is to help out with a system called dxwifi, a long distance S-band communication link. The goal is for ground-based student groups around the state to receive live video broadcast from orbit as the satellite passes overhead. Earlier this year, a high school student applied and got our satellite a ride on a high altitude balloon through a NASA program. One of the goals was to capture wifi data being transmitted by the payload. Because of the distances involved, this requires aiming a directional antenna at the balloon. This talk will tell the story of how Russell waded his way towards a solution using math, some hand tools, open-source software and some ingenuity. About Russell: Russell has been a Linux user since 1992. He worked for a few decades doing data management, programming, and analysis for a small scientific consulting firm. Since 2005 he has been deeply involved in the Personal Telco Project and trying to bring about telecommunications policy in the users interests, while also hacking on router firmware. Since 2018, he's been involved in an effort to bring at-cost fiber infrastructure to the Portland metro area, Municipal Broadband PDX. PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings. |

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Reading wireless temperature sensors with RTL-SDR and rtl_433 – Portland State University Fourth Avenue Building (FAB) Room FAB 86-01 Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement Who: Russell Senior
What: Reading wireless temperature sensors with RTL-SDR and rtl_433 Russell has been measuring an array of temperature sensors in and around his house since October-ish 2011, primarily Dallas Semiconductor DS18B20 one-wire sensors (previously talk: 2013-06-06 Hacking on the Beagle Bone Black). For years, he's had a few Oregon Scientific wireless temperature sensors outside, but no way to log the temperatures for posterity. About a year ago, in early December 2018, he discovered a project called rtl_433 that uses a software defined radio to receive and decode the signals coming from these and similar sensors. so that they can be logged. This talk will describe a few of the things that are possible with rtl_433 and what Russell does and doesn't do with the data. About Russell: Russell has been a Linux user since 1992. He worked for a few decades doing data management, programming, and analysis for a small scientific consulting firm. Since 2005 he has been deeply involved in the Personal Telco Project and trying to bring about telecommunications in the users interests, while also hacking on router firmware. For two years, he's been involved in an active effort to bring publicly-owned fiber infrastructure to the Portland metro area (in furtherance of the Personal Telco goal). He has a possibly unnatural love for serial consoles and RS-232, but is too smitten to be ashamed. He describes himself as self-under-employed. Will work on Linux'y things for money. Will work on Science'y/measurement'y things for money, as long as Linux is or can be involved somehow. He's very interested in trying to solve your telemetry problems with off-the-shelf wifi equipment and some elbow grease, if you've got some. Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting. Ride shares to the Lucky Lab available PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings. |

"Tungsten Fabric: Open Source Multi-Cloud Networking at Scale" @ PAzUG – Marquam Tungsten Fabric (http://www.tungsten.io; formerly OpenContrail) is an open source, scalable and multi-cloud networking platform. Large enterprises and service providers are using it at massive production scale, and this meetup offers some tips, insights, and "don't go theres" from users with success stories (and some battle scars). Come to this meetup to learn how users are deploying Tungsten Fabric for load balancing, HA, service chaining, analytics/orchestration and extending network to multi private / public clouds viz., AWS, Azure and Google. Sanju Abraham will be our speaker. Sanju Abraham will deliver a project overview, showcase users and use cases. Then, we’ll dive into a demo of Kubernetes with Tungsten Fabric across onprem and AWS. We’ll demonstrate the ability to access Kubernetes and launch new containers, access the Tungsten Fabric UI, and observe the network state. Tungsten Fabric is integrated with Kubernetes, VMware and OpenStack. It also supports public cloud deployments including AWS, Google and Azure. As both Enterprise and Telco IT architectures evolve, supporting multi-cloud environments is table stakes. This meetup will lay out how users can quickly get going with Tungsten Fabric, using software-driven networking and policy management to operate in a multi-cloud environment. If you’re interested in networking for private clouds running OpenStack, Kubernetes, and VMware that also rely on services from AWS, Google and Azure, this meetup is for you! Agenda: 5:00pm – Welcome time 5:30pm – Catering served 5:45pm – Group announcements and presentation 7:30pm – Wrap up. PLEASE RSVP ON THE MEETUP PAGE |

Breaking Telco Monopoly Power through Public Ownership of Infrastructure – Northwest Academy We have a problem with federal telecommunications policy in the US. The problem is that federal regulators have decided that, instead of regulating, they would rely on competition, but competition doesn't occur naturally because of the de facto requirement to build your own infrastructure in order to compete. This leaves users vulnerable to economic predation by the owners of the infrastructure. Municipal Broadband PDX is a newly formed group that wants to solve this problem by creating a publicly-owned network infrastructure. Russell Senior, a member of Municipal Broadband PDX and president of the Personal Telco Project, has been advocating for this type of infrastructure for years. He'll talk to us about federal policy, the monopolistic conditions that result, and the abuses those monopolistic conditions allow. He'll also explain how a public telecommunications utility solves these problems and what such a network might look like. There will be a short video included in the presentation. Please join us for this informative presentation and discussion! We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there! Schedule: 6:00 PM: Doors 6:10 PM: Introductions and news 6:15 PM: Presentation 7:15 PM: Q&A 7:30 PM: Wrap up and networking Bio: Russell Senior has been involved with the Personal Telco Project since 2005. The Personal Telco Project is a volunteer-based non-profit in Portland, founded in November 2000, that cares about network freedom. We operate public-access wifi networks in about about 60 locations around the area, where other volunteers have agreed to host them (you can too!). About 120,000 unique devices connect to our networks annually. About 5,000 of those are habitual users. If you connect to one of our networks, we don't know who you are, and we don't care what you do; we just ask you not to get the host of the network in trouble. Russell has been President of Personal Telco since 2009. Russell has had a 20+ year career as a research programmer and data manager. He did a 13-month hitch at the National Science Foundation funded Science and Technology Center for Coastal Margin Observation and Prediction in 2015-2016 and got to work on ocean glider and fixed station measurement data. He did a week-long research cruise from Newport, Oregon to about Longview, Washington on the Columbia River, mapping the ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore mesh network they use, as well as participating in vertical profiling of the ocean, estuary and river waters. Russell has been using Linux since 1992 and has been doing embedded Linux programming, primarily OpenWrt/LEDE on wireless routers for over a decade and has helped develop wifi-based consumer products. Personal Telco Project Weekly Meeting with Municipal Fiber discussion – Buffalo Gap, This is our first Weekly Meeting of 2018. To get the new year off to a running start, we are going to lead off the meeting with a discussion about Municipal Fiber. I am always ready to talk about it, but particularly so this time because the simmering pot of public opinion had an extra jolt of fire over the holidays with the retrograde FCC vote, voiding the Open Internet rules that the previous Wheeler FCC had adopted, and has begun to boil over. A number of scattered efforts have emerged trying to push a municipal internet system (e.g. on Facebook and Reddit). I have invited a number of them to our meeting. I also saw David Olson (BCC'd) this morning and invited him to come along, which he suggested was a possibility, although he has another engagement, so he'll need to leave after the first hour. And we have a smattering of other business on the agenda. Should be fun! See you there! |

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting: Hacking on the Beagle Bone Black – PSU Maseeh Engineering Building Hacking on the new Beagle Bone Black Description: Russell recently spent some time working on porting a house-monitoring system from the Beagle Bone (an $89 embedded, ARM-based, I/O rich device running linux http://beagleboard.org/) to the new Beagle Bone Black, a $45 device which is faster, includes video and 2G of onboard flash. The sensors required a one-wire bus, one of which the original Beagle Bone had configured out of the box. The Beagle Bone Black had none. This talk is a description of what it took to get one-wire (specifically w1-gpio) going with his own custom "cape" (a daughter-board for the Beagle Bone). Biography: Russell Senior has been a GNU/Linux user for over 20 years, since the 0.99plN days, using it both recreationally and professionally as a research programmer/scientific data analyst. Since 2005, Russell has become involved as a principal volunteer with the Personal Telco Project (https://personaltelco.net), during which he has worked on embedded systems, primarily network routers. He contributes to the development and improvement of the OpenWrt project. In the last couple years, he has worked on monitoring systems involving Arduino and, since last year, the Beagle Bone and has learned a bit about the Angstrom distribution of linux for embedded devices. Many will head to the Lucky Lab NW after the meeting |

Personal Telco Project's "Build OpenWrt" Play Day – World Cup Coffee The Personal Telco Project uses OpenWrt heavily in devices it uses to build wifi infrastructure around Portland, almost always building the firmware from source, adapted to the particular purpose. The purpose might be a standardized node, a mesh networking node, or it might be a highly adapted solution to something like a data logger application. This play day is intended to help spread the knowledge of how Personal Telco constructs these firmwares and, more generally, the finer points of how to build OpenWrt for any particular purpose you might have. And, if you find we do it in an idiotic way, you can suggest improvements. ;-) This is a hands-on event. Bring yourself, your curiosity, and a linux box you can build on (or a way to connect over the network to one, like me). You can bring a device too, but this is primarily a software-focused event. If there is enough time, we could start looking at flashing problems. If there is enough interest, we could have a follow up Play Day that focuses on those issues, a kind of Linux Clinic for your router. Come on out and have some fun! |
