\nSummer is also for ice cream!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSo July’s Tech Tuesday is
about kids and ice cream!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOkay. It’s about kids - but we
’ll have ice cream.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis month we’re bringing in three lo
cal organizations who are working with kids and teens to help them build
the skills necessary for careers in technology. Leaders from ChickTech
\, iUrban Teen\, and Girls Inc. will be talking with us about who they a
re\, what they’re doing\, and how you can get involved in their efforts.
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThese folks are doing really awesome things for youth an
d we’re excited to have them in the eBay house.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs Whitne
y Houston crooned\, “Children are our future. Teach them well and let th
em lead the way.” So come\, listen\, and learn about what you can do to
help shape the bright young minds that are the future of tech - and rea
lly\, the future in general.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSee you July 28th!&#13\;\n&#
 13\;\n&#13\;\nDetails:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDoors open at 5:45pm\, presentatio

DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence\, or AI\, is currently in the news al
most every day — chatbots like ChatGPT\, image generators like Dall-E\,
and a host of other tools are now available and being put to use in a va
riety of ways.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhile these software algorithms can potent
ially help us to work faster and smarter\, there are many issues to cons
ider in whether and how to implement them. Details that must be addresse
d include: What data is being used to train the language models? Who own
s the source data and the outputs that are generated? How accurate are t
he models? How much human oversight of the model-building process is the
 re? And what are the potential harms when things go wrong?&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nThese algorithms are already being used to make decisions about people
’s lives\, like whether a person gets a job or a bank loan and how much
time a person convicted of a crime might spend in jail\, but students in
particular are having their lives and actions analyzed more and more ev
ery day. For instance\, proctoring software tries to determine whether s
tudents are cheating on exams\, other software looks for plagiarism in s
tudent essays and reports\, and there’s even software that analyzes emot
ions and/or physical objects — Is the student happy or angry? Are they h
olding a cellphone or a gun?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis month\, leaders from En
code Justice Oregon — Maansi Singh\, Sahana Srinivasan\, and Julianne Hu
ang — will join us to share their experiences and their work on drafting
policy recommendations for use of AI in schools. They’ll speak about th
eir concerns and how they think these technologies should be used in edu
cational settings. They'll also discuss the upcoming Youth Citizens Asse
mbly\, which will give students an opportunity to add their voices to th
e digital privacy conversation and pitch their own ideas.&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nCome join us\, and bring your questions and thoughts about AI in school
s!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPlease RSVP via the Meetup link or by sending an email
  to ta3mevents@pdxprivacy.org.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker bios:&#13\
;\n&#13\;\nEncode Justice is a global coalition of youth activists fight
ing for justice and accountability in the digital age. Oregon’s chapter\
, Encode Justice Oregon\, works to educate their school\, local and stat
ewide communities about algorithmic fairness while supporting legislatio
n that encourages the safe and effective implementation of new technolog
ies. From working with the Oregon DOJ's Consumer Privacy Task Force to e
ngaging in connections with the Electronic Frontier Foundation\, Smart C
ity PDX\, PDX Privacy\, and Rose Haven\, Encode Justice Oregon has estab
lished a statewide presence centered around furthering the digital priva
cy and equitable technology movement.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMaansi Singh is a s
enior at Jesuit High School in Portland\, Oregon. She is the Founder and
Executive Director of the Encode Justice Oregon Chapter. Maansi has par
ticipated in discussions surrounding the role of youth advocacy in AI et
hics with organizations such as the United Nations\, Washington Post\, G
oogle\, ACLU\, Meta and the World Economic Forum. Maansi believes that i
ntellectual curiosity and the pursuit of new questions surrounding AI ar
e ontological components of the ongoing discussion about human rights. T
hrough Encode Justice and other efforts\, she has pursued the intersecti
on between computer science\, ethics\, policy and education. &#13\;\n&#1
3\;\nSahana Srinivasan is a sophomore at Jesuit High School. She is the
Director of Education for Encode Justice Oregon. She is especially inte
rested in the intersection of AI in medicine. AI ethics is important to
her because in the medical field\, it is critical that AI systems are bo
 th accurate\, reliable\, and without bias.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJulianne Huang
serves as the Co-Director of Research for Encode Justice’s Oregon Chapt
er. Her position allows her to bring a youth voice into the AI Ethics co
nversation and inspires her to continue being an advocate for people lik
e her who have grown up in a tech-centered world. Outside of EJ\, she is
a math and science enthusiast who enjoys participating in dance and cho
 ir.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBy attending this TA3M meeting\, you
