DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our initial meeting of the HTML5-PDX group.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nFor this meeting we will first cover the purpose and goals of t
he group. In short that is all things HTML5\; canvas\, web workers\, nat
 ive video\, client-side storage\, Geolocation API\, ... &#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Though the main purpose of this initial meeting will be covering the sta
te of HTML5 support in the major browsers. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis group a
lso encapsulates Open Web Games and that meeting will immediately follow
the presentation from this meeting. Since the groups have so much in c
 ommon\, expect continuing future interaction between them.&#13\;\n&#13\;
\n&#13\;\nFuture meeting will be every 3rd Monday of the month\, at this
  same venue and time.\n\nTags: html5\, web standards\, firefox\, ie\, op

DESCRIPTION:Tonight we'll have the first of our Semantic Web application
demos. Three lovely volunteers will be showing actual applications that
use Semantic Web technologies in various states of development. &#13\;\n
&#13\;\nBrian Panulla will show a system for building and interacting wi
th rubrics - tools for educators to facilitate assessment and grading of
student assignments.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nLeif Warner will be demonstrating a
semantic web system modeling complex and shifting state of the local Po
rtland music scene. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nPaul Daigle will be demonstrating a
semantic system for identity management. The model cross-links between a
uthenticated social objects (people\, groups\, time\, location) and asso
ciated media (data\, content) to help manage access. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nSo
 come\, listen\, discuss!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf you've got an app you'd like
to talk about\, contact the organizer at http://www.meetup.com/pdxsemweb

DESCRIPTION:Unfortunately\, tonight's speaker Micah and his family have c
ome down with the flu\, and he will not be able to speak tonight. We'll
still hold the meetup\, but we'll set up for a Bring Your Own Project ni
ght: bring a project to share (or get help with)\, or come ready to give
help to others. We're working on rescheduling Micah for February. We'll
leave the talk description up for now to give you an idea of what's comi
 ng. --------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------- For the final Meetup of 2017\,
we welcome back Micah Godbolt to talk design systems! About the talk:HTM
L and CSS are all you need to create a Design System that unifies the vi
sual appearance of your products\, but as soon as you want to create con
sistent behavior between applications\, you'll need to turn to JavaScrip
 t. More often than not\, using a modern framework such as React\, Vue\,
or Angular will save you lots of time\, and keep you from reinventing th
e wheel. In this talk\, I will discuss how moving interactivity into the
Design System is not only a good choice today\, but is most certainly h
ow you will be creating Design Systems in the future. I'll also be discu
ssing the React-powered Design System I've been helping to create which
powers a few apps you might have heard of\, including SharePoint\, OneDr
ive\, and Outlook for the web. About the speaker:Micah Godbolt\, a Senio
 r Design Developer at Microsoft\, is a Front-end Architect\, author\, sp
eaker\, trainer\, blogger and developer from the Portland area. Event De
tails Food\, drinks\, and conversation beginning at 6:30. The talk begi
ns around 7:00. Parking is available in the parking lot directly across
the street from the Connective DX office on Pettygrove. There are also b
ike racks available just inside the entrance to the building.\n\nTags: m

DESCRIPTION:This month we're excited to have Josh Nelson join us to talk
through making in-browser\, multiplayer games\, using a recent project c
alled PlinkoJS as an example. PRESENTATION DETAILS Making a game is simp
le\, right? How about adding physics to it? What if we ran it in the bro
wser and made it a real-time multiplayer? I think you can see that very
quickly what was once a straightforward challenge has ballooned into a m
uch more significant undertaking. The browser is not a particularly frie
ndly environment for multiplayer games\, especially those that need to b
e responsive and real-time. This presentation will walk us through core
challenges that every developer will face when trying to make an in-brow
ser game and how they can overcome them. Josh will highlight key concept
s and solutions using a game he recently built in Node and React as an e
xample\, PlinkoJS. The following topics will be covered: • Games in the
 browser - The building blocks for a local\, in-browser game• Network arc
hitecture - Connecting players over the internet• State synchronization
 - Creating and maintaining an authoritative game state• Optimizations -
Reducing bandwidth and latency estimation SPEAKER DETAILS Josh Nelson is
a software engineer with a management background from Portland State Un
iversity. He has experience working with technologies such as React\, No
de\, Rails\, Backbone\, and more. He enjoys tackling challenging problem
s and working with others to build robust systems. • PlinkoJS: www.plink
 ojs.com• GitHub: https://github.com/joshcnelson EVENT DETAILS Food\, dr
inks\, and conversation beginning at 6:30. The talk begins around 7:00.
Paid parking is available in the lot directly across the street from the
Connective DX office on Pettygrove. On-street parking is available in t
he neighborhood as well\, of course\, if you can find it. There are also
bike racks available just inside the entrance to the building.\n\nTags:
