ate the importance of usability on World Usability Day on Wednesday\, No
 v. 10th. To match Portland’s unique flavor\, we have developed a unique
urban challenge: The PDX UX Scavenger Hunt. With the theme of communicat

 hat works\, what doesn’t\, and why in the world around us.&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nThis event is open to everyone in the world. It's not Portland-specifi
c at all.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTeams will have from 12:01 am on Wednesday\, No
 v. 10th until 4 pm on Thursday\, Nov. 11th to hunt for a list of communi
cation-themed items. Teams will photograph each of their finds and then
upload the pictures to a website so entries can be viewed in real-time.
Teams can work together in their own neighborhood to allow hunting as ti
me permits during the day.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nStart forming your team today!
Prizes will be awarded at the no-host prize ceremony at 7 pm Thursday\,

DESCRIPTION:IxDA Portland is delighted to welcome Jared Spool to the Paci
fic Northwest\, to present his UX Tipping Point talk. Doors open at 6pm
 for drinks\, snacks\, catching-up with friends\, and checking-out Wacom'
s swanky new &quot\;Experience Center&quot\; in the Pearl District. Jare
d's talk will then span ~45min\, with time after for Q&amp\;A. We'll als
 o be raffling-off books\, and offering a discount code for UIE's upcomin
g Portland workshop series!&#13\;\n&#13\;\n———&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe UX Tip
ping Point&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFor the longest time\, making a great experien
ce for the user was a business-strategy luxury item. A great product onl
y had to work and ship. A great experience was a nice-to-have\, not a re
quirement. Times have changed. The cost of delivering a product is no lo
nger a barrier to entry. Quality is no longer a differentiator. What’s l
eft? The user’s experience.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nEvery part of the organizatio
n must be infused with an understanding of great design. Your organizati
on has to cross the UX Tipping Point. You must increase everyone’s expos
ure to users\, communicate a solid experience vision\, and install a cul
ture of continual learning. With that\, design will become your organiza
tion’s competitive advantage.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJared will show you and you
r team:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n• Which path organizations take to become design-
infused &#13\;\n• How a centralized UX team is a stepping stone to a mor
e UX capable organization &#13\;\n• Why the market needs to demand a bet
ter experience before it will matter &#13\;\n• What your organization wi
ll need to do to cross the UX Tipping Point&#13\;\n&#13\;\n————&#13\;\n&
#13\;\nJared M. Spool is a co-founder of Center Centre and the founder o
f UIE. In 2016\, with Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman\, he opened Center Centre\
, a new design school in Chattanooga\, TN to create the next generation
of industry-ready UX Designers. They created a revolutionary approach to
vocational training\, infusing Jared’s decades of UX experience with Le
 slie’s mastery of experience-based learning methodologies.&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nYou’ll also find him as the conference chair and keynote speaker at th
e annual UI Conference and UX Immersion Conference\, and he manages to s
queeze in a fair amount of writing time. He is author of the book\, Web
Usability: A Designer’s Guide and co-author of Web Anatomy: Interaction
Design Frameworks that Work.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nYou’ll find his writing at u

DESCRIPTION:Plain Language is important for content creators\, but it app
lies to UXers and developers\, as well. At first glance\, Plain Language
is about making content more accessible to people with traumatic brain
injury\, cognitive impairments\, dyslexia\, etc. But Plain Language is a
bout more than reaching people with medical disabilities.  Plain Languag
e is about getting your message through to people who aren’t good reader
s\, people who need glasses but don’t have them for a variety of reasons
\, rushed readers who are skimming content on their mobile phones\, etc.
Committing to Plain Language means you are writing so that everybody ha
s a fighting chance!  Tonight we are joined remotely by national speaker
\, Whitney Quesenbery\, and in person with Portland expert\, Katney Bair
\, as they share their expertise. Join us and learn techniques for how t
 o clarify your writing!  Lineup/Agenda:  • 6:00 gather/networking • 6:30
presentation begins • Katney will start us off by looking at what is Pl
ain Language\, exploring the business side and the numbers. • Whitney wi
ll share her experience including usability testing with Plain Language.
   • 8:00 presentations wrap-up\, time for Q&amp\;A and conversation • 8-
 8:30 closing/networking Katney Bair &#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nKatney is t
he principal consultant at Pretty Plain\, a communications company speci
alizing in public information. Pretty Plain's communication services com
bine copywriting\, graphic design and project management. Clients includ

mall businesses\, public schools\, universities and non-profit organizat
ions. Katney’s deep experience in all areas of marketing and communicati
ons\, along with her Plain Writing expertise\, help her craft clear mess
aging that effectively reaches different groups across different platfor
ms.  Whitney Quesenbery Whitney has written three books - A Web for Eve
ryone\, Storytelling for User Experience\, and Global UX - to help pract
itioners keep users in mind throughout the creative process.  Whitney’s
work in Plain Language started with the guide to the first LaserJet 4 an
d has continued through projects at organizations like the National Canc
er Institute and The Open University in the UK. Now\, most of her work a
ims to help voters understand how to participate in democracy from optio

to understand is a civil right! CrowdCompass is our event host\, review

DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll practice using design thin
king methods to empathize with a wider group of users\, and develop solu
tions that work better for everyone. Universal design is an approach whe
re a primary requirement of any design is that all its users can access
it\, regardless of any physical or cognitive impairment they may have. I
t's also known as 'inclusive' or 'accessible' design. We’ll start with a
short overview of how universal design can combined with design thinkin
g to quickly deliver valuable insights during the design process. This w
ill be an easy\, fun\, and very interactive introduction to combining un
iversal design and design thinking methods! Light refreshments will be p
rovided. Portland Community Design Thinkers and Portland Accessibility a
nd User Experience are excited to partner to bring you this meetup. This
event will be limited to 40 participants - if your plans change\, pleas
e update your RSVP. We look forward to having you join us in our first m

DESCRIPTION:More and more UX designers are looking to inclusive design so
lutions as the foundation for their accessibility strategy. A ubiquitous
screen UI component is the form. Yet\, far too often\, using forms is a
frustrating experience\, for users at any point on the ability spectrum
. Join us for an in-depth look at form design to help you better underst
and the issues with forms in general\, and the extra hurdles they repres
ent when examined from an accessibility viewpoint. Our guest speaker\, G
 erry Gaffney\, leads Information &amp\; Design\, a usability consultancy

DESCRIPTION:Apparently\, you can download inner peace. There are countles
s applications that can put meditation in the palm of your hand\, and al
low a guru to live in your pocket. How is the technology that is suppose
d to balance us throwing the rest of our life into imbalance?&#13\;\n&#1
3\;\nEnter mindfulness. A tenet of Eastern philosophies for centuries\,
now it’s a comprehensive inclusion in the therapeutic arsenals of therap
 ist’s\, psychologist’s\, and psychiatrist’s toolkits.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nUsi
ng mindfulness allows for awareness of the present moment through attent
ion and non-judgement. But now\, mindfulness can be used as an accommoda
tion. This talk will show how people with disabilities fuse with technol
ogy and vice versa. This can be done as a great boon for a person’s ment
al health and wellness. Mindfulness is essentially vigilance before acti
ng. It prevents against impulsive actions\, and is a discipline of thoug
ht. It’s like taking that extra step before you buy junk food at grocery
store while you’re hungry and asking\, do I need this? But being mindfu
l in technology design means a focus on the design that works for the pe
rson in the moment. Our presentation will focus on how accessible design
can accommodate mental health disabilities. Instead of impulsively choo
sing accommodating or try to fit a square peg in a round hole\, it’s cha
nging a way of thought. This presentation will be focused around user em
powerment\, but also be a call to action for developers. Through case st
udies that we will present with actual data and use feedback\, we’ll arg
ue that being aware is crucial for technology\, especially accessibility
.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout Sharon Rosenblatt Sharon Rosenblatt is an accessi
bility professional working to improve the overall experience by a user
with disabilities. She has been a part of the Accessibility Partners tea
m for the over eight years\, and specializes in document remediation and
web compliance testing. Her efforts have enabled developers and manufac
turers to see the tremendous potential that accessibility has not just f
or users with disabilities\, but of all abilities.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nShe is

DESCRIPTION:CHIFOO presents: Researching Smart + Spatial Computing with H
annah Scurfield! Understanding how humans will react and engage with new
and emerging platforms can be challenging\, particularly with smart and
spatial computing. These types of experiences often depart from existin
g mental models of human-machine interaction and are often tricky to pro
totype. Traditional behavioral research methods often become less effect
ive\, meaning researchers need to experiment with new ways to gather lea
rning. Using examples from research into mixed and augmented reality exp
eriences\, we will explore these hurdles and discuss techniques for gath
ering insights when existing research methods prove inadequate. Join thi
s session to hear about experimenting with user experience design resear
ch techniques and how people interact with augmented and mixed reality e
xperiences. About the Speaker Hannah drives technology innovation by res
earching people\, behaviors and culture. She works with design\, develop
ment\, product and business teams to help build products and experiences
that people love. She has nearly 18 years’ experience in both research
and design roles in the technology industry and an exciting 14 years spe

DESCRIPTION:In May\, IDEO.org and +Acumen will once again be offering the
ir highly regarded free 9-week online course\, Design Kit: Course for Hu
man-Centered Design. As we do regularly\, Portland Community Design Thin
kers will be hosting a special meetup on May 6\, where we'll explain wha
t the course is about and what you can expect from it. And for those int
erested in participating\, we'll help you form teams of local colleagues
with whom you can work\, which we've found vastly improves both complet
ion rates and the experience as a whole. Created by IDEO.org for those w
ho are relatively new to design thinking\, +Acumen's free Design Kit: Co
urse for Human-Centered Design is probably one of the best and most imme
rsive resources anywhere for getting up to speed on the nuts and bolts o
f HCD. This meetup is specifically for those interested in learning more
about the course and helping to form working teams. Please note PCDT is
*not* managing this course -- you'll be on your own for that. But we're
keen to give anyone interested a leg up in getting off to the best poss
ible start with a group of other eager local participants\, and you're w
elcome to use our own Slack channel for course communication and organiz
ing\, as many groups have previously done. Read more about the course at
the below link. In brief\, it's a nine-week online FREE curriculum that
will introduce participants to the concepts of human-centered design an
d how this approach can be used to create innovative\, effective\, and s
ustainable solutions. During those nine weeks\, you'll work online (and
off) with a group of 2-6 people\, learning the HCD process by applying i
t to one of three pre-crafted real world design challenges. (You'll also
have a choice to craft your own challenge.) Each week you will explore
the fundamental concepts through readings\, case studies\, and short vid
eos. Then you'll meet in-person with your design team to get your hands
dirty practicing the relevant human-centered design methods. Let's get a
s many teams together as we can for the next course! Read more at this l

DESCRIPTION:In January\, Portland Community Design Thinkers gathered to e
xamine how mobile devices and apps are designed to hijack our attention
in ways that are not aligned with users’ best interests but\, rather\, m
ainly with the interests of advertisers. In that session\, we explored h
ow “engagement\,” the chief currency of Silicon Valley\, has become inex
tricably linked with the hidden design practices that prioritize user ti
me on platform above all other considerations. Managing our own ability
to ignore these digital distractions is difficult enough\; but it become
s vastly more difficult when we must do so for our children as well\, wh
o are growing up in a world in which these device mediate nearly every a
spect of their social\, psychological (and\, increasingly\, their educat
ional) lives. How do parents and families take back control of their hom
es -- and their children's futures -- from the Silicon Valley tech giant
s whose primary concern is maximizing &quot\;time on platform&quot\; and
delivering users' eyeballs to advertisers? There is so much at stake. C
 yber bullying\, inappropriate texts\, social anxiety\, depression\, ubiq
uitous porn\, and screen addictions are just a few of the issues that mi
ght affect our children. There are certainly benefits to using mobile de
vices. But how can parents and young children assure they remain the mas
ters of these devices rather than servants to them? How do parents assur
e they are leading by example to create tech-healthy families? On May 21
\, we'll reconvene to consider just these questions. We'll be joined by
two Portland subject matter experts\, both of whom provide counseling\,
workshops and proven strategies for parents to help children manage scre
en time and find balance in the digital age. Richard Halpern is a Portla
nd-based Parent Educator and Counselor\, and the founder of Coach4Parent
s\, providing workshops and parenting strategy sessions to help manage s
creen time\, and to reduce screen dependence\, for kids of all ages. And
rea Davis and her husband\, Tyler\, are the parents of five kids. Togeth
er\, they've created BetterScreenTime\, a resource for any parent who be
lieves screen time can be a positive experience and who wants to prepare
their children for that privilege in the best way possible. It’s for th
e parent who knows screen time will never be perfect\, but believes it c
an be better. Join us on May 21 for an interactive discussion. As always
\, we'll have food and drink on hand from our sponsor\, LUMA Institute\,
some door prize giveaways\, and some networking and socializing time pr
ior to and after the presentation.\n\nTags: meetup:event=260858452\, mee

DESCRIPTION:Curious about what's happening in the digital accessibility l
egal space? Wonder why accessibility is even a legal issue to begin with
? Lainey Feingold will bring us up-to-date about accessibility as a civi
l right and how advocates are using the law in the United States to adva
nce disability inclusion by eliminating digital barriers. Come learn abo
ut pending accessibility lawsuits\, what courts say about digital access
ibility\, and what strategies are available to advocates besides the con
frontation and expense of a lawsuit. We'll also talk about the importanc
e of avoiding fear when thinking about the law and what to expect from t
he Biden/Harris administration in the digital accessibility legal space.

DESCRIPTION:When loading a web page\, a sighted page visitor can take in
almost all information at a glance and home in on what they want to expl
ore — a whole-to-part approach. A blind screen reader user\, on the othe
r hand\, must reverse the process and gather bits of information through
page exploration to create the full picture — a part-to-whole approach.
If sighted design stakeholders are not mindful of the differences in th
ese strategies\, they may disregard helpful bits of information that all
ow the most efficient exploration and understanding for blind visitors.
Using parallels from pedestrian navigation such as the importance of “la
ndmarks” and “boundaries\,” our presenter Dr. Michele A. Williams will h
elp create common ground between sighted and blind communities to ensure
blind screen reader users are best accommodated in Web and other digita

with sister Meetup groups around the world. Our goal is to make this the
largest Meetup on accessibility and inclusive design!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTA

ey will have an exciting announcement to make. We then will turn to our
 speakers. We have three confirmed now\, with more to come.&#13\;\n&#13\;
 \nTerri Rodriguez-Hong recently published &quot\;What it's like having a
hidden disability in Silicon Valley&quot\; in Fast Company. She'll join
us to reflect on the article and to have a discussion about her journey
. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nDeque System's Carie Fisher will present The Future of
Accessibility is a &quot\;Choose Your Own Adventure&quot\; Book. The qu
estion Carie will address is: do designers and developers really think t
hey can build an accessible experience for all - even though there are e
ndless combinations of browsers\, ATs\, settings\, and user preferences?
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOur other confirmed speaker is Marc B.D. Greenberg. Robo
ts are entering the public space and our lives more and more. In one for
 m or another—from Roomba to Aibo and home\, sidewalk\, and in-store robo
ts—they are getting designed and released into our lives and spaces. Wha
t accessibility considerations should be made and how can we get in fron
t of that?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAGENDA:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n(subject to tweaking as
  May 20 grows near!)&#13\;\n&#13\;\n* 4:30 – 4:45 pm PT – Welcome from A

  7:30–7:45pm Wrap up&#13\;\n&#13\;\n#### About the presenter&#13\;\n&#13
\;\nYan's family knew from an early age that he was neurodiverse. As suc

. A couple of years after college\, he launched a UX agency in India and
lived there for nine years. While in India\, Yan learned Hindi and Indi
an culture\, teaching him firsthand the impact of different perspectives
. Also in India\, he met his wife\, an Iranian expat studying as a pharm
acist. After marriage\, Yan moved back to the US\, where he pursued a ca
reer specific to user research. In the last few years\, Yan has been par
ticularly interested in the impact of AI on the future of user research
work (and vice versa). Last year\, he started speaking publicly about th

DESCRIPTION:#### Topic&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Our coaching practice blends the s
harp eye of an engineer with the steady guidance of a mentor. We work di
rectly with development teams to level up their accessibility maturity—t
eaching not just the how of accessible code\, but the why of inclusive d
esign. Coaches serve as half engineer\, half strategist: diving into cod
e reviews\, walking through practical fixes\, and helping teams adopt su
stainable practices. The goal isn’t just compliance—it’s building teams
that confidently deliver accessible products\, sprint after sprint\, unt

roving that sometimes the most impactful code is measured in lines\, not
libraries. We'll dive deep into practical\, copy-paste-ready CSS soluti
ons that require minimal implementation time but deliver maximum inclusi

 presenter&#13\;\n&#13\;\n[Mike Mai](https://mikemai.net/) is an expert i
n design systems\, web accessibility\, HTML/CSS\, and typography. His de
sign philosophy is rooted in a fundamental understanding of the web. Mik
e's passion for typography\, cultivated during my BFA in Graphic Design
at Massachusetts College of Art and Design\, directly informed my decisi
on to pursue web design professionally. He considers typography to be th
e most critical foundation of any website\, given its text-centric natur
e\, making typeface selection and typesetting my first order of business
on any new projects.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMike firmly believes that design is
about solving problems\, a principle instilled by a formative mentor. T
his conviction drove his path to specializing in accessible web design.
While strong typographic forms are important\, they must be balanced wit
h robust function and an intuitive user experience. He is committed to e
 nsuring all his designs are usable\, useful\, and truly inclusive.&#13\;

DESCRIPTION:#### Topic&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOften relegated to episodic efforts
such as late-stage audits and ad hoc projects\, digital accessibility i
s most effective and efficient when it is the organization’s default mod
e of operation. Making the shift to continuous accessibility leads to be
tter outcomes across the board\, including improving the experience of d
isabled users\, mitigating the risk of accessibility-related lawsuits\,
improving brand reputation\, and even creating a positive return on inve
stment (ROI).&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this talk we provide practical strategie
s for embedding accessibility into daily routines and technical systems\
, demonstrating how to start small and scale over time. Key topics inclu
de:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n* Establishing a repeatable accessibility routine and
improving it over time.&#13\;\n* The importance of data and metrics\, s
uch as bug counts and time-to-resolution (TTR)\, to establish a baseline
and measure progress.&#13\;\n* Rallying cross-functional allies to driv
 e change (yes\, even without C-suite mandates).&#13\;\n* Creating a unif
ied system where human workflows and technical tools work in concert.&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\nA real world case study illustrates how the strategic appli
cation of automated regression testing and clear bug prioritization led
to a profound cultural shift where accessibility is treated like any oth
er product quality concern. Attendees will leave with actionable ideas f
or initiating and sustaining cultural change\, making the case for acces
 sibility as a core business principle.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n#### Agenda&#13\;\

tech as an accessibility professional around 2012\, she worked in &quot\
 ;small&quot\; tech as a UI designer\, front-end web developer\, and usab

he has an MS in Information and is disabled\, chronically ill\, and neur

. Her current focus as a solo consultant is on helping people do accessi

th that goal in mind.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPortlander by birth and by choice\,
[Andrew Hedges](https://andrew.hedges.name/) is COO for Assistiv Labs\,

DESCRIPTION:#### Topic&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWriting proper alt text is hard. Bu
t it doesn't have to be. There's a minimum standard and an advanced appr
oach. People who need alt text will appreciate you for the former and lo
ve you for the latter. Alt text is also a whole lot more than the `alt`
attribute. That's just one of the many ways to make content accessible.
In fact\, there are a number of considerations for writing great alt tex
t.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this presentation\, Mark Wyner will help you unders
tand the spectrum of options so you can take good care of your audience.
  We'll walk through implementation methods\, phonetics\, composition\, c
