DESCRIPTION:Linux has powerful block device mapping capabilities that are
used by tools such as LVM. Froyo is a new tool that uses these capabili

DESCRIPTION:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThere will be 2 talks this month!&#13\;\n&#13
\;\nRustdoc for Everyone:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nYou don't have to be a great wr
iter to create great documentation. There are simple techniques and rule
s you can follow to build documentation for your users. Rust ships with
documentation tools\, but not all crates take advantage of them. Documen
tation is the first way that developers interact with your code - great
documentation sets your crates apart\, helps users skip easy questions\,
and cuts down on bug reports. In this talk\, we will explore techniques
for writing great documentation.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker Jeremiah Peschk
a has been breaking software since 2000 - he's been told this sounds imp
ressive\, but he thinks it might just make him feel old. He blogs over a
t http://facility9.com and can be found on twitter and IRC as peschkaj.
When Jeremiah isn't working with databases and Rust\, he can be found pl
aying video games\, hanging out at food trucks\, or napping at home.&#13
 \;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBridging Ruby and Rust:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRuby is not t
he fastest language in the world\, there is no doubt about it. This does
n't turn out to matter all that much – Ruby and its ecosystem has so muc
h to offer\, making it a worthwhile tradeoff a lot of the times.&#13\;\n
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHowever\, you might occasionally encounter workloads tha
t are simply not suitable for Ruby. This is especially true for framewor
ks like Rails\, where the overhead wants to be as little as possible.&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this talk\, we will explore building a native Ru
by extension with Rust to speed up parts of Rails. What does Rust have t
o offer here over plain-old C? What kind of challenges would you run int
o when briding a dynamic langauge like Ruby with Rust? Let's find out!&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker Godfrey Chan is a member of the Rails core team an
d a co-author of Helix\, a toolkit for implementing Ruby classes in Rust
. He works at Tilde Inc\, splitting his time between building Skylight a
 nd open-source consulting.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOther Information:&#13\;\n&#13

DESCRIPTION:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe'll have 2 talks again this month!&#13\;\n&
#13\;\nDesign Patterns in Rust:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nNick Cameron is a core co
ntributor on the Rust language's language design\, tools\, and compiler
teams. He's in town for RustConf\, and will be sharing his talk on Desig
n Patterns in Rust with us! Here's the abstract:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis tal
k will cover some of the common idioms and design patterns encountered w
hen programming in Rust. We’ll work through simple idioms used in everyda
y programming for tasks such as object creation and customisation\, reso
urce management\, and destruction. We’ll then cover more complex pattern
s often used in generic data structures and libraries. We’ll also discus
s some of the underlying themes and why these idioms and patterns occur
in Rust.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe talk will not assume previous experience wit
h Rust. The audience will gain an understanding of programming with Rust
and its strengths and weaknesses. For those learning (or intending to l
earn) Rust\, the talk should provide a short-cut to intermediate and adv
 anced programming skills.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nCorrode: Automatically Translat
ing C to Rust&#13\;\n&#13\;\nC has been the de facto systems programming
language for 44 years\, which means an awful lot of useful software is
written in that language. As excellent as Rust is\, it doesn't have that
inertia behind it. (Yet!) Rust has good FFI support for calling C funct
ions\, plus tools for automatically generating FFI bindings\, which make
much of that existing software usable for new Rust projects. Still\, ga
ining Rust's full safety advantages requires rewriting existing C softwa
 re in Rust\, which is currently a manual\, time-consuming\, and error-pr
one process.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nCorrode is a tool that aims to bridge this g
ap by automatically translating C source code to equivalent Rust. A Corr
ode-translated program is no safer than the original C was\, but it gets
the most tedious translation work out of the way so a programmer can fo
cus on taking advantage of Rust's more advanced features.&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nIn this talk we'll explore what Corrode does\, and does not\, do. We'll
discuss interesting examples that will surprise most C programmers\, wh
ile staying accessible to programmers in any language. We'll look at how
Corrode has been tested: the most effective ways are methods not widely
used with other software. And we'll evaluate Corrode's documentation an
d community-building efforts\, to both show how you can contribute and s
uggest steps you might consider for your own projects.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSp
eaker Jamey Sharp is Corrode's initial author and a programmer experienc
 ed in a variety of languages including C\, Java\, Python\, Haskell\, and
x86 assembly. He is new to Rust\, compared to those languages\, and Cor
rode grew out of his learning experiments. (The exercise has been very e
ffective at finding odd corners of both C and Rust...) He recently compl
eted a session as a Recurse Center resident\, teaching advanced topics t
o diverse audiences of programming enthusiasts spanning every skill leve
 l\, which he enjoyed tremendously.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOther information:&#13

DESCRIPTION:This month\, Shea Newton will be presenting &quot\;Writing So

software\, and most of the microcontrollers in today's cars are programm

self-corrupting code may resonate more with developers who have written
C but ideally the talk will apply to anyone interested in Rust and curio

DESCRIPTION:[Rescheduled after snow day]&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHow many pages ar
e reachable from Wikipedia's page on the Rust programming language in tw
o hops? Around 30\,000\, it turns out\, including pages on wheat flour\,
Welsh orthography\, and the zombie apocalypse.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs it tur
ns out\, it's super easy to do this exploration using asynchronous Rust
code. Wikipedia offers a cute little REST API for querying links\, and i
t's easy to use Serde to generate requests and parse replies. And if you
're feeling guilty about flooding a precious public resource with silly
API requests\, it's also super easy to do rate limiting.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Jim Blandy will show how to wire up Tokio\, Reqwest\, and Serde to do th
e spidering\, and whip up a mock server for testing using Warp. The tech
niques shown work nicely for all kinds of REST API scripting\, including
 \, say\, GitHub.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n\n\nTags: programming languages\, rust\,

DESCRIPTION:An object-relational mapping (ORM) is a layer that lets you w
ork with a database using native types instead of writing queries direct
ly. In Rust terms\, an ORM maps tables to structs\, rows to struct insta
 nces\, and columns to fields\, handling serialization\, deserialization\
, and query construction for you.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nToasty is an experiment
al new ORM for Rust that prioritizes ease of use. It supports both SQL d
atabases as well as some NoSQL databases\, including DynamoDB and Cassan
dra. Rather than hiding the database's capabilities\, Toasty exposes fea
tures based on the target database.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nCarl Lerche\, Toasty'
s designer\, is also the original designer of the Tokio asynchronous run
 time library.&#13\;\n\n\nTags: programming languages\, rust\, computer p

DESCRIPTION:An artist might paint their parent a picture\, a sculptor may
craft them a vase\, but a programmer writes them an x11 window manager.
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFor Christmas of 2025\, Ben Massey started on a project
for his dad: an x11 window manager written in Rust. Development workflow
is an important part of a programmer's life: we use these computer thin
gs quite a bit every single day\, so basic usage of them should aid the
creative process\, rather than fight it. After some discussions on the t
opic of workflow\, Ben decided that there were some needs not met by tra
ditional window managers\, and that it was worth taking a stab at a solu
tion.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis talk will go over the project &quot\;pick-full
-wm&quot\;\, which takes full advantage of the wonderful tooling offered
to Rust like Cargo\, and the niceties of aspects like memory safety and
compiler rule enforcement. This will also naturally lead to topics of R
ust bindings to C\, and more general discussions of Linux and software d
 evelopment.\n\nTags: programming languages\, rust\, computer programming
