to eliminate potential areas of overlap and friction. A Q&amp\;A session
will follow allowing the audience to clarify points or share additional
thoughts on this important topic.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAttending this event w

DESCRIPTION:The Oregon chapter of the Product Development and Management
Association (PDMA) invites you to its first 2010 Learning and Networking
Event\; &quot\;Proven Techniques Turning Customer Requirements into Suc
cessful Products! Using 'Voice of the Customer' processes to develop pro
ducts that meet REAL market needs.&quot\;&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA major compone
nt of business success is developing products that meet customer needs a
nd provide superior value. Meeting customer needs requires that those ne
eds be understood. The &quot\;voice of the customer&quot\; (VOC) is the
term to describe the stated and unstated customer needs or requirements.
The voice of the customer can be captured in a variety of ways: direct
discussion or interviews\, surveys\, focus groups\, customer specificati
 ons\, observation\, warranty data\, field reports\, etc.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
This program will explore the practical side of collecting and using the
VOC. Frank Binnendyk\, and expert in VOC and a founder partner of Custo
mer Alignment Consulting will explain the basics of this market research
methodology. Then\, three representatives from companies that have used
the VOC research will provide a users' perspective. They will explain w
hy and how they did it\; how they used the information gathered\; if it
worked well or didn't meet their expectations and what were their VOC le
ssons learned. Ed de la Fuente VP of Marketing from Aperion Audio\, John
Williams Product Marketing Manager from FEI and Robert Buxton a High Te
ch B2B Professional will present company examples. The contrast between
these types of companies will provide insights into how a VOC program ca
n be scaled and adapted to meet the needs and resources of any company.&

DESCRIPTION:Product Development and Management Association Learning and N
etworking Event&#13\;\n &#13\;\nMost new products fail even though reall
y smart people work hard to make them successful. Why is that? The journ
ey from a glimmer of a new idea to a commercially winning product is lon
g and arduous\, with many steps and decisions along the way. This event
will identify the most common causes of new product failure and propose
action to avoid those problems in the future. The discussion will range
from the fuzzy front end to sales support and from individual to team to
market challenges.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nTwo of the most experienced Product
Managers in Portland\, with combined new product experience of over 50 y
ears\, will illustrate the causes of failure with real-world examples.
Audience members will have time to pose questions\, offer comments and e
xchange ideas on this important and challenging topic. &#13\;\n &#13\;\
nEveryone involved in product planning and product development from eith
er the engineering or marketing side will benefit. The causes that will
be explained apply to start-up companies as well as large\, established
corporations. By attending\, you’ll be able to go back to your product d
evelopment activities and quickly assess if you’re at risk of becoming a
victim of one or several of these all too common pitfalls.&#13\;\n &#13

DESCRIPTION:Everyone designs. Business people have focused on designing o
rganizations to reliably generate profits. Today’s designers have focuse
d on designing products and services to be truly compelling to customers
. What is most compelling to customers though\, is often not rational or
logical. So designers have evolved effective and efficient trial-and-er
ror approaches that recognize and accommodate rational and non-rational
factors. When these heuristics have been applied to strategy and busines
s modeling\, it has produced businesses such as the Apple’s iTunes and i
Pod ecosystem. Design Thinking balances left brain and right brain decis
ion-making\, and when applied to strategy work often creates bigger win-
wins for companies and their customers\, than achievable through convent
ional thinking.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this short experiential workshop\, bas
ed on techniques used at HP\, we will provide a brief introduction to th
e key concepts\, break up into small teams and step through a facilitate
d Design Thinking exercise. At the end of the session\, we will regroup
to learn from each team’s experience with the process.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTh
e Design Thinking approach is collaborative\, interdisciplinary and high
ly relevant to anyone involved in the development of new products and se
rvices: product managers\, engineers\, designers\, and marketers. The ob
jective of this workshop is to provide you with the foundations of Desig
 n Thinking and launch your on-going learning on the topic.&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nDue to the interactive nature of the exercise\, we’ll have to limit th

DESCRIPTION:While the need to understand the customer’s requirements is w
idely acknowledged\, too many development efforts suffer from problems w
ith the requirements. A common mistake includes capturing what the custo
mer asks for at a high level\, without really understanding the customer
need and use model for the product. Many product failures can be attrib
uted to not having a full understanding of what creates value for the cu
stomer. Fully understanding what customers value will make the product d
evelopment process more productive and increase the likelihood of custom
er success and satisfaction.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe Oregon Chapter of the Pr

DESCRIPTION:## March PDMA Learning and Networking Event&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf
your development has started to embrace Agile methods\, you’ll quickly
notice the team is acting strangely. All of a sudden an MRD becomes a “b
acklog”\, software releases become “sprints”\, requirements become “user
stories” and new languages such as “estimating poker” and “fist to five
” start creeping into meetings.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA successful transition a
lso requires that Product Management behaves differently to leverage the
benefits of Agile. During this transition\, Product Management can eit
her become the hero that helps Agile to shine as a serious business tool
\, or a villain that drives Agile deep into the dark corners of developm
ent. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe’ll discuss some of the following specific challe
nges the Product Managers often experience in this transition among othe
rs:&#13\;\n- Converting visions to backlogs&#13\;\n- Driving and reporti
ng roadmaps in Agile&#13\;\n- Working with Product Owners… or being a Pr

&#13\;\nThe Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Ass

At this event\, experienced professionals will share their experiences
with transitions to Agile and offer specific tactics to make your transi

ith Google\, Apple\, and Facebook? They are all high growth companies th
at saw into the future and took advantage of huge enabling waves of chan
ge in the marketplace when they were just ripples. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nPleas
e join us for an interactive discussion to examine not only the top enab
ling waves that our speakers have identified\, but also offer you a fram
ework and tools to not just see the future\, but to create the future wi
th confidence.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSome of the waves we’ll examine that are s
ure to be major elements of future product and services include:&#13\;\n
 &#13\;\nBIG DATA&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHaptics&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAugmented reality
 &#13\;\n&#13\;\nSocial networking&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSensing&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
And more… &#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe’ll then offer specific tools you can use to
develop a strategy and plan for what do DO about the waves. &#13\;\n&#1
3\;\nThis session will be interactive in nature. In addition to presenti
ng researched results\, we’ll draw on the insights and opinions of the a
udience during a Q&amp\;A session to add greater depth and different per
spectives to the findings.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA special thanks to the Oregon
  Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.&#13\;\n&#13\;

DESCRIPTION:This event runs from Thursday\, July 20\, 2017 at 9am through
  Friday\, July 21\, 2017 at 6pm.\n\nDescription:\nProfessional Scrum Pro
duct Owner (PSPO) is a 2-day course that provides the knowledge needed t
o work with Scrum in a highly practical way. The course is a combination
of instruction and team-based exercises where students experience how t
he Scrum framework improves product development efforts.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Over the 2 days\, students will develop and solidify their knowledge of
being a Product Owner through instruction and team-based exercises. The
breadth of the role’s responsibilities in delivering a successful produc
t will become more clear from an Agile perspective. Metrics are identifi
ed to track the creation of value and the successful delivery of the pro
duct to the marketplace.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nScrum.org selects only the most
qualified instructors to deliver this course. Each instructor lends his
or her individual experience and expertise to the course\, but all stude
nts learn the same core content. This improves their ability to pass the

cience for Product ManagersJahed Momand\, Head of Product Management at
Conversa Health The talk of the town in theories of behavior change in t
echnology center on centuries old behaviorism\, such as BJ Fogg's Behavi
or Model or Nir Eyal's Hook Model. But\, what if you're trying to precip
itate a user behavior that's complex? That happens over long time domain
s? That isn't immediately rewardable? How do you support users in findin
g the motivation to interact with your product\, when push notifications
just won't do the trick? I'll talk about how we applied the science of
 motivation\, Edward Deci's self-determination theory\, to product design
at Conversa Health\, for outsized gains in patient engagement\, retenti
on\, and NPS. Jahed heads up the product team at Conversa Health\, an au
tomated care management chatbot for health systems\, leading them to suc
cessful A and B rounds of funding during his tenure. Before\, he led the
product growth team at Zoomcare\, where he increased revenue and visits
240% over 18 rapid fire months\, leading up to their acquisition by Pea
ce Health. Before that he worked with Dan Ariely of Predictably Irration
al fame on applying behavioral economics to projects within Google\, and
worked in the adtech industry applying behavioral science to ad units (
he's not proud of this work). Way before then\, he played poker professi

DESCRIPTION:We'll have two 20-minute talks\, each followed by 10 minutes
of Q&amp\;A. We'll have plenty of time at the start and end of the meetu
p for tasty beverages and networking. --- Leveraging product principles
to drive better decision makingAmi Murthy\, Head of Product - Mobile at
eBay Classifieds Group at eBay Product principles can serve as a strong
complement to the product vision and strategy. I will share examples of
our product principles and how we have successfully used them as tools t
o drive better and faster decisions. Ami Murthy is a product leader who
is excellent at building teams that create experiences which millions of
customers LOVE and USE on a daily basis. She has experience leading div
erse\, global teams from product conceptualization to launch\, with a pr
oven track record of building scalable customer-centric products includi
 ng 5-star apps\, a multi-million dollar mobile product\, and market-lead
ing e-book solutions. She is adept at driving business results and has h
elped companies like eBay\, Intel and Amazon grow their bottom line perf
ormance. --- What can theater teach us about software deliveryDavid Van
der Merwe\, Senior Product Manager at Radar I've been thinking about the
similarities between software development and the process of producing
theater for a while. My wife runs a theater company and I'm constantly p
icking her brain about the creative process and theater production as a
project that actually has a deadline (opening night). My hope is to shar
e some learnings about this process and how it may apply to product mana
gers when we need to deliver a full solution to a customer problem by a
committed date. I'm currently a Sr. Product Manager working at RADAR bui
lding privacy incident response management solutions. Like many pm's\, I
grew into a product management role somewhat through circumstance\, som
e curiosity\, and a desire to improve customer experiences. I was born a
nd raised in South Africa and then immigrated to the US where I've worke
d in web marketing\, and e-commerce solutions that served both b2b and b
2c enterprises for the last 20 years. --- Also\, thank you to our host\,
