DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday we show 3 TED Talks on our wall sized screen or
ganized around a common theme. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis weeks theme: The Mi
 nd&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGero Miesenboeck reengineers a brain&#13\;\nIn the que
st to map the brain\, many scientists have attempted the incredibly daun
ting task of recording the activity of each neuron. Gero Miesenboeck wor
ks backward -- manipulating specific neurons to figure out exactly what
they do\, through a series of stunning experiments that reengineer the w
ay fruit flies perceive light.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDan Gilbert asks\, Why are
we happy?&#13\;\nHarvard psychologist Dan Gilbert says our beliefs abou
t what will make us happy are often wrong -- a premise he supports with
intriguing research\, and explains in his accessible and unexpectedly en
gaging talk.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nVS Ramachandran on your mind&#13\;\nVilayanu

voting results when you view the star rating of an Amazon product. Now
learn how voting really works\, how it is usually miscalculated -- inten

DESCRIPTION:###Greetings fellow Reagents!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe are looking f
orward to our first official ReactJS user group. Dave and Eric from Idea
list.org will be sharing some interesting stuff (details below) with us\
, and we're hoping to have one additional talk. Please let us know if yo
u're interested in speaking/presenting. We'd like to have at least a few
lightning talks as well. I have a feeling this will fill up fast\, so p
lease RSVP if you would like to attend this event.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf you
are new to our group\, Welcome! If you would like to get more involved
or hear what we're talking about\, we'd like to invite you to [join our
 google group](https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/portland-reactjs)
to join the conversations or start a new one. Also\, please take a look
 at our [code of conduct](https://github.com/portland-react-js/meetup/blo
b/master/code-of-conduct.md) which let's you know what we think &quot\;b
eing excellent to each other&quot\; should look and feel like.&#13\;\n&#
13\;\n##Talks: &#13\;\n###Notes on the Design of Components (Dave McCabe
)&#13\;\nDave will discuss what idealist.org has learned about designing
React components\, specifically techniques for promoting simplicity\, r
euse\, statelessness\, and separation of concerns\, and for dealing with
  asynchrony.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n###Isomorphic Webpack Hot Module Replacement
Boilerplate (Eric O'Connell)&#13\;\n- Do you want to serve fully-render
ed HTML from your React application? &#13\;\n- Do you want near-instant
feedback in your browser as soon as you edit your React components? &#13
\;\n- How about CSS? &#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis talk will give the starting po
int for a very nice dev environment using the webpack Hot Module Replace
ment feature. It will include a (trivial) Express app that renders the e
ntire React component hierarchy which will then be hydrated on the clien
 t. Variations shown will include serving API requests out of the same ap
 p\, and shared client/server routing.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n###TBD / Lightning

DESCRIPTION:“Reinventing black boxes”&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDescription:&#13\;\n
Open source has a long history of reimplementing\, and reverse engineeri
ng proprietary tools. This talk will integrate the tools needed to rever
se engineer into stories of how it has been done before. &#13\;\n&#13\;\
nAbstract:&#13\;\nThere is a constant need to provide open source glue\,
and alternatives to new technology. Learning how to analyze black boxes
frees you from having to wait for someone else to do it. When you solve
the puzzle yourself you will really understand how it works. &#13\;\n&#
13\;\nReverse engineering is a lot like debugging. There are open source
full development stacks including debugging for almost every operating
system\, and architecture. There are a few other tools you need\, but wi
th decades of reinvention the toolbox will usually have everything you n
eed. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nSince black boxes aren’t documented it’s impossible
to know for sure if you will have the skills you need ahead of time. Th
ey are puzzles which might be easy\, or hard. Chances are you won’t have
to go it alone for long as other people\, and whole communities often w
ant the same thing that you do. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nBio:&#13\;\nDaniel Johns
on is a full stack developer who has been programming since 1990\, and f
ocused on Open Source technologies since 2003. Jobs have ranged from tel
ephone tech support to systems administration\, and freelance software d
evelopment. He has spent the most time in the last few years working wit
h Rails\, AngularJS\, Android\, and Arduino. He was the first person to
document how to use the intel real sense 3d camera with Linux. &#13\;\n&

 \nPolicy Advocacy&#13\;\n&#13\;\nImagine a world with zero traffic-relat

ieve in the next 10 years with the participation of the City of Portland
\, Oregon Walks\, Bike Portland and other groups. With construction boom
ing in Portland\, one of the biggest concerns is construction closures w
hich often bring together vehicles\, bikes\, and pedestrians in unexpect

DESCRIPTION:A Hack the Dot is a two-hour hackathon where coding school st
 udents\, junior developers\, experienced developers\, marketers\, design
ers and curious web people come together to build ideas around a domain
name. Our events are meant to be a quick and fun way to build a humorous
(and functional) product quickly while meeting people in your tech/star
tup community.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThere will be pizza. And beer.&#13\;\n&#13
\;\nWhat to Bring / How to Prepare:&#13\;\n• Bring your laptop (fully ch
arged). Bring your charger just in case.&#13\;\n• Install the Atom text
 editor. Go here: https://atom.io/&#13\;\n• Setup a github.com account&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\nHow does it work?&#13\;\nStep 1: Attendees are broken up in
to random teams and assigned spirit animals to guide their efforts.&#13\
;\nStep 2: The teams are provided with the same undisclosed domain name
by Name.com\, arbitrary and often hilarious. &#13\;\nStep 3: Teams have
just two hours to come up with a functioning site inspired by that domai
 n. The team builds the most creative and fun idea for the domain wins.&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nParticipants will be judged on four criteria: (1) function
 ality\, (2) design\, (3) humor\, and (4) creative domain name interpreta
tion.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhat do you get at the event? &#13\;\nFOOD! &#13\;\
nSWAG! &#13\;\nFRIENDS!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHow much does it cost? &#13\;\nIt
’s FREE!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nQuestions? Send them to HacktheDot at name.com.\

 eo&#13\;\n&#13\;\n++++++++++++++&#13\;\n&#13\;\n[1] HOWL: 3D/4D mapping
and visualization of Oregon’s wildlands&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe HOWL (Highlig
hting Oregon's WildLands) project aims to create an interactive 3D/4D ma
pping and visualization tool for presenting spatio-temporal information
relevant to the preservation of wilderness and wildlife protection in Or
egon. HOWL will be available to conservation advocates (e.g.\, Oregon Wi
ld) and the general public\, to improve dissemination\, understanding an
d interpretation of multiple publicly available data sources. Candidate
data sets include boundaries of current and proposed wilderness areas\,
wild and scenic river areas\, national forests and other public lands\,
wildfire events\, wildlife migrations\, deforestation history\, and sate
llite imagery\, to name a few.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHOWL is a web application
being built using CesiumJS\, a powerful open source 3D mapping and visua
lization library\, which enables incorporating not only realistic terrai
n modeling\, but also volumetric symbols to build interactive 3D themati
c maps. In addition\, HOWL will leverage the temporal visualization capa
bilities of CesiumJS to add the 4th dimension\, thus enabling dynamic pl
ayback of related past and/or predicted events. Visualizations examples
include wildfire history in old growth forest areas\, wildlife migration
  records\, and deforestation chronicles.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis presentatio
n dives into details of building HOWL by leveraging open source front-en
 d components (e.g.\, CesiumJS\, jQuery\, Bootstrap)\, back-end tools (e.
 g.\, MapShaper\, toGeoJson\, TopoJSON\, node.js) and workflows for data
acquisition\, transformation\, and integration. The presentation address
es key design decisions\, technical challenges and future developments.\

 is month:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n- We'll check out &quot\;Mapping Inequality&quo
t\; [1]\, a project out of University of Richmond\, University of Maryla
nd\, Virginia Tech and John Hopkins. The project uses Leaflet and CartoD
B to display georeferenced maps and redlining data from in the late 30's
  - with a focus on redlining and abrasive\, unfiltered racist language t
hat has directly influenced the formation of neighborhoods today.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\n- We also have a very cool spatial analysis presentation from K
evin that will show how he used PostGIS\, QGIS and Geopy to calculate th
e most remote locations in Oregon and Washington\, along the lines of wh
at Project Remote [2] has been doing for the whole lower 48. Kevin's pro
ject also used Leaflet\, MapboxGL JS and Turf for visualization.&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nWe'll also cover the latest happenings in geodata\, upcoming ge
