DESCRIPTION:We've got a fun meeting coming up this Thursday. The plan is
to break into small groups to evaluate various testing frameworks (Sepcs
 \, ScalaTest\, JUnit\, etc.) and then discuss our findings as a group.&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nTrenton has graciously set up a GitHub repository with som
e basic classes to test against and a set of JUnit tests to get started
with. It's currently set up with Maven and has the beginnings of an SBT
project set up. I'm still working on getting SBT to run the JUnit tests
Trenton wrote\, but otherwise feel free to clone it and get familiar wit
 h it before the meeting:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nhttp://github.com/trenton/TestOf
Tests&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThere should also be time to discuss other concerns
\, ask questions\, and the usual sorts of things you might want to do in
a group of like-minded techies. If you have ideas for other short discu
ssions you'd like to propose for this meeting or a future meeting\, plea
 se send them along.\n\nTags: scala\, pdxscala\n\nImported from: http://c

DESCRIPTION:Come join us for another gathering of PDXScala\, the Portland
Scala users group. This is a casual group focused around the Scala prog
ramming language. We welcome both newcomers and experts alike.&#13\;\n&#
13\;\nThomas Lockney will be presenting SBT (Simple Build Tool) as a con
venient tool for exploring Java libraries with Scala. One of the primary
benefits of Scala being available on the JVM is easy integration with e
xisting Java code\, but as any Java developer can tell you\, it can take
a lot of boilerplate to get started exploring a new library. Scala (and
SBT) make it possible to shortcut through a lot of this excess code and
get right to the heart of the matter.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBrian Panulla has
generously agreed to be our first subject for a group code review. He'll
be showing his program which converts an XML file to RDF/OWL and we'll
have the opportunity\, as a group\, to look for ways to improve it.&#13\

DESCRIPTION:It's that time again! It seems to sneak up on me and if I'm n
ot careful\, I'll forget to send these notices out entirely. But fate in
tervened and I was reminded about it just now\, so... without further ad
o... I'm happy to say we have what looks to be a very interesting talk t
his month being given by Stephen Judkins. Here's the description in his
 own words:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n----&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGOTO Considered Awesome: D
elimited Continuations in Scala&#13\;\n&#13\;\nScala 2.8 adds support fo
 r delimited continuations\, a powerful control-flow abstraction. First\
, I'll show how the the impressive power offered by continuations can be
used for good or evil. I will demonstrate how they can be used to impl
ement GOTO in Scala\, then I'll show how a simple\, synchronous Scala pr
ogram can be transformed into a distributed\, asynchronous web applicati
on that could support millions of concurrent users.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nI'll
explain what a continuation actually is\, and how Scala's are &quot\;del
imited&quot\;. I'll step though the code transformations the Scala comp
iler performs in order to support continuations. I'll show the limitati
ons of Scala's continuation support and how it could be improved. Final
ly\, I'll explain how continuations are a fundamental abstraction upon w
hich many other things can be built.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n----&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
If you have other topics you'd like to discuss or just want to come hear
how others are using Scala\, please come join us. There is always plent
