DESCRIPTION:This event runs from Monday\, July 19\, 2010 at midnight thro
 ugh Friday\, July 23\, 2010 at midnight.\n\nDescription:\nIf the first y
ears of OSCON were about opening the minds of big business to the philos
ophy of open source\, are the years ahead about opening the minds of the
open source community to the possibilities of its future? As open sourc
e becomes fully integrated into the corporate environment\, OSCON helps
to define\, maintain\, and extend the identity of what it means to be op
en source.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOSCON focuses on the substance of technology\,
not the shadow\, filtering the information that most merits attention a
nd preparing participants for curves and challenges in the coming year a
nd beyond. OSCON is the place to be inspired and challenged\, renew bond
s to community\, make new connections\, and find ways to give back to th
e open source movement. OSCON has also become one of the most important
places to make open source related announcements\, and to unveil project
s and products.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOpen source is a fundamental principle at
the core of many established and emerging technologies\, driving the fu
ture of the computer industry. OSCON explores the open source technologi
es that are here to stay\, what will broaden the foundation\, and what w
ill lead the way to unexpected places and innovations.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&q
uot\;For those who have not been to OSCON\, it's a great technical confe
rence covering the whole spectrum of open source\, including Linux\, MyS
 QL\, the LAMP stack\, Perl\, Python\, Ruby on Rails\, middleware\, appli
cations\, cloud computing\, and more. OSCON always has great keynotes\,
tutorials\, and evening Birds-of-a-Feather sessions. As with many confer
ences\, a lot of the meat takes place in hallway conversations and impro
 mptu sessions.&quot\;&#13\;\n- Zack Urlocker\, InfoWorld\n\nTags: oscon\

DESCRIPTION:An Open Source company landing $5million in venture funding f
rom one of the nation's leading venture capital firms?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTh
at's a story in itself. But when you realize it's a Portland firm - Pupp
et Labs\, and that the investment was lead by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield\
, you will want to hear the story straight from the horse's mouth - CEO
Luke Kanies of Puppet Labs\, the makers of a leading open source data ce
nter automation and configuration management framework.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJ
oining him to talk about the opportunities and challenges of an open sou
rce start-up will be Stuart Cohen\, CEO of CSI (Collaborative Software I
nitiative)\, a company that introduces a process for companies to collab
oratively build software applications.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOpen Source has ty
pically been associated with altruism - software that is given away free
and is open to modification by users. The concept became a household wo
rd when Portlander Linus Torvalds developed the Linux operating system.
Now the list of Open Source and Free Software today includes cutting edg
e solutions to large scale problems in multiple domains. From languages
to runtimes\, cloud infrastructure to databases\, the best solutions are
open-sourced. Leading companies are building on top of open-source comp
onents\, while giving back to the community. But open source is not just
  about being cost-effective\,it is becoming the key to innovation.&#13\;
\n&#13\;\nHow do open source start-ups thrive in this eco-system? Come a
nd learn from the founders of two innovative start-ups!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nR

nSelf Balancing Robots 101&#13\;\nGlenn Phillips&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGlenn Ph
illips got into the computer business around the era of the Mac Plus. Gl
enn's last job was the owner of Gorge Networks Inc. a rural Internet pro
vider using fixed wireless and dsl. The business was sold in 2010 and Gl
enn has been on the Obama plan ever since.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGlenn became i
nterested in the Arduino a couple years ago\, but he had no programming
experience. At some point in the process Glenn began to control servos a
nd motors from his old RC collection. Computer control of motors was fun
\, interesting and possibly a job in the future.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSelf bal
ancing robots seemed to be the holy grail of motor control! Constant fee
dback from sensors is processed and translated to power and direction of
the motor. Any issue with any component of the system is immediately ap
parent.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGlenn is also a cheap Yankee so his creations use
salvaged parts from electric bikes\, scooters\, wheelchairs\, laser pri
nters and computers.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGlenn's presentation will cover the
basics of self balancing robots:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n\nOverview of accelerome
 ters and gyroscopes&#13\;\nControl software&#13\;\nMotor controllers&#13
\;\nBattery and electric motor selection&#13\;\nThe Church of Robotron&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nLearn about the mutant savior and our efforts to save the
last human family. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe will talk about the Chuch of Robo
tron installation at Toorcamp 2012. It involved many different types of
  materials\, skills\, and work. We used microcontrollers\, plywood\, an
d cast away junk to create a brand new immersive experience of Robotron
2084. On top of that\, we had performance\, writing\, and art to comple
te the branding of the Church. We will show what a lot of people workin
g together can accomplish.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nWe hope to inspire you to tak
 e up the two eight ways!&#13\;\n &#13\;\nOpendork&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOpendor

the data you want the way you want it. This problem remains challenging
despite 40 years of attempts to solve it. We want a reliable\, low late
ncy system that can handle varied data from wide range of data managemen
t systems. We want a solution that is easy to manage and easy to scale.
Is it too much to ask? In this presentation\, we’ll discuss the basic ch
allenges of data integration and introduce design and architecture patte
rns that are used to tackle these challenges. We will explore how these
patterns can be implemented using Apache Kafka and share pragmatic solut
ions that many engineering organizations used to build fast\, scalable a
nd manageable data pipelines. ----- Special thanks to WeWork Custom Hous

DESCRIPTION:RSVP at DAMAPDX.org for registration info for this online eve
 nt.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPresented by Daniel Lenski\, PhD&#13\;\n&#13\;\nVirtu
al private network (VPN) software creates a connection between peers acr
oss a wide-area network (normally\, the Internet!) and builds an encrypt
ed tunnel that behaves like a direct connection to the same local\, priv
ate network. VPNs have become a pervasive feature of modern workplaces\,
and even more indispensable in this era of COVID-19 and widespread remo
te work.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe most widely-deployed VPN client and server s
oftware in workplace environments — including Cisco AnyConnect\, Juniper
/Pulse Networks\, PAN GlobalProtect\, and others — is all proprietary an
d closed-source. These VPNs differ in idiosyncratic ways\, ranging from
authentication to security requirements imposed on the client computers.
Combined with bugs\, missing features\, and often mystifyingly vague er
ror reporting\, they can be very difficult to use\, especially for those
who need to access multiple VPNs. Under the hood\, however\, they all w
ork in extremely similar ways.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe speaker is one of the
main developers of OpenConnect\, an open-source VPN client which can con
nect to all of the aforementioned VPNs using a common interface (with se
veral others in development). In this talk\, he will explain in detail h
ow modern client-server VPNs work\, in terms of authentication\, encrypt
ed tunneling\, Internet protocol routing\, and client roaming. He will i
llustrate how the operation of a VPN can be reverse-engineered and reimp
lemented in OpenConnect\, using an implementation of PAN GlobalProtect a
s an example. He’ll show some of the advantages of being able to connect
to different VPNs in a consistent and automated way\, which can be part
icularly indispensable for those who work as consultants or vendors to m
ultiple companies using different VPNs. Finally\, he’ll discuss some rec
ent and ongoing developments in VPNs and other kinds of remote connectiv
 ity software&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDaniel Lenski receive
d his PhD in semiconductor physics and has worked at Seagate\, Intel\, a
nd Amazon Elemental\, and he has been using Linux and open-source softwa
re since the ’90s. He started modifying and contributing to OpenConnect
out of the necessity of interfacing with many different companies’ VPNs
while at a semiconductor consulting startup (FPS\, now part of Inficon)
and has continued developing it as a side project.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhere&

 /events/311422780/&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOpenSearch - Your Friendly Neighborhoo
d Vector Database by Nathan Boot @ AWS&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOpenSearch\, aside
from being a search\, analytics\, and observability solution\, often ge
ts overlooked as a fully functioning open source vector database. I’d ve
ry much like the opportunity to showcase the progress we’ve made here at
the OpenSearch project implementing vector database operations and maki
ng them accessible to developers of all skill levels.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nLet
’s learn how to create and query vector embeddings\, the basis for seman
tic search and RAG. You’ll get introduced to embeddings\, vectors and se
mantic search in this “OpenSearch Vector Operations for Dummies” present
ation. Hopefully it will bring a user-friendly path on a battle tested\,
fully open source platform.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nEdge Orchestration: Challeng
es and Solutions by Scott Baker @ Intel&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe edge differs
from the cloud – rather than consisting of a handful of centralized infi
nitely-elastic Kubernetes clusters\, the edge consists of thousands of g
eographically distributed edge nodes\, often with constrained resources.
The talk will begin with a discussion of the edge\, how it differs from
the cloud\, and the unique challenges that this presents. After the ove
rview of the edge\, we will discuss Intel’s Open Edge Platform and its E
dge Manageability Framework (EMF) that was built to demonstrate orchestr
ation of edge nodes\, Kubernetes Clusters\, and applications to those cl
usters. The software is fully open source\, actively developed\, and rea
dily available on GitHub.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe will discuss how we onboard
and lifecycle the nodes\, how we bring up Kubernetes clusters with our C
API-based cluster management layer\, and how we deploy and manage applic
ations to those clusters. We will introduce technologies that enable the
edge\, such as Intel’s vPRO and Edge Microvisor Toolkit (EMT). We will
talk about the architecture and design of this open-source project\, and
if time and connectivity permits\, we will do a short demo to get a fee
 l of the user interface.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAgenda&#13\;\n&#13\;\n5:30–6:00
 — Check-in\, snacks\, networking&#13\;\n6:00–6:30 — OpenSearch - Your Fr
 iendly Neighborhood Vector Database&#13\;\n6:30 - 7:00 — Edge Orchestrat
ion: Challenges and Solutions&#13\;\n7:00–8:00 — Networking (and games i
f anyone wants to bring some!)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWho Should Attend&#13\;\n&
 #13\;\nPlatform engineers\, SREs\, DevOps\, app/platform teams\, OSS mai
ntainers\, and anyone curious about Kubernetes\, supply chain security\,
  observability\, eBPF/WASM\, finops\, or AI for infra/devex.&#13\;\n\n\n
