\;\nData stream systems (DSMSs) have matured to the point that they can
be used in a large-scale industrial setting. In this talk\, I will discu
ss how a combination of a DSMS (the GS monitor) and a streaming warehous

tier-1 Internet Service Provider. The talk will emphasize the scaling c
hallenges we faced and how they were overcome.&#13\;\nBiography&#13\;\n&
#13\;\nTheodore Johnson received a B.S. in Mathematics from Johns Hopkin

DESCRIPTION:Factor is a programming language which has been in developmen
t for a little over 5 years. Factor is influenced by Forth\, Lisp\, Smal
ltalk. Factor takes the best ideas from Forth — simplicity\, short\, suc
 cint\, code\, emphasis on interactive testing\, and meta-programming. Fa
ctor also brings modern high-level language features such as garbage col
lection\, object orientation and functional programming familiar to user
s of languages such as Lisp\, Smalltalk and Python. Finally\, recognizin
g that no programming language is an island\, Factor is portable\, ships
  with a full-featured standard library\, deploys stand-alone binaries\,
and interoperates with C and Objective-C.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this talk\,
I will give the rationale for Factor’s creation\, present an overview of
the language\, and show how Factor can be used to solve real-world prob
lems with a minimum of fuss. At the same time\, I will emphasize Factor’
 s extensible syntax\, meta-programming and reflection capabilities\, and
show that these features\, which are unheard of in the world of mainstr
eam programming languages\, make programs easier to write\, more robust\
, and fun.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBiography: &#13\;\n Slava was born in the f
ormer USSR and emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 7. He moved to Ott
awa\, Canada when he was 18 to study for a Bachelors and Masters degree
in Mathematics. He now resides in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. An early ado
pter of Java\, Slava wrote the popular jEdit text editor\, then went on
to design and implement the Factor programming language. At his day job
he hacks on web apps\, optimizing compilers\, garbage collectors\, and e
verything in between&#13\;\n. &#13\;\n Galois has been holding weekly t
echnical seminars for several years on topics from functional programmin
g\, formal methods\, compiler and language design\, to cryptography\, an
d operating system construction\, with talks by many figures from the pr
ogramming language and formal methods communities.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe ta

cantly reduce stress and have interesting implications for psychology\,
medicine\, and even the semiconductor industry. Taylor has applied his s

Evolution\, and Conservation&#13\;\nThe small apes (or gibbons) are ama
zing primates living in South East Asia and currently threatened by exti
nction. They have many distinctive traits separating them from their cou
sins\, the great apes (orang\, gorilla and chimp)\, including the abilit
y to move just using their arms (i.e. brachiation)\, monogamy\, and voca
lization to defend their territory. &#13\;\nLucia Carbone\, PhD\, Assist
ant Professor at OHSU studying genomics and epigenetics\, has been study
ing the gibbon genome to learn more about these species and primate evol
ution in general. Her talk will go over her latest findings and highligh
t a fascinating connection between processes in evolution and human dise
ase.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nSpider Venoms: The Evolution of an Arsenal&#13\;\nS
piders (all 44\,000 species) play key roles in our ecosystems as predato
rs of insects. Without spiders there would be many more insects and fewe
r plants. Evolution over the last 400 million years has created enormous
diversity among spiders in predatory tactics\, including web and venom
use\, which has resulted in a phenomenal diversity of silk and venom che
 mistry.&#13\;\nGreta Binford\, PhD\, Associate Professor of Biology at L
ewis &amp\; Clark College\, studies diversity and evolution of spiders a
nd their venoms\, including the toxic brown recluse and its relatives. S
he will highlight some of the beautiful biological diversity of spiders’
feeding biology\, silks\, and venoms\, and discuss how evolution has ge
nerated a &quot\;pharmacopeia&quot\; of unique toxins that are rich in p
otential for human applications. &#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n*A note on the

fault line slips we could experience earthquakes and devastation as bad
as Japan suffered in 2011\, and coastal communities could have as few as
  20 minutes before a tsunami rushes ashore. Yes\, that’s WHEN it goes\,
not IF. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nYet it’s not all doom and gloom. Scientists and
engineers are working to prepare our communities and infrastructure to w
ithstand such devastation. Yumei Wang\, geotechnical engineer\, Geohazar
ds Team Leader from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industr

\;\nEvent Description:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThose pesky fruit flies that seem
to come out of nowhere have actually evolved a pretty sophisticated way
to stay healthy. Fruit flies are often host to parasitic wasps who lay t
heir eggs inside the flies and which\, after they hatch\, consume the fl
ies from the inside out. (Yes\, like the movie Alien.) Since fruit flies
are often around rotting\, fermenting fruits\, the flies that are infec
ted with the parasitic wasps will actively seek out otherwise harmful le
vels of alcohol that has the effect of killing off the wasps in their sy
stem. They can also identify the wasps by sight\, and when they see them
\, they will lay their eggs on more alcoholic food sources in (presumabl
 y) an effort to protect their offspring from being infected in the futur
 e. [Todd Schlenke](http://academic.reed.edu/biology/professors/schlenke/
)\, PhD\, professor of biology at Reed College\, will talk about his stu
dies that seem to show fruit flies self medicating and discuss how alcoh
ol might be used as medication in humans as well.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n_______

TION: While we can’t predict exactly when the next Great Cascadia Earthq
uake will happen\, we CAN forecast the probabilities from a long history
of past earthquakes. The study of the geological history of the last 10
\,000 years of the Cascadia Subduction Zone has shown that there have be
en 43 great earthquakes (magnitude 8.0 or higher) along the coast of Ore
gon\, Washington\, California\, and British Columbia. Some of these eart
hquakes were probably magnitude 9.0 or higher\, and like the 2011 Japane
se and 2004 Sumatran earthquakes\, they probably also caused large tsuna
mi waves that were devastating all over the Pacific. At this Science on
Tap\, Chris Goldfinger\, PhD\, professor of geology and geophysics at Or
egon State University\, will talk about the geology of Cascadia and his
research on the recurrence interval of major earthquakes. While this res
earch may not allow us to pinpoint a date for the next great quake\, a b
etter understanding of the geological forces at work can help us prepare
 .&#13\;\n&#13\;\nEvent Website&#13\;\n&#13\;\n_________ &#13\;\n&#13\;\n

DESCRIPTION:The Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Reed Coll
ege invites you to a public lecture by Prof. Harry L. Swinney\, Sid Rich
ardson Foundation Regents Chair of Physics and Director of the Center fo
r Nonlinear Dynamics at the University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Swinney
is one of the pioneering figures in the study of chaos theory and his l
ab has played a leading role in the study of nonlinear dynamics over the
past 40 years. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and h
is work has been recognized with numerous awards\, including the Moser P
rize\, the Richardson Medal\, and the Boltzmann Medal.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFr
om spatial patterns like the stripes on a zebra to temporal patterns lik
e the rhythmic beating of the heart\, patterns are ubiquitous in nature.
Understanding how these patterns emerge is one of science’s most enduri
ng mysteries. In this lecture\, aimed at a general audience\, Prof. Swin
ney will discuss how ordered patterns emerge as systems are driven away
from thermodynamic equilibrium. While no general theory of pattern forma
tion currently exists\, new analysis techniques\, experiments\, and comp
utational methods can provide general insights into pattern formation in
  a diversity of physical\, chemical\, and biological systems. &#13\;\n&#

DESCRIPTION:Didn't make it to part I? That is ok - come along anyway! At
our September meetup\, we started our open-source accessibility planning
guide\, using Gitbooks. We defined the goal of the book as a concise gu
ide for decision-makers in companies making software applications. We ro
ughed out chapters and each took one (see book for details on page one o
f each chapter).&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOur first milestone will be a chapter dr
aft from each of us by the November meetup\, when we will work on it mor
 e. Gitbooks enables anyone to write and design lovely books with as much
public collaboration as they wish. \n\nTags: tech\, technology\, access

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Puppet Labs for a presentation by Gian Wild on how
to make your mobile sites accessible. You want to make sure your deskto
p site is fully accessible but now it is perhaps more important to make
sure your mobile site or responsive web site is fully accessible to peop
le with with disabilities. Many people with disabilities prefer using a
mobile device to the desktop. WCAG2 was written before mobile devices w
ere ubiquitous\, and there are some accessibility issues unique to the m
obile format\, such as lack of keyboard\, lack of mouse hover and reduce
d screen size. Gian will be talking about the most common problems and h
ow you can avoid them.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMore about Gian Wild:&#13\
;\n&#13\;\nGian Wild is the CEO of AccessibilityOz an Australian company
that is expanding into the U.S. Market. Gian has worked in the accessib
ility industry since 1998 and consulted on the development of the first
Level AAA accessible web site in Australia. She ran the accessibility co
nsultancy PurpleTop from 2000 to 2005 and built the accessibility tool\,
PurpleCop. Gian Wild spent seven years on the W3C Web Content Accessibi
lity Guidelines Working Group and contributed to the W3C Evaluation and
Repair Tools Working Group and the W3C Authoring Tools Accessibility Gui
delines Working Group. She spent six years contributing to the developme
nt of WCAG2. In addition to her accessibility work\, Gian is often asked
to judge the accessibility aspect of web awards\, having previously jud
ged the Web Directions McFarlane Award\, been the Accessibility Judge fo
r FullCodePress (build a web site in a day) twice and has been the Acces
sibility Judge for the Australian Web Awards three years running.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nSoft drinks provided by Puppet Labs.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe Portlan
d Accessibility and User Experience Meetup will address how to incorpora
te accessibility and universal design principles into project planning\,
user research\, and UX evaluation. The purpose of this meet up is to ho
st an ongoing conversation about how to design and build tools that are
inclusive to the greatest number of people possible - meaning those with
and without (dis)abilities.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe intend to discuss topics
related to accessibility policy and regulations\, incorporating people w
ith disabilities into an iterative project lifecycle\, how to conduct UX
research with diverse populations\, automated and manual tools for UX e
valuation\, building accessibility into company policy and practice\, an
d much more!&#13\;\n &#13\;\nA UX Universal and Inclusive Design meet up
is timely as we see the Dept. of Justice handing down ruling after ruli
ng requiring digital products and services to be accessible (i.e. Netfli
x\, Redbox\, Target\, etc...). This meet up will provide a much needed r
esource for Portland based companies and individuals interested in acces
 sibility\, universal design\, and inclusive design. \n\nTags: tech\, tec
