DESCRIPTION:Join us for the April meeting of PdxDevOps.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#
 13\;\nAgenda:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nColin Hom from CoreOS&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nColin will showcase how CoreOS deploys production Kubernetes clusters
on AWS and the open-source tooling around this process. Kube-aws built a
round the idea of &quot\;cluster artifacts&quot\; and is designed to be
secure\, auditable and reproducible. A simple templating system is lever
aged to generate cluster configuration as a set of declarative configura
tion templates that can be version controlled\, audited and re-deployed.
Since the entirety of the provisioning is by AWS CloudFormation and clo
ud-init\, there’s no need for external configuration management tools on
  your end. Batteries included!&#13\;\n&#13\;\npdxdevops is a Portland\,
Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software de
velopment and systems operations\, and shares practical advice on workin
g effectively in an era of agile infrastructure\, server automation and
cloud computing. The group welcomes participants interested in any relat
ed products\, technologies and methodologies. The group has been meeting
regularly since August 2010 for presentations\, demos and discussions a
pplicable to all skill levels\, from newbies and experts. Every month 15
-35 people come together to share their knowledge\, projects and enthusi
 asm for devops – join us! \n\nTags: devops\, pdxdevops\, puppet\, aws\,

nMay is all about SERVICES! Particularly\, Service Meshes and the Open S
ervice Broker.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFirst Talk: An introduction to Conduit\, t
he Rust-based service mesh for Kubernetes&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe creators of
the CNCF-hosted Linkerd service mesh\, Buoyant\, recently introduced Co
nduit--a new\, ultralight service mesh made explicitly for Kubernetes. I
n this talk\, Buoyant engineer Carl Lerche will introduce you to Conduit
 \, its design philosophy\, how it’s used to add reliability\, security\,
and visibility to Kubernetes applications\, our motivations for writing
  the Conduit data plane in Rust\, and how to get involved.&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nSecond Talk: Stateful is Hard: Hooking Apps up to Managed DBs&#13\;\n&
#13\;\nKubernetes lets us write crazy-powerful apps these days\, and all
three clouds will host it for you in some shape or form now. The result
is that our apps are mostly portable\, but there's more work to do in t
his space. Aaron Schlesinger of the Microsoft Azure Containers group exp
lains.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDatabases are hard to maintain if you run them in
Kubernetes. Same with pub/sub systems\, or any combination of stateful a
nd data really. Sometimes we just want to hook our apps up to the cloud
equivalents of these things\, so we don't have to manage them. How do we
do _that_ in a portable way? Enter the Open Service Broker (OSB) API an
d Kubernetes Service Catalog.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nLearn how to connect your a
pps to all your favorite cloud services without ever opening the portal
or using the CLI. It's the same OSB API for all the clouds\, and the sam
e Kubernetes Service Catalog resources for any cluster. We're getting to
a place where you can get the services you need without caring what clo
ud your app runs on.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n**RSVP Required for this venue. Eit

DESCRIPTION:For the second time in Cloud Native PDX history\, we will be
having a joint meetup with OpenStack (now the Open Infrastructure Meetup
). This is also our first-ever Southwest Portland meetup.&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nTwo speakers will share their experiences in Kubernetes and OpenStack.
 Pizza\, beverages\, and raffle will round out the evening.&#13\;\n&#13\;
 \nAGENDA&#13\;\n5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Check-in\, Pizza\, &amp\; Networking&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\n6:00 – 6:30 p.m. Accelerating the Adoption of Hardware Acce
lerators in Kubernetes – Swati Sehgal of Intel&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWith conta
iners becoming the desired deployment model for a wide range of workload
 s such as Big Data\, IoT\, storage\, AI\, ML\, SDN and NFV solutions\, c
ontainer orchestration tools like Kubernetes\, need to evolve to meet st
ringent networking and resource management requirements for optimum util
ization of compute\, network and storage. Such application generate larg
e volume of data that needs to be securely transferred in and out of sto
rage and over the network and inherently require compression and encrypt
ion which makes them computationally expensive. Offloading such operatio
ns to the hardware accelerators results in better CPU utilization and im
 proved application performance.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n6:30 – 7:00 p.m. Containe
r Compliance Tooling -- Nisha Kumar of VMWare&#13\;\n&#13\;\nNisha intro
duces Tern\, a utility for software package introspection in containers.
This tool allows administrators to have the same level of confidence on
what's in their containers as they currently do with VM inages\, includ
ing compliance audits\, bill of materials\, and exploit detection. Nisha
is the primary author of Tern. https://github.com/vmware/tern&#13\;\n&#

ributor statistics for Kubernetes (devstats.cncf.io)\, but you're about
to find out that it is also a great demonstration case of migrating a co

 resenters: Michał Jastrzębski\, Hamel Husain\, Github&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbs
tract: Machine learning makes waves again\, we are being constantly&#13\
 ;\namazed by new feats neural networks can achieve. Models\, while&#13\;
\nimportant\, are a small part of the whole machine learning system. The
&#13\;\ninfrastructure it runs on\, the dataset itself and data&#13\;\nc
leaning/preprocessing pipeline are often omitted in news articles\,&#13\
;\nbut they are critical components of any machine learning project.&#13
\;\nInfrastructure\, in particular\, is a hard problem and there are few
&#13\;\ngood examples of running cloud-native machine learning. In GitHu

Kubernetes.&#13\;\nIn this talk we will walk through such end to end pr
oject\, one anyone&#13\;\ncan replicate at home (code is open source and
data is available)\, we&#13\;\nwill tackle hard natural language proble

DESCRIPTION:For a second meetup in October\, we will have two guest speak
ers from Red Hat: Elana Hashman and Ryan Jarvinen&#13\;\n&#13\;\n#1: Ela

data centers\, how can you be sure that it's operating within normal par
ameters? What does &quot\;normal&quot\; even mean? By formalizing your e

argets with open source tools like Prometheus. In this talk\, we'll use
Kubernetes as a case study for introducing service level objectives (SLO
 s) to guide monitoring efforts. Come learn the how and why of metric sel

the open source Kubernetes monitoring ecosystem\, how to use Prometheus
  and its exporters to establish predictability and &quot\;normal&quot\;
baselines\, and how to use this telemetry to debug service degradations
in a Kubernetes cluster.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n#2: Ryan Jarvinen will present &

DESCRIPTION:For this month's virtual CNPDX session\, Jürgen Etzlstorfer o
f the Keptn Project (and Dynatrace) will explain how to scale your Prome
theus installation:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPrometheus is considered a foundation
al building block when running applications on Kubernetes and has become
the de-facto open-source standard for visibility and monitoring in Kube
rnetes environments. Your first starting points when operating Prometheu
s are most probably configuring scraping to pull your metrics from your
services\, building dashboards on top of your data with Grafana\, or def
ining alerts for important metrics breaching thresholds in your producti
on environment. in your production environment.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs soon a
s you are comfortable with Prometheus as your weapon of choice\, your ne
xt challenges will be scaling and managing Prometheus for your whole fle
et of applications and environments. As the journey “From Zero to Promet
heus Hero” is not trivial you will find obstacles on the way. In this se
ssion we are highlighting the most common challenges we have seen and pr
ovide guidance on how to overcome them. Finally\, we are discussing a so
lution to get you there more quickly to build automated\, future-proof o

n Details: Metadata Driven Pipelines for Dynamic Full and Incremental Pr
ocessing in Azure SQL&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDeveloping ETLs/ELTs can be a compl
ex process when you add in business logic\, large amounts of data\, and
the high volume of table data that needs to be moved from source to targ
et. This is especially true in analytical workloads involving Azure SQL
when there is a need to either fully reload a table or incrementally upd
ate a table. In order to handle the logic to incrementally update a tabl
e or fully reload a table in Azure SQL (or Azure Synapse)\, we will need
to create the following assets:&#13\;\n• Metadata table in Azure SQL&#1
3\;\n◦ This will contain the configurations needed to load each table en
d to end&#13\;\n• Metadata driven pipelines&#13\;\n◦ Parent and child pi
peline templates that will orchestrate and execute the ETL/ELT end to en
d&#13\;\n• Custom SQL logic for incremental processing&#13\;\n◦ Dynamic
SQL to perform the delete and insert based on criteria the user provides
in the metadata table&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis session uses Azure SQL DB as
the source and sink databases. However\, Azure SQL MI\, On-Prem SQL\, an
d Synapse Dedicated Pools (along with Synapse Pipelines) will also be co
mpatible for this solution. As a source\, you can use databases like MyS
QL\, Oracle\, and others. You will just need to adjust the query syntax/
connections to match the desired source.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGuest Speaker: M
arc Bushong&#13\;\nMarc Bushong\, Senior Cloud Solution Architect at Mic
rosoft\, has extensive experience in healthcare and higher education. He
  excels in Azure architecture\, end-to-end solution design\, and full-st
ack Azure development. His career began as a Radiologic Technologist\, p

m - Playing Super Mario made me a better Platform Engineer - Ramiro Berr
elleza @ Okteto&#13\;\n&#13\;\nI grew up playing videogames. I still rem
ember that morning where Super Mario\, the og platformer\, was waiting u
nder the Christmas tree and I had to beat my brother to it. And now\, I’
m a grown up that talks all day about Platform Engineering. Coincidence?
  I think not!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this talk\, we’ll explore how Platformer
games and Platform Engineering have a lot more in common than we think.
Let’s breakdown some of Super Mario’s decades old best practices and se
e how we can use them to build better platforms that helps us beat our b
ig bad boss: developer friction and cognitive load.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n6:15p
m - Using Simulation to Understand Kubernetes - David Morrison @ Applied
Computing Research Labs&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDo you ever wish you could under
stand what's going on in your Kubernetes cluster? Do you wish that you c
ould safely make changes to your cluster without &quot\;experimenting in
prod&quot\;? Have you ever tried to reason about cost savings or capaci
ty planning and gotten stuck?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSimKube is an open-source t
ool to help you answer these questions. It is a record-and-replay simula
tion environment that lets you collect data about your production enviro
nment(s) and then replay them locally on your laptop to debug\, experime
nt\, and make predictions about your infrastructure. In this talk you'll
learn why simulation is an important tool for understanding your infras
tructure\, and how you can start using SimKube in your own environments.

Data: Building a Telemetry Pipeline to Handle High-Cardinality Metrics b
 y Chelsea Wright @ Mezmo&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHandling high-cardinality teleme
try data efficiently is crucial for modern observability systems. In thi
s session\, we will explore strategies for designing a scalable telemetr
y pipeline that can process large volumes of diverse metrics without per
formance bottlenecks. We’ll cover best practices for data ingestion\, st
orage optimization\, and query performance\, along with real-world techn
iques to mitigate challenges like high dimensionality and resource const
raints. Attendees will gain insights into building a robust telemetry pi
 peline that balances accuracy\, efficiency\, and cost-effectiveness.&#13
\;\n&#13\;\n6:15pm - What Producing Sound Effects Taught Me About Distri
buted Systems by Bret Bernhoft&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs a sound designer and cl
oud native developer\, I have discovered the art of crafting immersive a
udio effects mirrors the science of engineering distributed systems. In
this talk\, I will share how core audio production concepts like managin
g feedback loops\, dealing with signal degradation and understanding the
effects of reverb offer direct parallels to tackling challenges in micr
oservices\, observability and network latency. Just as a single\, comple
x sound effect is built from many interdependent layers\, modern applica
tions rely on an orchestration of services and timing\, demanding both p
recision and systems thinking.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe will explore how consid
ering signal-to-noise ratio can clarify your logging strategies and how
the art of mixing audio tracks provides valuable insights into resource
limits as well as task prioritization within your deployments. By drawin
g on these analogies\, this session aims to equip you with a new perspec
tive that makes the complexities of cloud native architectures a bit mor
e understandable\, all through the lens of sound.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n6:45pm

4 Foundational Principles for O11y That Scales by Noam Levy\, CTO at gro
 undcover&#13\;\n&#13\;\nLet’s face it\, collecting metrics\, logs\, and
traces isn’t enough anymore. Most o11y stacks today are drowning in tele
metry\, buried in cost overruns\, and spread so thin across tools that t
hey’ve become more noise than signal. The classic SaaS-based model is cr
acking.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis talk lays out 4 foundational principles for
building a sustainable observability posture - that scale with infra and
budget:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n* Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC): SaaS o11y is fina
ncially unsustainable at scale.&#13\;\n* Consolidate or Bust: DevEx suff
 ers when visibility is fragmented- consolidation isn’t a luxury - it’s a
requirement.&#13\;\n* Standardize Everything: Open protocols\, pluggabl
e pipelines\, and vendor-neutral APIs are the only way forward\, or your
  o11y is a ticking liability.&#13\;\n* Self-Reliance: You can’t rely on
app-level instrumentation forever - eBPF enables scalable o11y without c
omplexity&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis session pulls from real-world deployments
and lessons learned helping engineering teams scale visibility without c
ompromise.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n###&#13\;\n&#13\;\n“What It’s Like to Learn Cl

I chose not to avoid the unfamiliar. With no prior Kubernetes experience

a small burnout-aware study tool to ground abstract concepts in somethin

d-native technologies today from a beginner’s perspective. Through exper
 imentation with containers\, Kubernetes\, and cloud services\, I’ll refl
ect on the mental model shifts\, early misconceptions\, and “aha” moment
s that emerged from learning by building. Rather than focusing on expert

\;\nRunning MicroShift on Fedora Bootc for Scalable\, Secure\, and Resil
ient Edge Deployments - Ram Gopinathan\, Red Hat&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs edge
computing accelerates across industries—from utilities and manufacturing
to retail and smart cities—organizations are looking for lightweight\,
reliable\, and secure platforms to deploy containerized applications at
scale at the edge. Enter MicroShift\, a small-footprint Kubernetes distr
ibution\, paired with Fedora Bootc\, an image-based\, immutable operatin
g system built for consistency and resilience.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this se
ssion\, we’ll demonstrate how running MicroShift on Fedora Bootc creates
a powerful foundation for edge workloads\, combining the familiarity of
Kubernetes with the reliability of image-based OS updates and atomic ro

es boot-time performance\, and enhances system integrity—especially for
 unattended or resource-constrained edge environments.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMin

Git — through the console\, ad hoc scripts\, or third-party tools — lea
ving behind blind spots and compliance risk.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this talk
\, we’ll explore practical ways to track infrastructure drift and deltas
across AWS environments. You’ll learn how to snapshot configurations\,
compare changes between points in time\, and surface deltas across accou
nts in a format that’s accessible to engineers\, auditors\, and security
teams alike.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe'll demo an open-source tool built to sho
w Git-style diffs for AWS infrastructure — not as a pitch\, but as a cas

ting\, and cleaner audit trails. Whether you're running one VPC or a hun

nsport layer that moves KV blocks directly between GPUs — and dig into t
he Kubernetes integration for scheduling\, autoscaling\, and graceful fa
ilure handling. We'll close with a demo of Dynamo serving a real workloa

DESCRIPTION:For September\, we're taking advantage of a speaker in town f
or DevOpsDaysPDX\, and making it an all-observability night\, with Fluen
 tBit and OpenTelemetry.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDate: Wednesday\, September 16\,
 2026&#13\;\nTime: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM&#13\;\nLocation: SteepleJack Brewing
 \, Fireside Room\, 2400 NE Broadway\, Portland&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTalks are
typically recorded (opt-in by speakers)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nA big thank you t
o SuSE for sponsoring catering at SteepleJack\, as well as Eric's travel
.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFirst Presentation: No C\, No Opaque AI: Watch Your Fir
st Fluent Bit Contribution Happen Live&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker: Eric D. S
 chabell\, SuSE&#13\;\n&#13\;\nContributing to a CNCF graduated project f
eels out of reach until someone shows you exactly how it happens. In thi
s session\, that someone is on stage doing it in real time — spotting a
gap between what the Fluent Bit codebase actually does and what the docs
say\, opening a branch on a live fork\, running the project's prose lin
ter\, writing a properly signed commit\, and pushing a pull request that
closes a real tracked issue. Every step\, no shortcuts\, no slides pret
ending to be a terminal.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nYou will leave knowing the two-r
epo mental model that makes Fluent Bit doc contributions work\, the git
habits that signal credibility to maintainers\, and the AI guardrails th
at keep your name attached to work you actually stand behind. Your first
PR does not require deep C knowledge. It requires knowing where to look
\, how to show your work\, and when to keep your hands on the wheel.&quo
t\;&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSecond Presentation: Devs\, Transform (Your Data) and
Roll Out!: Learning and Leveraging OTTL&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker: Reese L
ee\, New Relic&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe OpenTelemetry Collector is OTel’s powe
r tool for ingesting and processing your app and infrastructure data\, b
ut there’s even more you can do with your data before it reaches your ba
ckend! Learn how to start leveraging OTTL\, or OpenTelemetry Transformat
ion Language\, to manage your data volume and quality. We’ll explore the
syntax basics and its underlying architecture within the Collector\, wh
ere its strength really comes into play\, when to use it (or not!)\, and
  more.\n\nTags: kubernetes\, containers\, cloud\, intrastructure\, devop
