DESCRIPTION:In the absence of a federal privacy law\, states have been en
acting their own laws to protect the privacy of their residents. Califor
nia began the trend by passing the California Consumer Privacy Act\, whi
ch became effective as of January 1\, 2020. Since then\, eighteen other
states have passed comprehensive privacy legislation\, including Oregon\
, the eleventh state to do so. Oregon's new law\, the Oregon Consumer Pr
ivacy Act (OCPA)\, took effect on July 1\, 2024 and gives Oregonians a n
ew and powerful set of consumer privacy rights and protections.&#13\;\n&
#13\;\nThe OCPA defines personal and biometric data broadly\, protects c
onsumer data rights holistically\, and holds companies that have access
to our data to high standards. The Act also gives consumers control over
how businesses use their personal data and guarantees Oregonians affirm
ative rights to manage and safeguard their personal data.&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nMore information about the OCPA is available here:&#13\;\nhttps://www.d
 oj.state.or.us/consumer-protection/id-theft-data-breaches/privacy&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nWhile this new law may seem complicated\, Dr. Katie Blevins\, a
Privacy Analyst with the Oregon Department of Justice\, will join us th
is month to explain how the new law works. She'll detail both consumer r
ights and business obligations set forth by the new law\, and she'll als
o discuss exemptions to the law and how any future federal laws might af
fect Oregon's law. Additionally\, she'll share information about what yo
u should do if you believe your rights have been violated and what happe
ns then.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBring your questions\, and come learn what the O
CPA means for you and your privacy!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis event is co-host
ed by PDX Privacy and Portland's Techno-activism 3rd Mondays. Please RSV
P via this Meetup page or by sending an email to ta3mevents@pdxprivacy.o
