e January gathering of the open source GIS group is on for 6:30-8pm at O
pen Sourcery on Jan. 26. Hope you all had a great holiday. The meeting
is byob but we usually wander to a nearby watering hole afterwards.&#13
\;\n&#13\;\n- MapBox - creating custom maps in the cloud. Sara is bring
ing someone involved with its development to show some things off. I've
been interested in their mb-tiles standard and tools for supporting off
line maps for a while.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n- GeoNode - version 1.0 of this pl
atform is out from the OpenGeo folks and it's starting to pick up steam.
An intriguing blend of Geoserver\, GeoNetwork\, GeoExt and OpenLayers
with a thick layer of Django to hold it all together. A legitimate open
-source SDI solution is evolving...&#13\;\n&#13\;\n- Becoming an officia
 l OSGEO chapter\, the quest continues&#13\;\n- FOSS4G 2011 in Denver. Se

packed with mapping goodness:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhen Google Maps Gives You
Lemons\, Make Lemonade - Wm Leler - @wmlelerGoogle Maps has long been th
e choice for embedding maps on your website\, or building map mashups. B
ut Google's recent announcement that they will start charging for maps (
or including ads on maps) has people looking at other options. As an add
ed bonus\, many of the alternative solutions have significant advantages
over Google Maps. If you are a website owner with an embedded simple m
ap\, this talk will show you how you can dump Google Maps and switch ove
r to other solutions in minutes (both free and paid). If you are a web d
esigner\, you'll see how you can customize maps so they will look the wa
y you want them to look\, not the way Google wants them to look. If you
are a programmer building map-based webapps\, you'll see how open source
mapping APIs like Leaflet and Modest Maps make it faster and easier to
build map mashups and have them work the way you want.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBi
o - Wm is a principal engineer at Flightstats\, where he draws lots of a
 irplanes\, airports\, weather\, and other things on maps\, and a Fellow
at the Banff Centre for the Arts\, where he has worked with some amazing
artists on web-based\, virtual reality\, and location-based mobile proj
 ects&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMapBox - Justin Miller - @incanus77.&#13\;\nJustin i
s all things iOS for the MapBox team. He'll be joining us again to show
us what MapBox has been up to lately (and they've been busy) including
their strategy in the Google Maps space\, their new iOS SDK\, MapBox str
eets layer\, custom styled maps\, what Artem from Mapnik is doing now th
at he's joined the team and what they're doing with open source in gener
al. Something for everyone and a great follow-up to Wm's talk.&#13\;\n&
#13\;\n&#13\;\nBio - Justin brings a wealth of mobile application develo
pment experience to MapBox. He has expertise in client-side programming
on the Mac\, iPhone\, and iPad\, as well as server-side programming and
 administration on UNIX platforms.&#13\;\n\n\nTags: gis\, open source\, g

 -8-tickets-19068949742&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhat’s a WhereCamp?&#13\;\n&#13\;\
 nWhereCamps connect geo-enthusiasts\, developers\, social place hackers\
 , artists\, activists\, grad students\, geographers\, earth scientists a
nd anybody else who wants to “know their place”.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPopular
topics include social cartography\, software and hardware\, context awar
eness\, mobile development\, humanitarian mapping efforts\, food webs an
 d local food transparency\, transit\, psychogeography\, geo games\, pape
 r maps\, and place hacking.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhereCamp is an unconference\
, which means it has little to no pre-selected content. Instead\, the co
ntent is provided by the participants once they arrive. Everyone gathers
in the morning to propose sessions and schedule them in blocks througho
ut the day. Sessions take many forms\, from prepared talks to open discu
ssions to running around outside with balloons. We value open participat
ion\, providing access to new voices\, and lowering barriers to particip
ation. The result is a fun event is driven by the interests and talents
 of the participants.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nKeynote Speaker: Matthew Freid&#13\;
\n&#13\;\nMatthew Freid manages the Corporate GIS Program in the Bureau
of Technology Services at the City of Portland. The CGIS Program provide
s a central repository of GIS data that is available to internal custome
rs and external access through Portlandmaps.com. Matt will be speaking o
n the following topics:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Background on City of Portlan
d Open Data efforts&#13\;\n What the city has been working on for the
new version of Portland maps.&#13\;\n How the city uses API’s to acc
ess spatial and tabular data and how developers could use them as well&#
13\;\n Plans for making more city data available as part of this effo
rt&#13\;\n Work the city are doing on key datasets for the community
 including addresses and buildings.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHow can I help?&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nWhereCampPDX is an all volunteer-run event. We’re just kicking
off the bulk of the planning process now\, and would love to have more f
olks scheming with us to make this the best WhereCampPDX ever. If you ca
n lend a hand\, please join our mailing list.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn order to
keep WhereCampPDX free for everyone\, we rely on the generous support o
f our sponsors. If your company is interested in supporting our efforts\
 , please drop us a line.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpread the word!&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
We’d love if it you could take a moment to tell other interested geonerd
 s in your life about WhereCampPDX.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSome ideas:&#13\;\n&#1
3\;\n Post to your blog!&#13\;\n Share your interest on Twitter\,

t’s memorable\, entertaining\, and paints a vivid picture that the viewe
 r connects with.  We’ll dive into two different scenarios.&#13\;\n&#13\;
 \nPolicy Advocacy&#13\;\n&#13\;\nImagine a world with zero traffic-relat
ed injuries. That’s what the Portland Vision Zero campaign wants to ach
ieve in the next 10 years with the participation of the City of Portland
\, Oregon Walks\, Bike Portland and other groups. With construction boom
ing in Portland\, one of the biggest concerns is construction closures w
hich often bring together vehicles\, bikes\, and pedestrians in unexpect
ed and unsafe ways. How can we utilize maps to illustrate issues like t
his\, demonstrate alternatives\, and advocate for improving policy? Thi
s project is seeking collaborators\, please reach out to us.&#13\;\n&#13
\;\nProduct Marketing&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGood product presentation goes beyo

l data across distinct data sets\, using a mix between Levenshtein Dista
nce thresholds and Haversine Distance thresholds. This approach permits
joining multiple data sets without the need to provide ad hoc normaliza

 eo&#13\;\n&#13\;\n++++++++++++++&#13\;\n&#13\;\n[1] HOWL: 3D/4D mapping
and visualization of Oregon’s wildlands&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe HOWL (Highlig
hting Oregon's WildLands) project aims to create an interactive 3D/4D ma
pping and visualization tool for presenting spatio-temporal information
relevant to the preservation of wilderness and wildlife protection in Or
egon. HOWL will be available to conservation advocates (e.g.\, Oregon Wi
ld) and the general public\, to improve dissemination\, understanding an
d interpretation of multiple publicly available data sources. Candidate
data sets include boundaries of current and proposed wilderness areas\,
wild and scenic river areas\, national forests and other public lands\,
wildfire events\, wildlife migrations\, deforestation history\, and sate
llite imagery\, to name a few.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHOWL is a web application
being built using CesiumJS\, a powerful open source 3D mapping and visua
lization library\, which enables incorporating not only realistic terrai
n modeling\, but also volumetric symbols to build interactive 3D themati
c maps. In addition\, HOWL will leverage the temporal visualization capa
bilities of CesiumJS to add the 4th dimension\, thus enabling dynamic pl
ayback of related past and/or predicted events. Visualizations examples
include wildfire history in old growth forest areas\, wildlife migration
  records\, and deforestation chronicles.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis presentatio
n dives into details of building HOWL by leveraging open source front-en
 d components (e.g.\, CesiumJS\, jQuery\, Bootstrap)\, back-end tools (e.
 g.\, MapShaper\, toGeoJson\, TopoJSON\, node.js) and workflows for data
acquisition\, transformation\, and integration. The presentation address
es key design decisions\, technical challenges and future developments.\

 is month:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n- We'll check out &quot\;Mapping Inequality&quo
t\; [1]\, a project out of University of Richmond\, University of Maryla
nd\, Virginia Tech and John Hopkins. The project uses Leaflet and CartoD
B to display georeferenced maps and redlining data from in the late 30's
  - with a focus on redlining and abrasive\, unfiltered racist language t
hat has directly influenced the formation of neighborhoods today.&#13\;\
n&#13\;\n- We also have a very cool spatial analysis presentation from K
evin that will show how he used PostGIS\, QGIS and Geopy to calculate th
e most remote locations in Oregon and Washington\, along the lines of wh
at Project Remote [2] has been doing for the whole lower 48. Kevin's pro
ject also used Leaflet\, MapboxGL JS and Turf for visualization.&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nWe'll also cover the latest happenings in geodata\, upcoming ge
oevents and bring your own geo-show and tell\, so if you see something i
 nteresting in your geo-travels be sure to bring it along to share!&#13\;
