DESCRIPTION:For November\, we have David Nash as our very special guest.T
his is the last meetup for the year as we will be taking a winter/holida
y break in December. So make sure you join us and learn from a Product Ma
 nagement legend in Portland! Here's David's self-introduction:&quot\;Sin
ce arriving here in ’92 from New York\, Portland has been very\, very go
od to me. Like the TV commercial says\, ‘I know a few things because I’v
e seen a few things’. I would add that I’ve been blessed to meet some am
azing people along the way. I came here courtesy of Intel\, where I work
ed for some 17 years\, and where I had the good fortune to reinvent myse
lf several times: from motherboards to software-video &amp\; telecom\, f
rom Intel Labs\, to venture investing and internal startups\, I did ever
ything I could to try new things\, soak it all in\, and become versatile
. After leaving Intel in 2006\, I spent 10 years at ADP Dealer Services
(now known as CDK Global) where we built software for Automotive Retaile
rs &amp\; OEMs. Last October – just about 1 year ago – I had the amazing
good fortune to join NAVEX Global\, who provides the world’s most compr
ehensive Ethics &amp\; Compliance SaaS platform – and has the inspiring
mission of helping organizations protect their people\, reputation\, and
bottom line. Our mission really speaks to me because\, as a Boy Scout L
eader for 25 years\, I care a lot about integrity and being a servant le
ader. In addition to networking relentlessly along the way\, I’ve also f
ollowed my passion in Product Management and created ProductCamp Portlan
d in 2012. We’re running our 7th camp in March 2018. This one will be ex
citing for sure. And free pizza as usual!\n\nTags: meetup:event=24338477

&#13\;\nMicrosoft Excel is perhaps the most important computer software
program used in business today. That's why so many workers and prospecti
ve employees are required to learn Excel to enter or remain in the workp
lace. Unfortunately many college students\, recent grads\, and professio
nals haven’t mastered Excel or have the adequate Excel skills employers
are seeking. According to Payscale\, “ 80 percent of job openings requir

ver even give Excel a chance because it has an intimidating stigma aroun
d it.”&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf you walk through the finance or accounting depa

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR&#13\;\nMartin Jetton has 30+ years of advanced supp
ly chain analytics\, predictive analytics\, and statistical consulting e
xperience. He's currently a Principal at the Liberty Advisor Group\, whe
re he works in advanced supply chain analytics. In his previous role\, h
e was the Senior Predictive Consultant at Corios\; where he developed pr
edictive models and scorecards\, forecast trends\, identify uncertaintie
s\, and assign the ideal strategies to maximize performance. The firm’s
clients are in the banking\, brokerage\, credit\, utilities and healthca
re industries.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBENEFITS&#13\;\nNot only are many business
professionals using Excel to perform everyday functional tasks in the w
orkplace\, an increasing number of employers rely on Excel for decision
support. The ability to analyze data is a powerful skill that helps you m
ake better decisions. Microsoft Excel is one of the top tools for data a
nalysis and the built-in pivot tables are arguably the most popular anal
ytic tool.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMAKE YOUR RESUME STAND OUT&#13\;\nThey are NOT
seeing if you simply have Excel as a skill. They are diving deeping whe
n it comes to determining which candidate to interview and hire. They lo
 ok for Pivot Table\, VLOOKUP\, Macros\, VBA\, Conditional Formatting\, C
harting and Filtering…These are far more telling of your ability to an e
mployer then writing Excel. Someone who writes VLOOKUP\, Pivot Table\, F
iltering demonstrates an ability to analyse data and so has eliminated a
potential barrier in the mind of the hiring manager reviewing your resu
me. In essence\, use actual Excel functions in your Resume!&#13\;\n&#13\
;\nINCREASE YOUR EARNING POTENTIAL&#13\;\nDid you know that Excel know-h
ow can instantly increase your job prospects as well as your starting sa
lary? Excel is a transferrable skill that any hiring manager understands
is critical.&#13\;\nResearch shows job applicants who know MS Excel mak
e $22.66 per hour on average compared to the $20.14 per hour their peers
make who don’t know the program. That’s roughly an extra $20 per eight-
hour workday and $100 per work week\, simply for knowing how to use a si
ngle computer program. Moreover\, full-time employees in certain industr
ies can see a starting salary bump of anywhere from $1\,000 to $7\,000 p
er year based on their Excel skills. That’s not chump change you can ign
 ore.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nINSPIRING ENTREPRENEUR?&#13\;\nA majority 63 percent
of twenty-somethings want to start their own business. How will you sta
y organized\, track data\, or forecast your finances if you’re not sprea
dsheet-savvy?&#13\;\nMany millennials simply want their first job. But\,
what about your performance once someone hires you? The biggest complai
nt employers have about millennials is that they lack basic hard and sof
t skills. These skills include things like teamwork and problem solving\,
but also basic administrative skills like MS Word and Powerpoint. Once
you’re hired\, you want to meet the basic requirements of your role with
out stressing.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWHO SHOULD COME?&#13\;\nPeople whose work

DESCRIPTION:This event is hybrid\; a Zoom link will be emailed to regist
ered attendees closer to the date\, but please note that the talk itself
doesn't start until 6:30!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nFebruary is right in the middl
e of peak hiring season\, and PNSQC has a couple of speakers lined up to
help you land that next role in a very competitive market.&#13\;\n&#13\
;\nFirst\, Jeremy Elwood will give his talk titled The Paradox of Plenty
 : A Modern Hiring Story. It's a reflection on finding a job\, but told f
rom the employer's perspective: exploring what actually differentiated s
uccessful candidates from the rest\, why resume screening failed to surf
ace the strongest candidates\, and what to look for in a successful cand
idate. Along the way\, it offers concrete advice for everyone: how job s
eekers can better present their experience\, approach take-home challeng
es\, and prepare for interviews\; and how hiring managers can ask better
questions\, design meaningful evaluations\, and reduce unnecessary pain
in the process. Ultimately\, the talk aims not only to surface systemic
problems in modern software engineer hiring\, but also to offer practic
al guidance and cautious optimism for navigating (and surviving) the &qu
 ot\;paradox of plenty&quot\;.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHeather Wilcox is excited t
o follow with her talk titled Resume Tips and Tricks\, which will go fur
ther in depth on how to write a resume that hiring managers will notice\
, along with other helpful hints for survival in the era of AI. As an ex
perienced hiring manager and job seeker herself\, Heather has reviewed h
undreds (maybe thousands?) of resumes. She can tell you that the AI and
recruiter generated resumes are usually easy to spot and often treated w
ith a certain amount of disdain and distrust. But\, at the same time\, y
ou need your information to get past the AI screeners and into the hands
of a real human. It's not an easy needle to thread\, but she's done it
and so can you!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSchedule (all times in PT):&#13\;\n6-6:30
PM: Light refreshments (soft drinks\, pizza) and networking&#13\;\n6:30
