The 62-year old Kashmir Conflict is one of the most intractable in the world. Increasingly, India and Pakistan have shown a greater willingness to consider fresh ideas for resolving the dispute. One of the most promising developments in recent years has been their amenability to hold dialogue on normalizing the situation in the Kashmir region through enhanced economic and human interaction between the Pakistani and Indian-administered parts of Kashmir.

Mercy Corps' Regional Program Director, Michael Bowers, has on-the-ground experience in this part of the world, and is recently returned from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Come hear Michael speak about what Mercy Corps is doing in these regions, and how the Phoenix Fund is in an innovative position to make economic and social changes to the Kashmir region.

This event is being hosted by Mercy Corps in it's new building located at 28 SW First Avenue in the historic Old Town Chinatown neighborhood.

Bringing cost effective energy to the Billions living in primitive conditions

Over 1.6 billion people, upwards of 30% of the global population, are without access to electricity. Electricity advances developmental factors such as small business development, extended working hours, access to communications, enhanced education levels and rural development. Energy can improve life of millions.

In developing countries access to energy remains constrained by factors such as limited access to well adapted affordable technology, fragmented small markets, prohibitive taxes and limited financial resources. On Dec 14th , at the Copenhagen Climate conference the Obama Administration announced a $350 million dollar initiative dubbed “Climate REDI” to promote clean energy technologies in developing countries.

Join us on March 17th for a discussion with our expert panel, on what kind of innovations in products, finance, supply and service can ensure reliable & affordable energy to the billions of poor across the world.

Our 2 presenters Michael(Kipp) Baratoff, Principal, Equilibrium Capital & Patrick Maloney, Program Director, Lemelson Foundation have been fully immersed in this space, having been engaged with social entrepreneurs over the course of their careers. Lemelson Foundation awarded an energy grant to Selco India for it’s Incubation Center and Innovation Department to develop new products and new business models to solve key problems for energy consumers. The SELCO Solar Light Private Limited (SELCO India) is already an important provider of solar systems and cook stoves in southern India, with products that allow rural families to increase their household income while reducing the environmental and health risks of higher-cost kerosene lamps and inefficient stoves.

Our event organizer, TiE Oregon Clean Energy SIG chair, Ravi Sinha, is the Chairman of Choice Solar India Pvt Ltd., company engaged in creative distribution of energy solutions to India's marginalized residents.

Bill Campbell, our moderator for the evening is also a Principal at Equlibrium as well as a TiE Oregon Charter Member and Board Member.

They will bring an insight into problems, economics, delivery & growth of energy solutions.

This event is also a continuation of our theme “Serving the 6 Billion” on which we launched TiE Oregon in 2007. The keynote (watch the video on our website) speaker at the launch was C.K Prahalad, Paul & Ruth McCracken Distinguished University Professor of Corporate Strategy at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, a globally recognized business consultant, who gave a stirring speech about the Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid.

It centers on the proposition that the world's poor can be the engine of the next round of global trade and prosperity and can be a source of innovation.

We all know Ghandi once said: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Many of us are pretty good at practicing that principle in our personal lives, but what about at work? The goal of this one day workshop is to motivate and educate potential “change agents” in the high tech and IT industries on how to use the scientifically-based framework of The Natural Step (TNS) in launching successful sustainability initiatives in their organization. You can then apply this framework and the new ways of thinking presented in this course to make you and your organization more innovative, more competitive and ultimately more sustainable.

Training Objectives: What You Will Learn

* A whole systems perspective for considering sustainability
* The Natural Step framework, including the four system conditions
* The basic science underlying The Natural Step Framework
* How the framework is used for decision making and strategic planning
* Suggested ideas for applying the TNS framework in technology organizations
* Resources for fresh ideas and assistance when you wonder what to do next
* Through case studies, how organizations have benefited from implementing the framework

Green Light Movie…The Sustainable Oroville Open House
A call to action for leaders and press.

Being from the Pacific Northwest; you are considered a sustainability thought leader. You are cordially invited to our open house, a free solution based networking event.

Are you looking to get something out of the time you spend at a networking event? Do you attend green networking events to meet new people, or to participate in a solution?

Join the key Sustainable Oroville and Green Light Movie team for an engaging conversation. City leaders are saying YES to “green” through Sustainable Oroville – a civic initiative that already has attracted a canola crushing plant (which will produce canola oil and meal), as well as plans for the nation’s first sustainable, passive haus hotel. Since the launch of this initiative, Oroville is gaining attention from other clean-technology entrepreneurs and sustainability advocates who want to see it succeed.

So what’s the big deal? Oroville isn’t waiting around for the world to change … instead, it’s taking steps to change the world.

Oroville’s journey into sustainability will create a road map that other agriculture-dependent communities can adopt. Capturing this transformation in a documentary film creates a proof-of-concept that can be distributed worldwide. Through conversations with local leaders, business owners and residents, as well as sustainability movement leaders, we will show a grassroots effort creating change we NEED to see in the world.

This is your opportunity to play a part in a "think globally, act locally" solution that is happening right now while being documented in the Green Light Movie, the Sustainable Oroville Project film.

This is not your usual networking event. Stop by anytime between 3pm and 6pm. Stay as long as you like. Get one on one talking time with the thought leader visionaries. Listen to the vision, get questions answered, and see how YOU can intersect your experience, skills, and passion into this movement that is providing a solution to improve qualities of life in our very own Pacific Northwest communities.

Join us for a screening of this inspiring film about the future of business, and how business can change the future of our planet. Created by author, filmmaker, and professor, Dr. Wayne Visser, this film takes an optimistic viewpoint to climate change and innovative solutions.
Date and Time: June 28, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Location: PSU: Smith Memorial Student Union: Parkway North 1825 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97201

Cost: $5

Going “circular” refers to the necessary change from our current take-make-waste linear economy to a borrow-use-return circular economy (sometimes also referred to as the zero-waste or cradle-to-cradle economy).

The key takeaway message from Closing the Loop is that moving to a circular economy is not only essential and urgent, but also entirely possible, if we take inspiration from the pioneers, such as those featured in the film, and scale up similar business models, product innovations and customer solutions around the world.

It will not be easy – and there is no “one size fits all” approach, as the varied experiences across three continents show – but the circular economy revolution is imperative. As presenter Dr Visser puts it:

“If we don’t solve this one problem [i.e. moving from a linear to a circular economy], everything else we do, no matter how well-intentioned it is, will be like shifting deck chairs on the Titanic.”

“After years spent working on sustainability, I am convinced that we are on the cusp of a major revolution – nothing short of the next industrial revolution. The time for fear-mongering and demonising companies has past. Now is the time for innovative solutions and positive action. This is nowhere more true than in the do-or-die challenge of creating a circular economy.”

“We still have much work to do, but our task could not be more clear. So get inspired and, to quote Gandhi – a sustainability luminary before his time – be the change you want to see in the world.”

Stay afterward for a brief discussion about the circular economy and how you can apply these powerful principles to your life and business.

For more information about the film, you can visit www.ClosingtheLoopFilm.com.

Event is co-sponsored by Consious Capitalism Portland and MonicaBourgeau.com.

We're excited to have the chance to sit down with Kate Ertmann for a question and answer session.

Her life's work has been focusing on building from scratch — or rebuilding and reorganizing — the operational infrastructure for sustainable businesses. That includes everything from the elements of a business plan, the importance of Mission and Purpose and Values, the how-to of defining Roles and Responsibilities, and when to hire and how to best structure that management org chart — as well as the finance that runs in parallel with all of that.

Her distinct rallying cry through all of that work is the necessity of embedding equity and inclusion in all processes, procedures, and culture of an organization, and as a guiding principle in all leaders with whom she works — especially when it is "hard" or if there are uncomfortable conversations to be had.

Kate constantly seeks to leverage her privilege and position: applying constant pressure to the systemic structure of 20th century practices so there can be systemic changes that will define 21st century practices.
