Equilibrium: The Human Mash Up

Featuring Live DJs Echoik & Frequency

Working Artists Network + Software Association of Oregon introduce Equilibrium: The Human Mash Up. In the spirit of disruptive ideas and breaking down barriers we ask, "How can art and technology and the synergy of the two address humanity's next evolutionary step?" Four categories of work will address these questions and collectively speak to the power of human ingenuity. We invite artistic and technological creators to submit their work that addresses human survival in an era of interspecies evolution, revolution, and devolution.

Art and technology are two words that for many represent vastly different worlds, and for generations have largely existed along parallel, yet non-convergent lines. But now the potential for unprecedented collaboration is here. Ever-evolving technologies allow us to share ideas across borders, both geographic and symbolic. Such potential for shared ideas has helped break down long standing silos that for generations inhibited expansive thought and human progression.

The lines are now blurred. Creators of all sorts now have public space to mutually ponder where we've been, where we are, and where we're going. By sharing once segregated perspectives, we can see the world through a different lens and evolve as a species like never before.

E= m4 humanity - Submissions will fall into one of four conceptual areas:

Momentum: captures the inertia and velocity of human innovation
Maintenance: captures the drive for ecological and human preservation
Multiplicity: captures the boundless potential of human convergence
Mobility: captures the facilitation of human movement and idea exchange

6:15 - 6:30: 30-Second Mic (give us your technology business elevator pitch!!)
7:00 Program: Jerry Saveriano, Sanda Communications - Introduction to Social Media for B2B companies.

PROGRAM:

How's your blog? Do you Twitter? Are your customers talking about your company online? Have your competitors started to use social media tools like YouTube videos, LinkedIn or even FaceBook to reach out to your markets? Social media and networks are exploding for B2B applications* and this presentation can help get you started.

SM4B2B will discuss how you can develop an online strategy to decide if SM is the best new way to engage your customers, prospects, channel partners and even your own people, whether they are on the other side of the globe or in the next cubical. And if it's the right time for your business, we'll show you how to get a fast, affordable start to test the waters.

We'll show examples of SM4B2B websites we built including what worked and what failed. We'll provide you with a set of definitions, research materials and good business reasons for going Web2.0 this year.

We'll cover key SM4B2B topics such as:

* What it is and why it's important.
* How to decide if now's the time.
* What does it cost? What will it make? Will it pay? How long will it take?
* How to start small, fast and cheap
* Should you build your own or join an industry community?
* What are the right tools, platforms and people to get started?

The Corvallis Chapter of the Software Association of Oregon is starting a Special Interest Group (SIG) to explore the best ways of growing our businesses using social media tools and helping other local companies learn how to get online putting Web 2.0 and social media tools to work. If you’re interested in seeing what we're planning to do with the SAO SM4B2B SIG (enough initials for you?), this meeting is the place to be. An objective of the SM4 SIG will be to build an online community of local companies that participate in the High Tech After Hours Conference held in Corvallis each November.

SPEAKER:

Jerry W. Saveriano, President & CEO - Sanda Communications, Inc (http://sandacom.com/)

Jerry W. Saveriano is president of Sanda Communications, a marketing, advertising and public relations agency that has for over a decade worked with high tech, software and other clients..

For over twenty-five years Saveriano has consulted and lectured internationally on advanced automation topics such as CAD/CAM, geomatics, robotics and Artificial Intelligence. He was Industrial Editor of Robotics Age magazine, founding Chairman of the Southern California Chapter of Robotics International and wrote the Pioneers of Robotics article in the Encyclopedia of Robotics published by John Wiley & Sons in 1988.

He created a series of articles and lectures on Internet Marketing and Customer Relationship Management. Jerry put on the first CRM workshop at Oregon Graduate Institute and wrote a CRM titled “E-This!” column for the Software Association of Oregon (SAO) newsletter. He has lead Sanda's Web 2.0 initiative in building online communities for B2B clients, non-profits and state agencies.

*Social Networks Get Down to Business, AUGUST 18, 2008

Think of them as digital water coolers—surrounded by thousands of workers engaged in serious business conversations.

"As compelling as the ad growth is, marketers will spend far more over the next few years to create and manage their own social networks for business customers, partners, suppliers and vendors," says Debra Aho Williamson, senior analyst at eMarketer and author of the new report, B2B Marketing on Social Networks: Engaging the Business Audience. "These business networks will serve a range of purposes, from improving customer communication and collaboration to aiding product development."

Join us for this free event at the Oregon State Capitol to learn how to position your company for federal & state government contracts. Shipley Associates and the Oregon State Procurement Office will have experts on hand to provide insights and answer questions on what can be a bewilderingly complex process.

Research Drives Us
We recently took a survey and found that over 63% of software decision-makers thought that obtaining a state or federal contract would enable them to hire the most employees. To our surprise, this was more popular than obtaining venture capital, tax credits or enhanced private lending.

We Want to Help
Since the current economic crisis can be traced back to a lack of jobs, and since the stimulus packages present new job opportunities, and since we have federal & state experts that are willing to help, we decided to be part of the solution instead of whining about the state of the economy.

Our Trainers
Shipley Associates are well-respected as the best private support for obtaining federal contracts
Shipley Associates has:
• Worked with 43 of the top 50 Fortune 500 companies
• Developed a virtual proposal center for a Fortune 10 client
• Trained over 30,000 people worldwide

The Oregon State Procurement Office establishes and administers contracts for goods and services on behalf of state agencies, state universities, select non-profit organizations, and local governments. They will give very practical advice for working with the ORPIN (Oregon Procurement Information Network) system, which is Oregon's #1 resource for viewing Public Agency Opportunities.

PROGRAM:

A New Scale for Nuclear Power

The Corvallis Chapter of the Software Association of Oregon begins 2010 with presentation from NuScale Power, a local nuclear technology start-up that leveraged technology transferred from Oregon State University to create a revolutionary model for modular nuclear reactors. Kent Welter, a Principal Engineer at NuScale, will give an overview of the technology and describe how NuScale has shaped the future nuclear energy.

The world needs clean, reliable ways to generate electricity. The United States is expected to need 300 gigawatts of new capacity – that’s 150 times the capacity of Hoover Dam – by 2030. Developing nations can only grow as fast as they can power their economies. Global demand for new electric capacity will outpace the U.S. by tenfold in the same period.

Electric companies and government leaders are looking for ways to ensure their citizens have reliable, affordable supplies of electricity. They worry about the volatility of fossil fuel prices and the effects of green house gases.

NuScale Power is providing one of many answers to this problem. NuScale has developed a small nuclear power system that is safe, modular and scalable. The technology was borne of research by leading nuclear scientists with the support of the U.S. government. The design of the NuScale power plant builds on hundreds of combined years of operating experience with commercial light water reactors along with extensive research and laboratory testing of advanced safety systems.

Meeting future demand for electricity requires that we use what we have more efficiently. We must also look to new technologies using wind, solar and wave power and use proven technologies such as nuclear power to meet the needs of future generations.

Join us in for a night of networking and showcase with local technology leaders and entrepreneurs.

AGENDA:

6:45 Program: Co-Working in Oregon

PROGRAM:

Co-working is a growing movement around the United States and across the world. As more people work from home or work while they are traveling or are in the midst of a rapid startup cycle, they find that they can be more effective and more productive by gathering together to work. Starting with projects like the Hat Factory in San Francisco, co-working sites have bloomed. There are several co-working facilities in the Nortwest, some which are expanding to multiple cities and some that focus on specific audiences or markets. The February SAO meeting will be a panel discussion by three Oregon co-working entrepreneurs: Jeff Jimmerson from Madison Avenue Collective in Corvallis, Josh Friedman from Ned Space in Portland and Rick Turoczy from Portland Innovation Experiment.

Jeff Jimerson, founder of the Madison Ave. Collective (http://www.madcollective.com/)

Madison Ave. Collective (the MAC) is a shared office and studio space located in downtown Corvallis, 72 steps west of Starbucks on the corner of 5th street and—you guessed it—Madison Ave. After three months of heavy remodeling, Jeff opened the space on 08/08/08 with a "nice people wanted" Craigslist ad.

Today, twelve creative and tech professionals call the MAC home for their respective small businesses.

Rick Turoczy, founder of Silicon Florist (http://siliconflorist.com/)

Rick Turoczy has been working in high-tech marketing communications jobs in the Portland area for the past 15 years. Out of pure dumb luck, he happened to sit up in bed at 2 AM one night in August 2007 with the inspiration to start Silicon Florist, a blog about Portland startups in the Web, Mobile, and Open Source scenes.

Since then, he’s chatted with The Oregonian a bunch of times, appeared on local television and radio, made a brief appearance on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, garnered bylines in The New York Times, spoken at numerous events, been selected as a runner up for the Portland Business Journal’s “40 under 40,” launched a startup incubator with the help of Wieden+Kennedy, and co-produced a groundbreaking Web-based telethon called 30 hour day.

All because of a blog. Weird.

Josh Friedman, co-founder of NedSpace (http://www.nedspace.com/)

Josh Friedman is the co-founder of NedSpace, a provider of co-working facilities for entrepreneurs and startups. NedSpace is designed to be the place where entrepreneurs go to build and grow their businesses. Along with his business partner Mark Grimes, NedSpace has itself grown quickly into two locations from its launch in early 2009. The goal is to open 10 more locations throughout the US in 2010, and eventually to have a NedSpace in every city with a startup ecosystem.

Josh serves on the Board of Starve Ups, a Portland-based entrepreneurial organization and the Oregon Entrepreneurs Forum Advisory Board. He holds a B.S. degree in speech communication from Oregon State University. Aside from helping entrepreneurs grow their companies, you might find him rock climbing, skiing, cycling, brewing beer or generally causing trouble along with his dog Ace.

PROGRAM:

Social Media Panel -- Increasing Your Business Through Social Media: What's Important and Why You Should Care

Social Media is here. Facebook has 300 million members. Youtube is the second largest search engine in the world. Twitter is approaching 50 million tweets a day.

Companies large and small are embracing social media to help get the word out, connect with customers, and provide another way to reach customer service. Comcast is turning its image around largely due to its Twitter account for customer support (@ComcastCares). This year Pepsi decided not to air any Super Bowl ads in favor of their Social Media campaigns. A Portland food-cart, Whiffies, does nearly all of its marketing on Twitter and is expanding to Seattle.

Are your Social Media efforts floundering? Don't know where to start? Feeling overwhelmed with all of the information? Come learn about how you can do things better, smarter, or just get started.

Join us for a night of networking and to get your social media questions answered.

Good business decisions require relevant and valid information. Deciding what information is relevant can be challenging – especially as organizations transition to Agile development and project management methods. This presentation will explore ways to use the Goal-Question-Metric (GQM) technique to inform good decisions by identifying some relevant reporting measures when applying the Agile scrum methodology.

Agile teams value working software over comprehensive documentation. Teams deliver working software in short, iterative releases of business value rather than larger releases of longer duration. This increases the need to make quick decisions and the need for relevant and timely information. GQM provides a goal-driven way to identify the information our stakeholders really need.

This presentation will walk through using GQM, look at examples of applying it, review some relevant Agile measures and discuss relevant measures for different stakeholders. Audience participation is expected.

If you had just five minutes to showcase your cutting-edge products, technologies, or methodologies, what would you say? What if you were forced to present those ideas with 20 PowerPoint slides that each rotated automatically after 15 seconds?

The Software Association of Oregon is sponsoring an Ignite event on September 15th. As a speaker, you'll land a platform that challenges not only the way you present your ideas, but grants you access to an audience eager to listen. As an attendee, you'll learn about emerging, innovative, locally-sourced concepts while networking with a diverse and passionate crowd of like-minded, "early-adopters."

What is Ignite?
Ignite is a fast-paced geek event where speakers share their personal and professional passions via 20 Powerpoint slides each auto-advancing every 15 seconds, giving each speaker exactly 5 minutes of fame. Quick, fun, thought-provoking, social, local, global - Ignite is all of these and more. It satisfies the ADD in all of us. It's a high-energy evening of 5-minute talks by local people who have an idea - and the guts to get onstage and finally give that "elevator speech" we've all been told we need but rarely get to give.

Agenda
5:30pm Doors open, badges, networking, booths, and music
7:00pm Welcome & Ignite talks begin
7:45pm Break
8:00pm Ignite talks resume
8:45pm Ignite talks end, final networking
9:00pm Event ends

Identifying fraud and suspicious activity on the Internet is all about data. iovation protects its customers by analyzing devices performing high value transactions and recommending an action in real-time based on past activity. Apache Cassandra can consume and analyze a ridiculous amount of data while keeping costs low.

At iovation an implementation using Cassandra currently supports 10,000 read/write operations per second on a cluster storing over 1 billion rows in 500GB, Cassandra makes this solution horizontally scalable, highly available, recoverable, and cheap (under $20k).

In this presentation Darin will cover some of the other options his team explored, hardware choices that were made, and the more interesting tunables Cassandra offers that allow you to squeeze IOPS out of your cluster.

Presenter: Darin Glatt, Principal Application Architec, iovation
Darin Glatt is software developer with over 10 years experience working with large-scale distributed systems. He is currently the Application Architect for iovation where he helps fight fraud, account take over, and identity theft on the Internet by tracking device reputation and suspicious activity in real-time. Prior to taking on the bad guys of the Internet, Darin helped build a massively multi-player blackjack game for the UltimateBet platform and developed MetroOnes nationwide VoIP network, the backbone of their 411 offering.

Cloud computing has become a big topic in the IT industry. Bolstered by inexpensive, available platforms, tools and support, more and more business are seeing the advantages and moving applications to "cloud” environments. As this transformation takes place, how does it change the way QA / Testing professionals approach verifying and validating that applications meet functional and non-functional requirements? What should QA be looking for in terms of performance, integration and security? What kinds and amount of testing will vendors be looking for before they accept an application into their environment? How much and what kind of testing will the hosting vendor perform before they allow an application to go "live”.

In this event a panel of experts from different companies focusing on cloud applications, will provide their perspectives and discuss questions and views posed by the attendees. This will be an interactive discussion – taking a deep dive into the topic and providing a forum for attendees and speakers to share insights and experiences. The intention is to raise awareness and knowledge and provide attendees an understanding of the key issues and approaches when their company considers moving applications to a cloud-based environment.

Bring your questions and/or experiences and be prepared for a great event.

Generally acknowledged best practices for software development strongly favor co-location, but with mergers, acquisitions, outsourcing, and off-shoring the co-located team is becoming an endangered species. Teams now are commonly project-based and geographically distributed. How can we work effectively with team members in different physical locations?

Learn from key open source leaders that with the help of virtual teams produce some of the highest quality, most widely used software today. Come prepared to speak your mind, share your experience, listen and learn about working in a virtual team. If you are involved anywhere in the software development lifecycle, this event is for you.

What is an Unconference?

An Unconference is the inverse of a conference, in that there’s no predetermined, pre-set schedule, agenda, or speaker lineup. Utilizing the concept of OpenSpace, this unconference is the coming together of participants, with no predetermined agenda or program, to have an open discussion and share insight in a place where experts and beginners are equal. You won't be lectured at, rather you'll leave with a better understanding of a topic and the satisfaction of being heard outside Q&A time.

The OpenSpace methodology is carefully designed to elicit maximum involvement and creativity in a constructive atmosphere. It is also highly flexible so that the content is entirely determined by you -- the participants. This is not to suggest that the conference will not have content or outcomes, for there certainly will be both. Achievement in the meeting will be totally dependent upon individual and collective responsibility to make it happen. The content is what each person shares, and the outcome is what we will all create. The event will be inventive, creative, productive and full of surprises.

Capacity: 160 attendees

Audience: From executives whom are concerned with productivity, quality and cost management to product owners, analysts, developers, designers, and testers all who are attempting to share a single thought and build upon it.

If you had just five minutes to showcase your cutting-edge products, technologies, or methodologies, what would you say? What if you were forced to present those ideas with 20 PowerPoint slides that each rotated automatically after 15 seconds?

The Software Association of Oregon is hosting a second Ignite event on March 15th.

Portland’s own Bailey’s Taproom has 20 beers from which pour an ever-rotating array of fine brews representing a wide range of styles emphasizing Oregon breweries. Our main attraction for this event is their "Beer Dashboard”, a large flat-screen monitor that displays detailed information for each beer on tap, the amount left in each keg, and who’s checked in through Foursquare as well as tweeting the arrival of a new beer on the menu.

Most software developers love beer, but rarely do both interests so easily combine into a single SAO event. Join us with developer Eric Sterling, the creator of the beer dashboard, as he delves into nuances of this project and his adventures turning restaurant software into business. Afterwards, we invite you to walk over to Bailey’s to see new cool beer technology in action and enjoy a pint yourself!

What's better than combining what Portland does best; beer and technology!
