Data-Powered Government

Join us for an evening with Chris Rieth from Socrata, who has spent his career in public service as a steadfast proponent of public sector innovation, focused on putting data to work to help governments make and share progress using evidence-based policy decisions, engage citizens in new and exciting ways, and leverage technology to improve collaboration and connect stakeholders.

HUB Happy Hour

In addition to our FutureTalk with Chris, Hopworks Urban Brewery will be providing the beer - a re-launch of Gigabit IPA! Gigabit IPA was introduced in 2010 as part of a campaign surrounding the Google Fiber initiative. Hopworks is re-launching Gigabit IPA now because Portland is one of nine metro areas being considered for Google Fiber.

This is the 8th event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Doors will open at 5:30p. The networking happy hour sponsored by Hopworks will kick off with a special announcement at 6p, and includes free beer, food and drinks provided by HUB, Bellagios and New Relic. There will also be a short TAO Dev Com BIG DATA event primer featuring Allen Grimm, Data Scientist at Cloudability and Sovolve. The presentation will begin right at 7p.

Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Chris works on Socrata’s GovStat initiative and recently served as a top advisor to Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley where he helped evolve and build on Maryland’s StateStat performance management solution. StateStat is used by the State of Maryland to manage the vast majority of its agencies, budget, and workforce. StateStat is also credited with significant achievements in outcomes, such as a 24.5 percent reduction in violent crime, and the nation’s number one rating for Maryland’s public school system.

Oregon Best funds and supports cleantech startups and we are hosting a series of small business funding seminars for SBIR/ STTR grants.
This is a Lunch + Learn event - sign up here - best $10 you'll ever spend! 12 - 1:30pm Tuesday May 24th.

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lunch-learn-small-business-funding-seminar-tickets-25210896470

We will start with a 10 min overview Oregon Best and what we do ( and explain what cleantech is) followed by a 30 min in-depth SBIR/ STTR presentation by expert Leon Wolf.
We will give you an overview of the process, understand eligibility requirements and give free support in applying for grants for appropriate companies.

Many people get confused by the word cleantech. We want to clarify and shed light on the wide range of technologies that fall under this category.

The hope is that more people will:
a.) see themselves and their tech as possibly falling under the "cleantech" umbrella
b.) contact us about their technology
c.) seek eligibility and support in applying for an SBIR/ STTR grants.

Oregon Best invests at very early "risky" stages - before the technology has been proven.
We then support startups in several ways by:
a.) Investing between $50k - $250 per startup
b.) Making Introductions / networking with key partners
c.) Funding interns to work in their company
d.) Connecting co's to an experienced CEO or Entrepreneur-In-Residence to help them navigate growth, priorities, business plans, pitches
e.) Help with manufacturing / scale up through our partnerships
f.) showcasing the company at conferences, trade shows and BESTFEST
g.) Support with Government grants SBIR/ STTR

Please register to attend! Lots of great information to learn about and resources to help tech startups.

In Oregon, the Secretary of State's office manages Voting, Elections, and the Business Registry. Among other things, that means they capture and manage data to account for every dollar in Oregon's political campaigns and every vote cast across our state.

It's no secret that data is an increasingly integral part of 21st-century government. How is Oregon adapting to an evolving technology landscape when it comes to information and technology?

At a time that seems pivotal for transparency and citizen inclusion, let's talk about the opportunities and challenges of open data on our democratic process.

Fireside chat by: Cat Nikolovski

Larry Morgan is the Citizen Engagement and Inclusion Coordinator for Oregon Secretary of State, Dennis Richardson. He is also the youngest elected official in the City of Troutdale's history and the first person of color to serve on it's City Council.

Hack Oregon's Civic Lab is made up of Oregon's brightest coders, creatives, government leaders, and community members working together to discover the invisible stories of our civic life.

We're hosting three months of curated workshops, build sessions, and guest speakers all leading toward one goal: a radically new open data portal for the City of Portland. Built by the people, for the people.

You are being watched.

Until recently, most of our personal activities were easy to keep private, and unearthing the details required at least some effort on the part of those seeking our information. Today, however, with the advent of social media and surveillance technologies, along with the movement of many aspects of our lives into the digital realm, our data has become more widely available and more public. Between emails, web searches, phone calls, CCTV cameras, social media posts, and online transactions, we can be tracked by private companies as well as our government.

But, how much of this tracking is even legal?

Cyrus Farivar’s book Habeas Data examines ten pivotal legal cases that have shaped our current rights related to privacy and also explores surveillance tools in use today. He’ll explain how those cases and tools affect our lives in 2019.

Join us for a fascinating trip through legal and privacy history and into the present day to learn how law enforcement agencies and companies can collect and use our private details, often without our knowledge.

Thanks to our sponsors Northwest Academy, KBOO, and Annie Bloom's Books!

We hope to see you there!

Schedule:

6:00 PM: Doors
6:30 PM: Presentation

Speaker bio:

Cyrus [“suh-ROOS”] is an investigative tech reporter at NBC News in San Francisco.

In addition to being a radio producer and author, Cyrus was most recently a senior tech policy reporter at Ars Technica. He was also previously the sci-tech editor and host of “Spectrum” at Deutsche Welle English, Germany’s international broadcaster, from 2010-2012.

Cyrus is the author of multiple books, including Habeas Data (2018) and The Internet of Elsewhere (2011). Praised by The New Yorker, among others, Habeas Data takes a look at legal cases that have had an outsized impact on surveillance law in America. His first book focuses on the history and effects of the Internet on different countries around the world.

In 2017, Cyrus won the Technology Reporting award with Joe Mullin from the Society of Professional Journalists, Northern California Chapter for their August 2016 story: “Stealing bitcoins with badges: How Silk Road’s dirty cops got caught.”

Cyrus has also reported for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, National Public Radio, Public Radio International, The Economist, Wired, The New York Times, Slate, and many others.

He received his B.A. in Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley and his M.S. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
