Whenever we attend an Open Space conference, the sessions on Agile Learning Games are always among the most fun and best attended. This will be a self-organized play party hosted by Chris Sims of the Technical Management Institute and Elisabeth Hendrickson of Quality Tree Software. There will be refreshments, and plenty of room to spread out and play.

Agenda

At 6 pm, Willem Larsen will demonstrate "Where are your keys?" a revolutionary language learning game.

At 7 pm, we'll all share--and play--our favorite Agile learning games. This evening is a preview and warm-up event for our daylong workshop, "Creating Agile Learning Games for Coaches & Consultants," to be held on Friday, May 1 at the Kennedy School.

The goal is to come together and make a video game, or non-digital game like a board game or card game. Participants rapidly prototype game designs and hopefully inject new ideas to help grow the game industry. We share a common theme and constraints. We ask participants to create a game from beginning to end in a prescribed time (maximum of 48 hours). The brief time span is meant to help encourage creative thinking to result in small but innovative and experimental games.

What happens when digital worlds exit the screen and walk into real-world social spaces? Join us to see two inspiring interactivity hacks, the V Motion Project and LightTroupe, that break open our experience of digital life.

What: Digital interactive collaborations that merge light, motion and music.

When: Thursday, September 6th 2012, 8pm

Where: BoomBap, 640 SE Stark, Portland OR

The V Motion Project is a Kinect hack that tracks a performer's motion to create live music and a visual spectacle, what Laughing Squid calls a "gestural music-video performance system.” Developer Jeff Nusz from New Zealand will knowledge share about the collaboration of choreographers, musicians, cinematographers and coders who turned movement into music.

https://vimeo.com/45417241

LightTroupe, a Portland-based group, creates new art forms through live, interactive digital projections. Their current project is a game-driven music world that affects environmental lighting and creates visually stunning particles in a physical environment. Utilizing a game controller, players navigate and deflect piano created particles to bring chaos into a balanced field of visual stasis.

How can we create community based game development for social good?

Hosted by the 4th Annual Emergent Learning Commons conference.

Presenters:
Valerie Egan of Donate Life Northwest
Brandon Bozzi of Game It Forward
Local game developers Corvus Elrod, David Galiel and Wolfgang Wozniak

Hackathons and game jams often suffer from top-down approaches led by technology rather than the needs of users and clients. We flip this by inviting NPOs and NGOs to share their missions, goals and challenges; and, one of our case studies comes from Donate Life Northwest, an organ donation non-profit seeking to update their video game Scalpel Pal.

Our panel explores ways to approach the challenges of these NPOs and NGOs through game-based design perspectives. Following the conference, we will be hosting a startup game jam, Guts for Glory, to develop games for Donate Life Northwest.

Accelerator resident Comic Rocket would like to invite you to an evening of game play and conversation on Wednesday, January 16 from 6:30--9:30pm in the Mt. Hood Room. We had a great time doing this last month, so let's do it again!

We're bringing our game libraries, including Risk, Blokus, Magic: The Gathering, Ricochet Robots, Order of the Stick, and many more games. Please bring anything you want to play too!
Game play starts at 6:30 so everyone has time to get dinner beforehand. We'll provide snacks and drinks; you can bring some to share too if you really want to.

Bring friends, and we look forward to seeing you on the 16th!

COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones.

About TechTalks:

COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the Copious office. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to our engineering team.

About this talk:

Speaker: Andrew Havens, Senior Software Engineer

Have you ever wished you could re-live the fun you had as a kid playing arcade games? Have you ever wanted to learn 2D game programming with Ruby? Now is the time! The hardware is cheap. The libraries are easy to learn. This talk will cover some basic game programming techniques using Ruby, address some challenges you may run into, and cover the hardware and software you need in order to build and run your own Ruby-powered arcade machine.

All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to dann@copio.us along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover.

When we think of games - video games, board games, any kind of games - they are often trivialized as mere childish pastimes to entertain us. Yet games are and have always been so much more than that. From the Olympics to epic man-vs-machine chess matches to daily “games” in which an underdog rises above and beats the system, games are powerful artifacts of our everyday lives with a potential for creative expressivity and change beyond that for which we give them credit. In this talk, game designer and artist Brenda Romero talks about the expressive power of games and her current work in the award-winning Mechanic is the Message series.

Following the talk, Portland Indie Game Squad will introduce the exciting work happening in Portland and lead a discussion for generating ideas and making connections in the local game development community.

Brenda Romero is an award-winning game designer, artist, writer and creative director who entered the video game industry in 1981 at the age of 15. She is the longest continuously serving woman in the video game industry. Brenda worked with a variety of digital game companies as a game designer or creative director, including Atari, Sir-tech Software, Electronic Arts and numerous companies in the social and mobile space. She is presently the game designer in residence at the University of California at Santa Cruz and the co-founder and chief operating officer of Loot Drop, a social and mobile game company. In recent years, Brenda has become known for an award-winning series of non-digital games titled The Mechanic is the Message. So far, Train, Siochan Leat, the New World and Pre-Conception have been released. In 2009, her game Train won the coveted Vanguard Award at IndieCade for "pushing the boundaries of game design and showing us what games can do."

Please bring a computer with Unity and/or an image editing program to jam with us! Artists and Coders and folks still learning are all welcome!

We’ve put together a fantastic evening. You’ll enjoy fascinating presentations on surgical, educational and manufacturing applications for VR & AR, and learn how one Oregon studio creates the training simulations that help our Navy prepare for missile attacks. This mental feast will be followed by a gourmet dinner from renowned Chef John Gorham and exciting conversation games designed by Rose City Games. You should leave full of new information, good food, and hopefully brimming with exciting ideas for how virtual and mixed reality can apply to your life and work.

We hope you’ll join Oregon’s video game developers, elected officials, journalists and leadership from the industries outlined above as we learn why Oregon is uniquely positioned to become one of the best gamification, VR and AR development markets in the world.

Game On is the Oregon Game Organization (OGO)'s annual celebration of games and new technology. This year, OGO and TAO have teamed up to bring you several presentations on Oregon games, where games are meeting enterprise, and a wide array interactive gaming stations and demos showcasing regional companies and their work.

Our evening will begin with demos, drinks & hors d’oeuvres, followed by several local companies sharing their current work and what is on the horizon for gaming. We will wrap up the evening by sharing additional hand-picked demos to educate and entertain all attendees of Game On.

The world of gaming is evolving rapidly. Games are a strong and ongoing contributor to job creation and the state’s economy, and the rapidly expanding AR & VR markets offer opportunities for us to use gaming skill sets to solve real world problems. Join business and creative leaders, policy makers and educators on the evening of March 9th to see what where we’ve been and what’s coming next.

Join us at Uptown Billiard Club on Thursday evening (April 27th) for our first Founder Pool Tournament! Aside from the usual networking with other fellow entrepreneurs and friends, there’s a twist! We’ll be having a Founder Pool Tournament with a prize; that would help you as a startup founder or anyone trying to launch a company.

Rules
We’ll have head to head matches; bracket style (similar to March Madness). Winner of the first Founder Pool Tournament will get a free space at NedSpace for a team of up to 3 people (3 hot desk memberships) for a month at NedSpace in downtown Portland. Host Heber Michaels sets all rules, and when a ruling is needed, he alone is the decider.

Who should attend?
The event is open to all young entrepreneurs (remember, young is subjective). If you took the time to read through all of this, then YOU should attend!

Why attend?
Come to build a collaborative network, open doors to new business opportunities, and be in a close community of young entrepreneurs; the current and future makers and shakers of the world. Do you have your own startup or company? Are you a designer, developer, in marketing, student or an aspiring entrepreneur looking to start your own company? Come connect with other young entrepreneurs! You never know who you will meet, what new ideas and collaboration can come from it.

This is a private event (21 and older) with the max capacity of 24 sharp entrepreneurs. Ticket price is $7 so please RSVP. All NedSpace related events have a Code of Conduct which all participants, members, partners, visitors, vendors, guests must abide by. http://nedspace.com/img/NedSpaceCodeofConductv1.4.pdf

Join us for a happy hour, and play "Strategic Privacy by Design: The Game"!

Based on the book by the same name, this card game allows players to attempt to design a new service with privacy in mind. Use tactic cards to protect information and prevent violations, and ultimately, avoid the consequences on your product when it is released. Play cooperatively (and try to earn 'not consequences' for the team) or competitively (and try to earn less consequences than other players).

The game was developed by R. Jason Cronk, author of "Strategic Privacy by Design". He spoke to our group about privacy by design (PbD) back in May of 2017 and is back in town for another visit. Come out for an evening of fun with other privacy-minded people, and test your skills at designing with privacy in mind!

Speaker bio:

With more than fifteen years of experience in the Information Technology industry and as a licensed attorney in Florida, Robert Jason Cronk is a creative and analytical thinker, able to traverse the realms of business, law, and technology. In 2004, while working in the information security department of Verizon, Mr. Cronk decided to make his long standing personal interest in information privacy a career choice. In 2006, he entered Florida State University School of Law where he focused his research on privacy law issues, including authoring a white paper on the intersection of privacy and public records for the Florida First Amendment Foundation. After graduating, with honors, he earned his CIPP/US, was admitted to practice in Florida and has become an active member of the privacy professionals community through his involvement in the International Association of Privacy Professionals. He has since been awarded the Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT), Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) and Fellow of Information Privacy designations by the IAPP. In October of 2018, he released his first book, "Strategic Privacy by Design" and has developed a corresponding game.

Mr. Cronk currently writes, blogs and speaks on topics such as privacy and data security law, privacy by design, privacy engineering, privacy enhancing technologies (PETs), digital currencies, and privacy in public records. His twitter handle is @privacymaverick and his blog can be found at http://www.privacymaverick.com.

It's Croquet – only American Style! With bowling balls and sledgehammers!

That's right, no tiny croquet for us and we've now been doing this for 26 years.

So pull on your British Lawn Whites, your Ham Sammmich costume, your Spock ears or perhaps just your sunglasses and get ready to smack some balls.

What to bring?

something cold to drink

a chair to set a spell

a snack to share with the Mad Hatter Picnic

If you have one, a sledgehammer is handy, but we come equipped with enough hammers and bowling balls so no worries. In fact, you can just come and watch if you'd like.

We do suggest you can turbo-up your fun by dressing appropriately, or appropriately inappropriate. Need some suggestions? Check out past photos: https://mondocroquet.com/photos/

It's FREE and family friendly. See you there.
