Featuring Live Music by Rose City Swing and Dance Lessons by Stumptown Dance

It’s time to dust off those dancing shoes and come spend an evening with the Ockley Green PTO, Rose City Swing and Stumptown Dance. Ockley Green Arts and Technology school is hosting our third annual silent auction and this year we’ve added dinner and dancing to help support art and technology related projects for our students.

This year our goal is to raise enough money to complete the purchase of a classroom set of iPads. In order to accomplish this goal, we need to raise $7,000.00. To do this, we need your help!

Join us for an evening of fun, friends, food, music and dancing - all supporting arts and technology education at Ockley Green Arts & Technology School.

On May 4th, the Nanites will be hosting a TECH Talk event at the Intel campus in Hillsboro. Free and open to all who register, the event will be a student-driven technology conference: students will learn from professionals and present to each other. It will be an amazing opportunity for the young STEM community to see the amazing work their colleagues do, and to show of their own work to others. For any young people interested in technology who have done research in this field, we would love to have you come speak! If your work isn’t yet presentable, or your just beginning to cultivate your interest, please come to the conference to see and learn from your colleagues. See the RVSP page for additional instructions.

The Northwest Regional Women in Computing (NWrWIC) Celebration focuses on empowering and encouraging women to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, particularly computer science. The conference brings together students from universities and high schools, with industry leaders from the private and public sectors to engage and inspire the next generation of leaders to play an active role in shaping the future of computing and technology.

The 2013 conference, to be held in October, is the second annual event. Our mission is to encourage women to pursue and build successful careers in computing and technology by improving their educational experience and engagement with industry leaders. With less than 30% of STEM jobs filled by women, the industry is lacking full representation of the world’s views. This lack of diversity inhibits industry’s innovation potential. Our effort recognizes and empowers women who are part of the computing industry and celebrates all who are supporters of them.

If you are the following, then you would want to come:
College professionals,
industry leaders,
Job seekers,
STEM/Technology leaders,
Thought leaders,
Professors,
Teachers,
High School STEM students(must be accompanied by guardian)

Register for an early bird special:

In this workshop, attendees will experience our Intentional Method of introducing children (ages 10+) to programming (in java) using recipes . We use Agile techniques such as pair programming, randoris, short iterations, re-factoring & test-driven development in teaching. Pair instructors model Agile practices while teaching. Learn how to teach technical processes using Agile techniques. Although we’ve mostly used our method with children, we have also successfully taught adults using similar methodologies.

Note: on Tue 18 March there is a version of this event for kids to try it out along with their peers and parents: http://calagator.org/events/1250465864

Note: There will be hands-on sections of this presentation. While not everyone will need a laptop, please bring one if you can, and set it up with the courseware & eclipse from our github account

About the speakers...

Llewellyn Falco learned to jump horses in the 7th grade while living in France. Back in states, while studying drafting in high school, he started fire eating, sleight of hand magic, and once rode a unicycle 6 miles. After learning to juggle torches, he joined a acrobatics group in college where he specialized on the trampoline and walking a slack rope.

The 2014 conference is the third annual event.

College professionals

industry leaders

Job seekers

STEM/Technology leaders

Thought leaders

Professors

Teachers

High School STEM students (must be accompanied by guardian)

Register for an early bird special until March 12th:

But seriously, this is an event to watch and reflect on women’s empowerment in tech by watching Girl Rising. We’ll also have an educational (and fun, we promise!) hands-on activity and create your very own circuit.

If you’re a ChickTech: High School participant, we’ll do our best to provide transportation to the event, free of charge.

Who’s hosting?
Intel WIN (Women in Intel Network) Oregon will be co-hosting this event with ChickTech. Intel is graciously hosting the event, and ChickTech is working hard to plan and run the event.

Public Transportation
HF3 is a 7 minute walk from the Hawthorn Farm MAX Station on the blue line and 4 minutes from the nearest bus stops on Cornell Rd on route 48.

The 2015 conference is the fourth annual event.

College professionals
industry leaders
Job seekers
STEM/Technology leaders
Thought leaders
Professors
Teachers
High School STEM students (must be accompanied by guardian)

It’s summer!

Summer is for kids!

Summer is also for ice cream!

So July’s Tech Tuesday is about kids and ice cream!

Okay. It’s about kids - but we’ll have ice cream.

This month we’re bringing in three local organizations who are working with kids and teens to help them build the skills necessary for careers in technology. Leaders from ChickTech, iUrban Teen, and Girls Inc. will be talking with us about who they are, what they’re doing, and how you can get involved in their efforts.

These folks are doing really awesome things for youth and we’re excited to have them in the eBay house.

As Whitney Houston crooned, “Children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.” So come, listen, and learn about what you can do to help shape the bright young minds that are the future of tech - and really, the future in general.

See you July 28th!

Details:

Doors open at 5:45pm, presentations start at 6:30pm.

Pizza, sodas, and ice cream (and a non-dairy option) will be available.

Come to ChickTech’s Scrum Workshop to get a refresher or an introduction to the world of Scrum. For two Wednesday evenings in a row, you will go through the core aspects of the Scrum Framework. This includes why Scrum works, the key players on each Scrum team, and how product development occurs within Scrum.

Registration for this event includes both workshop sessions. You can register for the event via Eventbrite.

Scrum is an agile way to manage a project, usually software development. Agile software development with Scrum is often perceived as a methodology; but rather than viewing Scrum as methodology, think of it as a framework for managing a process. -Mountain Goat Software

The Instructor: Austin Richter, Scrum Master
Austin, a Certified Scrum Master, has been working within the Scrum Framework for two years. Before that he worked as Project Coordinator on a team that was transitioning from a Waterfall approach to Scrum.

Session 1, September 30th: Introduction to Scrum and Building a Backlog
The first session will offer an overview/refresher of the Scrum Framework. In this workshop we will explore the differences betwen a Waterfall approach and the Scrum Framework. This will highlight the importance of feedback to a team. We will demonstrate these concepts by constructing a bridge and building backlogs. During the building a backlog activity we will explore the three roles on the Scrum Team.

Session 2, October 7th: Sprint Simulation
In this workshop you will build something for a customer using the Scrum process. Through this exercise you will go through each step of the Scrum process and produce the necessary artifacts to be successful in a given Sprint. From building a task board to demonstrating your product to the stakeholders, you will be immersed into the scrum process during the Sprint Simulation.

By the end of this workshop series you'll have a comprehensive understanding of Scrum.

Part of ChickTech’s mission is to retain women in technology. We intend for this event to build community and add skills to resumes. We encourage anyone who wants to practice the Scrum workflow to register for this event!

Dates: September 30th and October 7th

Time: Doors open at 5:30pm and close around 8:30pm. The sessions will run 6-8pm

Collective Eye Films and the Hollywood Theatre present the film Big Dream, a film that promotes women and girls to pursue their dreams in the Math, Science, Engineering, and Technology fields.

Big Dream follows the intimate stories of seven young women who are breaking barriers and overcoming personal challenges to follow their passion in science, math, computing & engineering (STEM) fields. Through video diaries and verité moments, each of these girls defy the stereotype of what it means to be an over achieving woman in the fields of technology. From small town Iowa to the busy streets of the Middle East, Big Dream immerses viewers in a world designed by the next generation of girls. Watch the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/145552629

Join the filmmaker and industry professionals from ChickTech and PDXWIT after the event for a conversation about taking initiative to build girls' confidence in their capabilities and the importance of gender diversity in STEM fields.

The 2017 conference will focus on Internet Security in Our Evolving World.

College professionals,
Industry leaders,
Tech job seekers,
STEM/Technology leaders,
Thought leaders,
Professors,

Dr. Alisha Moreland-Capuia - Asst. Professor School of Medicine & Executive Director Avel Gordly Center of Healing @ OHSU
