DESCRIPTION:Join us for another exciting session of Portland's longest-ru
nning robotics meetup! This month\, we're thrilled to welcome Dr. Joe Co
le\, an honored member of our community\, who will be presenting on Teac
hing Physical AI with the PARTS Common Platform.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbstract
&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAt Rose City Robotics\, we use hands-on robotics to brid
ge the gap between abstract AI and real-world autonomy. In our Engineer
Boldly: AI Robotics Sprint\, students learn physical AI by building and
programming mobile robots that perceive\, map\, and act in the physical
world using modern tools such as ROS 2\, LiDAR-based SLAM\, and deep-lea
rning-based perception.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis talk describes how we use th
e PARTS Common Platform robot as a shared\, open foundation for teaching
embodied intelligence. Students train and deploy object-detection model
s\, experiment with imitation and reinforcement learning\, and confront
the real challenges of noisy sensors\, imperfect models\, and hardware c
onstraints. By learning AI directly on physical robots\, participants de
velop an intuition for autonomy that cannot be gained from simulation al
one.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nI’ll share lessons learned\, example student project
s\, and why accessible\, community-designed platforms like the Common Pl
atform are essential for educating the next generation of roboticists.&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nWho Should Attend&#13\;\nThis presentation is designed for
robotics enthusiasts of all levels. Whether you're a professional engin
 eer\, a hobbyist\, a student\, or simply curious about the intersection
of AI and robotics\, you'll find valuable insights in this talk.&#13\;\n
&#13\;\nAbout the Speaker&#13\;\nDr. Joseph (Joe) Cole is a distinguishe
d figure in the Portland robotics community and an honored member of P.A
.R.T.S. With a Ph.D. in Applied Physics\, Joe brings over 20 years of ex
perience developing computer vision and machine learning algorithms.&#13
\;\n&#13\;\nAs the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Rose City
Robotics\, Joe is currently focused on building robots for many tasks. H
is extensive background includes work at Northrop Grumman\, Applied Mate
rials\, and YorLabs\, specializing in image processing and applied physi
cs.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJoe has been a valued contributor to the Portland Are
a Robotics Society\, regularly sharing his expertise through presentatio
ns and helping to bridge the gap between professional robotics developme
 nt and our local community.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout P.A.R.T.S.&#13\;\nThe P
ortland Area RoboTics Society (P.A.R.T.S.) is THE longest-running roboti
cs meetup in Portland. We are an Oregon non-profit formed to help those
interested in learning about and building robots. Our monthly meetings a
re open to the public and welcome everyone from professionals to amateur
s\, students to professors\, engineers to artists.&#13\;\nP.A.R.T.S. mem
bers explore all aspects of robotics and work toward expanding communica
tion between robot enthusiasts. We share ideas\, experience\, and enthus
iasm for building robots in an informal and supportive environment.&#13\
 ;\n&#13\;\nWhat to Bring&#13\;\n&#13\;\nYour curiosity and questions&#13
\;\nA robot (working or not) if you'd like to share or get help&#13\;\nA
notebook or laptop for capturing ideas&#13\;\nAfter the Presentation&#1
3\;\nAs always\, there will be time for Q&amp\;A and informal discussion
s after the presentation. This is your chance to connect with other robo
tics enthusiasts\, share your projects\, and get feedback from the commu
 nity.\n\nTags: portland\, robot\, robotics\n\nImported from: http://cala
