DESCRIPTION:Title: Drucker-Prager Elastoplasticity for Sand Animation&#13
 \;\nSpeaker: Joseph Teran\, UCLA&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbstract:&#13\;\nWe simu
late sand dynamics using an elastoplastic\, continuum assumption. We dem
onstrate that the Drucker-Prager plastic flow model combined with a Henc
ky-strain-based hyperelasticity accurately recreates a wide range of vis
ual sand phenomena with moderate computational expense. We use the Mater
ial Point Method (MPM) to discretize the governing equations for its nat
ural treatment of contact\, topological change and history dependent con
stitutive relations. The Drucker-Prager model naturally represents the f
rictional relation between shear and normal stresses through a yield str
ess criterion. We develop a stress projection algorithm used for enforci
ng this condition with a non-associative flow rule that works naturally
with both implicit and explicit time integration. We demonstrate the eff
icacy of our approach on examples undergoing large deformation\, collisi
ons and topological changes necessary for producing modern visual effect
s.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBio:&#13\;\nJoseph Teran is a professor of applied mat
hematics at UCLA. His research is focused on numerical methods for parti
al differential equations arising in classical physics. This includes co
 mputational solids\, computational fluids\, multi-material interactions\
, fracture dynamics and computational biomechanics. Exciting application
s include computer graphics and movie special effects at Walt Disney Ani
mation. Professor Teran was a recipient of a 2011 Presidential Early Car
eer Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and a 2010 Young Investi
gator award from the Office of Naval Research. In 2008\, Discover Magazi
ne named him one of the 50 “Best Brains in Science” which lauded him and
other young scientists as “young visionaries who are transforming the w
ay we understand the world”.\n\nImported from: http://calagator.org/even
