DESCRIPTION:The DAMA Portland Chapter is dedicated to delivering thought
provoking data-centric presentations that will make you more successful
in your job.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMore enterprises are importing data from ext
ernal sources (which they cannot control)\, and integrating that data ei
ther into their operational systems or into their data warehouse. Data f
rom external (uncontrolled) sources can be problematic because (1) their
logical data architecture can be different\, and (2) they can morph the
ir architecture\, scope\, or definitions of the data which you receive w
ithout telling you. Hence\, the need for a rigorous declaration of expe
ctations in the agreement to establish that data flow and business relat
ionship.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis presentation will focus upon data import\,
and semantic data integration.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMr. Scofield has spoken on
these topics for over 14 years\, and will use numerous (painful) exampl
es.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n About the Presenter &#13\;\nMichael Scofield is an A
ssistant Professor in Health Information Management at Loma Linda Univer
sity in the Department of Health Information Management. He was a 2007 n
ominee for the DAMA Intl. Award for Professional Achievement. He is a fr
equent speaker to a variety of professional and general audiences on top
ics of data management\, data quality\, data warehouse design\, and data
visualization. His career has included education and private industry i
n the areas of data quality\, decision-support systems\, data warehousin
g\, and data management. His articles appear in DM Review\, the B-Eye Ne
wsletter\, InformationWeek magazine\, the IBI Systems Journal\, and othe
r professional journals. He also has humor published in the L.A. Times a
