 0th Avenue\, Portland (Left Entrance)&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhen: Tuesday\, Jan
uary 21st\, 2014 at 7pm&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhy: The pursuit of technology fr
eedom&#13\;\n&#13\;\nYou read that right: Speaking in public is easy and
there is nothing stopping you from giving the next informative and comp
elling PLUG talk.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n* You are guaranteed to have a unique t
opic\, experience and perspective&#13\;\n* Audiences are far kinder than
you expect (only pros get boo'd!)&#13\;\n* Visuals are always optional&
#13\;\n* No one was born a public speaker&#13\;\n* There are great resou
rces out there to help you&#13\;\n* Most things that go wrong have nothi
ng to do with you (Tsunamis!)&#13\;\n* Live demos are... risky\, but coo
l&#13\;\n* The OSCON and LFNW CFP's close shortly (hint hint)&#13\;\n&#1
3\;\nBrian and Michael will give you a pragmatic tour of exactly what is
involved in open source conference speaking and explain precisely how n
othing is stopping you from getting involved thanks to local organizatio
 ns like the Portland Linux/Unix Group.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBrian says:&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nIn 2007 I made the switch from being a machinist to a real esta
te agent\, shortly thereafter I was invited to investigate a Toastmaster
s club\, in order to become a better communicator. Through 5 years and o
ver 40 speeches in Toastmasters I reached the highest level of Distingui
shed Toastmaster. Simply stepping out of my comfort zone has given me th
e opportunity introduce dignitaries\, and MC fund-raising events for wor
thwhile causes (notably a record breaking Clark County Republican Party
Lincoln Day Dinner auction). Currently I am a recognized top 2% leader i
n AdvoCare International\, helping others achieve their physical and fin
ancial goals.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nI enjoy using Linux on a personal level for
the freedom that it represents.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&quot\;You never get rid
of public speaking butterflies\, you just get them to fly in formation:
  ~Marv Serhan&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMichael says:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nNever
in a 1\,000 years will I speak in public yet I find myself doing it seve
ral times a month in Portland and at conferences around the world. I gua
rantee I'm no Brian Rohan but I fill rooms and get applause. The secret
is finding the right room and just doing it. I will talk about the absol
ute worst that can happen (rarely what you think it would be)\, the open
source conference community and how to get from submitting a proposal t
o stepping down from the stage.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMany will head to
the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne after the meeting.\n\nTags: beer\, linux\, n
