Who is responsible? What�lessons are�to b e \;\nlearned? What do we make of the financial�bailout?�Must it \ ;\nbe�"\;socialize loss and privatize gain?"\; How can we�aid Ma in \;\nStreet instead of Wall Street? Which�initiatives should we \;\noppose and which should we support?�Free market ideologues \;\nco ntinue�to shamelessly spread�their false�interpretations and \;\nfals e solutions�--�non-intervention in management of�banks we \;\nbailout \,�re-privatization�ASAP\,�more de-regulation\, more \;\noutsourcing\ , and more�"\;free-trade."\;�But even the�mainstream \;\nmedi a�now asks if this is the end of free market \;\ncapitalism.�How�can we seize the opportunity presented by�the \;\ngreatest economic crisi s since the Great Depression� and \;\nreplace the failed�economics of competition and greed \;\nwith�a�new�economics of equitable cooperat ion? \;\n� \;\nClarity of analysis and effective action begin�with �focused \;\npublic conversation. \;\n \;\nThe event starts at 6 PM\, but please arrive earlier if you want \;\nto assure yourself a table.� \;\n \;\n \;\nROBIN HAHNEL�has just returned from Dubl in\, Ireland\, where he \;\nargued for alternatives to free-market ca pitalism before the \;\nUniversity Philosophical Society at Trinity C ollege\, University \;\nof Dublin. Earlier this fall\, Hahnel spoke a t the "\;Local \;\nAlternatives to Confront the Crisis of Capital ism"\; conference \;\nin Lara\, Venezuela. In the last month\, he has discussed the \;\nfinancial crisis on many media outlets\, inclu ding Al Jazeera\, \;\nand RT� (Irish public radio)\, as well as local ly on the KPOJ \;\nMorning Show. Hahnel is author of�Panic Rules\, wh ich analyzes \;\ncrises brought on by financial liberalization in the era of \;\nglobalization. Other books include�Economic Justice and&# 13\;\nDemocracy\,�The ABC's of Political Economy\,�and�The Political \;\nEconomy of Participatory Economics(co-authored with Michael \;\nA lbert). Hahnel is Professor Emeritus of Economics�at American \;\nUni versity in Washington DC and Visiting Professor at Portland \;\nState University. \;\n \;\nKRISTEN SHEERAN�argues that\, far from being ideologically \;\nneutral\, mainstream economics has become a barrie r to thinking \;\nabout how to promote�an equitable and sustainable&# 13\;\neconomy.�Sheeran is co-author of a forthcoming book\,�Saving \; \nKyoto (with Graciela Chichilnisky)\, about solutions to the \;\ncli mate crisis written for a mainstream audience.She \;\nis�a�cutting-ed ge thinker about economics and the environment \;\nand�widely publish ed in academic journals. Sheeran is the \;\nexecutive director of Eco nomics for Equity and the Environment \;\nat EcoTrust�and Associate P rofessor of Economics at St. Mary's \;\nCollege\, University of Maryl and. \;\n \;\nJULES BOYKOFF�doesn't shy from addressing economics in his \;\npoetry\, as evidenced by the title of his first book of 3\;\npoetry\,�Once Upon a Neoliberal Rocket Badge.�His second book of 3\;\npoetry\,Hegemonic Love Potion\, is forthcoming in 2009 from \;\n Factory School. Also a political scientist\, Boykoff is the \;\nautho r of�Beyond Bullets: The Suppression of Dissent in the \;\nUnited Sta tes\, The Suppression of Dissent: How the State and \;\nMass Media Sq uelch USAmerican Social Movements\, and�Landscapes \;\nof Dissent: Gu errilla Poetry &\; Public Space�(co-authored with \;\nKaia Sand).
